This is something every Jan Peerce fan-and every ardent fan of great singing and great singers will want to hear. This is the great American tenor Jan Peerce, in California in 1977, running scales, all the way up to D natural and joking about trying for an Eb (I about fell out of my chair:-). All followed by bits and pieces of many, many of his favorite arias and songs. This is an absolutely unique tape. There are no others, on RU-vid or anywhere else. This was made by my friend Steve at Shicoff 1, who was a good friend of both Jan Peerce and Richard Tucker. Steve made this tape himself, on a cassette recorder, 37 years ago. This is an absolute personal treasure of Steve's, and it is a very generous gesture on his part to permit me to put this on RU-vid, where many, many people can share some private, personal moments with one of America's greatest musical talents. This is historical treasure! Thank you STEVE!

A very important document that not only attests to Peerce's vocal longevity but to his unfailing interpretative ability and versatility. He approach to music was without gimmicks and his musicianship impeccable. I had the good fortune to have heard him at the Met several times during seasons 1960-61 and 1965-66, the last time being a Don Ottavio that was an object-lesson in fine singing. Thanks to you two admirers of vocal art.

A lot of flexibility in Peerce's voice at a very tender age.

The last time I heard Peerce was in the early 70's when L.Price cancelled a Lincoln Center recital and Peerce came up from his Florida "retirement" and sang a complete program of the best known Verdi,Puccini, etc. arias. He sang amazingly well and greatly enjoyed the interaction with the audience.

Jan Peerce lived in New Rochelle until he died in 1984 at age 80, but he did sing in Florida and often visited his son Larry Peerce (a well known Film Producer in Los Angeles.) This is part of the rehearsal I taped at his Beverly Hills hotel , and with his knowledge, as we where friends. I was also a guest at his home where he did have a mechanical "Blue Bird" like the song he was famous for!

This is a dream to listen to. It makes me deeply happy. This is humanity at its best and the singing art as a complete natural expression. Peerce was a giant in the singing world. To hear him sing Bluebird of Happiness and You´ll never walk alone with such dignity is very moving indeed. And his inspiring vocalizing. This is one of the most important uploads I have experienced on You Tube for a long time. Thanks Edmund and Steve!

I saw him often in New York. I was there in Carnegie Hall for his last concert. We were all amazed that his voice still worked so well.

Absolutely marvelous! I met him when he came to Australia in the mid to late 1970's to publicize his autobiography. In a department store of all places. Lovely man!

Heavens above! He must actually have been in his seventies here! Is that incredible or what? If I hadn't known, I'd have thought he was half that age in this recording. Such power, clarity, flexibility - not even many far younger tenors can reach such accomplishments. Thank you so much, Edmund and Steve, I enjoyed this immensely. Le'chayim, le'chayim!

Very true. He was in his early 70's when those rehearsal clips were made. Absolutely amazing! I remember meeting him at a party when he was about that age, and I offered him a glass of wine and he looked at me and said, " No, no, I have to sing tenor tomorrow night." This is a man who took care of himself and that unbelievable voice like one can hardly imagine. What a man!
