My tribute to '60s British model Jane Lumb. She was one of the top 5 models in Britain at that time, and graced the pages of Vogue and numerous other fashion magazines frequently. She also modeled for the 1964 and 1973 Franco Pirelli calendars.
Jane Katherine Lumb was born in Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire, England, on November 23, 1942. Her father was a mill owner named Herbert Lumb. She attended fancy boarding schools, and showed much academic prowess, even in elementary school. At 17, she completed 4 A-levels in one year was set to go to Oxford to major in English, but had to attend a tutorial college first. She ran off with a medical student after completing the one-year program, and when that relationship ended, she made her way to London, and found work as a model.
Along with modeling, Jane was an extra in the "Carry On" films, a a bit part in "Goldfinger" (1964), and played a female St. Sebastian in Ken Russell "The DeBussy Film" (1965), done for the BBC TV anthology series "Monitor." Jane was also the longtime girlfriend of Hollies' lead guitarist Tony Hicks.
In 1976, she married music manager Tony Gourvish, and had a daughter. She finally obtained that English degree she put off getting years earlier by taking the courses at the Open University, and became a public relations officer on returning to work. Jane promoted the likes of the group Showaddywaddy, the Bay City Rollers, guitarist Duane Eddy and then, in the 1980s, the Dorchester hotel. Later, she represented the restaurateur Anton Mosimann, and while approaching retirement she had worked as a receptionist in Harley Street and also marked exam papers.
Jane Lumb was prized by her friends for her irreverence, her wit, her clothes sense and her inability to bear a grudge. She prided herself on her ability to do The Times crossword. She died of breast cancer on February 8, 2008.
The song used is "Monument" and is sung by Kenny Lynch. It was originally released in 1963.
