In this new episode of What’s Underneath, made possible with the support of Dipsea, Janelle Monáe explains how her gender fluidity transcends the confines of how they dress and can be found whether they’re covered up or wearing no clothes at all.

That's why I think it's so important to not try so hard to label everything in a general way. I like meeting individuals and just listen to them. See them get to know themselves, I get to know myself, we come together and describe ourselves the way we think it fits best and respect the other persons view and expression about themselves. Just connecting individual to individual ❤

I love this. My parent was the same way. They didn’t have the language to explain themselves (so they just thought that they were a freak for 65+ years). They’re in their late 70s now, and with counseling, they are finally able to recognize that they were never a freak. It’s super hard to break out of the boxes others put us into (and even harder to break out of the ones we put ourselves into), so bravo to you, Janelle Monāe, and to my parent, for doing it. 🎉

by todays standards i am non binary, but my coming of age was in a very different time from today. One thing that is so different is that there was joy in not giving a fuc@ about what other people thought and not fitting in. difference made us unique. it was even fun at times rustling feathers of people so trapped in conformity. I saw it as a rejection of all gender norms. Rule free. Not trans in terms of body. rejection of all gender norms. Today feels so different. We are supposed to care now way more, take offense when others aren't on board and care a lot if people don't use "they". Laughing off misgendering can be liberating giving others less power over us and not even wasting our breath. Sometimes i was even pleased i passed as the opposite sex. Today 3/4 of my friends in my life would be non binary or trans had they been from this era. New language for something that always was. Gender always on a spectrum and without rules, in the queer world anyways. So i encourage the youth of today to not care too much about getting everyone in line with understanding. Free flow. Experiment. Enjoy life. Our uniqueness our individuality. conformity, boxes, rules and labels = boring. imo

masculine and feminine are not genders. They are aspect of a human that compliment each other. Wonderful artist but this the least interesting thing about her.

I watched a really interesting speech from a linguistic professor who explained how much languages can influence our way of viewing things! In English every nome and object doesn’t have a gender where in German for example „bridge“ is female. In French it‘s Male. So if you‘re fluent in both of these languages you‘re able to see both male and female characteristics in the object. This really made me interested in leaning more languages since I’m only fluent in German and semi fluent in English.

Yeah a lot of people don’t understand why, if non-binary people (and others obv) don’t like labels, we’d use a label to describe ourselves. Because if we give ourselves that label, we can make it fit us rather than trying to fit into them

This is E X A C T L Y how i feel. I've been nonbinary my whole life, i just didn't have the vocabulary for it for like 23 years. I thought i was just awful at being a woman and felt like shit about myself, but I'm actually GREAT at being nonbinary.

@loafie_bread
@loafie_bread Год назад
@@lunar3n what does “masculine energy” mean? Because it sounds to me like she simply displayed masculine traits, and that’s a factor of personality, not gender. And in what way does displaying masculine traits make you “non binary”? Last I remember, that made a girl a tomboy.
@lunar3n
@lunar3n Год назад
@@loafie_bread hate to break it to you but gender is literally made up. what you’re saying is correct because gender is just a social construct. but because it’s structurally to integral to modern western society and it’s treated as real, of course our language has to adapt and the concept of gender has to expand for those of us who aren’t on the strict black and white binary.
@lunar3n
@lunar3n Год назад
@@loafie_bread because gender is a social construct, it can mean whatever you want it to mean. personally i get what you’re saying and i don’t relate to gender anymore, just personality, but i won’t police other people on the language they use and their ideas about themselves.
@loafie_bread
@loafie_bread Год назад
@@lunar3n I’m sorry, this may come off as rude, that’s not what I intend. What do you mean gender is made up? For all of human history up to today, gender has meant the same thing as biological sex. If it was actually a social construct, then you’d be right to say that it can mean whatever you want it to mean, because it would make no sense to say otherwise. But if that’s the case, then what makes gender different from personality? The only coherent definition of gender consists of a person’s biological sex, and aside from literal genetic disorders, there is no sex that exists between male and female. There absolutely is a gender binary, and people who fall outside of average gender expression have an androgynous style and/or personality. That’s totally okay- I’m kinda like that myself! But it doesn’t make you a different gender. To say that it does is completely incoherent.
