The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

The power and passion of the human voice. Thank you Lord for blessing me with the ears to hear, the mind to process and the heart to love this singing.

Just discovered Jan Peerce less than 24 hours ago, and now binge-listening. Wash your ears out with this when you are fed up with drum machines and thudding bass and autotune...you'll think you died and went to heaven.

Very good but listen to Mario Lanza's version.

Peerce is 57 years old here and as usual resonant and very polished as a top rate musician . RIP.--- 1904-1884

Peerce was the first operatic tenor I heard, on one of the Firestone Christmas albums nearly 60 years ago. His voice wasn't particularly large. But at his best, it was very well-focused, clear and ringing --

Oh my goodness, I can't believe you uploaded this! Jan's "Serenade" from "The Student Prince". I've been waiting decades to see this performance, and my grandfather and I are going to love watching it together! I can't thank you enough! I apologize for being critical of the uploaders during these last months; you really do care, and I love this channel! Jan Peerce is one of the greatest singers of all time, in my opinion, and this is so beautiful! I hope you also may upload James Melton doing "Beyond the Sea" someday as my grandfather loves Melton so much that he named his son after him, and he bought the original record back in 1951 (the same year that Melton performed it on the show) although he didn't get to see the performance as he didn't have a TV back then. Thanks again so much!

A cousin of mine that I never met (also related to Richard Tucker), Jan Peerce's voice is incredible...especially considering that he was something like 5" 2" tall. Must have consisted of 50% lung! Look up his performance of Kol Nidre on RU-vid, and then compare to, say, Johnny Mathis', Danny Thomas', Perry Como's, Neil Diamond's performances of the same hymn...and you will really get an idea of the dynamic power of Peerce's voice.

@@olensoifer9901 I agree completely! He had a very powerful voice. I hope they post more of his appearances on the Sullivan show!

Not crazy about the backing choir, but it's great that something like this turned up even though I believe it was pre-recorded and he was lipsycing (see 2:05 ). It gives me hope that one of the recorded performances of the Manzoni Requiem with Peerce will eventually turn up!

@@VinylToVideo It seems live to me. His voice seems to get a bit louder as he moves down the stage presumably closer to the boom mic. The choir sounds live too. I believe he was about to start singing the second chorus a little too early, but corrected himself just before he started. Have to disagree about the choir too. I think that versions of "Serenade" with a backing choir, as here, are generally more powerful than ones without as it really adds atmosphere. I don't think any operatic singers lip-synced on the Sullivan show, only a few of the pop and rock acts. I do hope eventually they will post Jan's many other performances on the Sullivan show, especially of pop songs and tenor standards such as "Song of Songs", "Because" and "You'll Never Walk Alone".

@@TomElvisSmith I questioned the whole time whether it was lip synced or not; something about it feels "off" to me, especially as someone trained in bel canto singing it just doesn't look natural. 2:05 sort of confirmed it where he was preparing to open his mouth for "Overhead" early. I also felt like I heard the recording before. Maybe his playing it safe on TV and not taking the high note at the end indicates it as a live performance though. I see now they also recently posted him singing the aria from "Carmen." Something like that I would think they'd be more likely to lip sync, however it appears to me to be live. It's possible the audio and video here is a fraction of a second out of sync I suppose also.

A musically sound performance, but vocally boring, & never subtle enough - just vocally invariant, throughout, as is ever the case with Peerce.
