The musician, actor, author and activist talks about her career at the 2022 BFI London Film Festival, presented in partnership with American Express (5-16 October).
Janelle Monáe has released three albums, encompassing a wide array of musical styles: The Archandroid, The Electric Lady and Dirty Computer. The latter, released in 2018, was accompanied by a similarly titled 'emotion picture', directed by Andrew Donoho and Chuck Lightning, and starring Monáe and Tessa Thompson. In 2022, she also published a book of short stories, 'The Memory Librarian', inspired by the world of her album.
Alongside her musical career, Monáe has attracted international acclaim for her screen performances, most notably Academy Award Best Picture-winner Moonlight (LFF 2015) and Hidden Figures (2016), as well as Harriet (2019), Antebellum (2020), The Glorias (2020) and this year’s closing night film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. She also starred in the second season of Amazon Prime Video's show Homecoming.
Monáe is also an outspoken activist and advocate for both LGBTQIA+ and race equality.
