Janet Jackson, Respectability Politics & Why Fierce Women Misbehave

Pop icon Janet Jackson found herself on the scorching end of a media firestorm following news that she was divorcing her billionaire husband, Wissam Al Manna, a mere 5 years after marriage and 3 months after giving birth. Is she a gold digger? Was she in it for the baby all along? Who knows... and who cares? When we study the history of the the greatest, most phenomenal women to walk the Earth, you discover that these questions of respectability failed to concern them. There is an unwritten code of ethics that women are expected to abide by-- cultural expectations of how we behave, how we love, mother, and connect to the opposite sex. These social codes and sexual mores weren't made to empower us, they were made to keep women in check! Our notion of feminity as being soft, accommodating, kind, considerate and nice holds us back. As you'll see in this video, the women who make history, the politicians, the activists, the sirens, and the stars-- all behaved 'badly'. For more power tips visit WomenLovePower.com.
Women Love Power® is a digital education company, established in 2015, that produces smart, in-depth content for women on power, mastery and sensuality. Our mission is to help ambitious women develop a rare skill-set and worldview that empowers them to live and love on their own terms.
Ayesha K. Faines is a lecturer, thought-leader and founder of Women Love Power® . Sought after for her opinions on pop culture, power and gender politics, Ayesha has been featured in a number of media outlets including MTV, Essence, Hot 97, Afropunk, and The Michael Baisden Radio Show. She is described as a master teacher-- with the rare ability to translate esoteric concepts into ideas that are captivating, inspiring and relatable. She's lectured before national organizations and academic institutions including the University of British Columbia, Indiana University, The University of New Haven, Temple University and others. She is also a featured panelist on 'The Grapevine Show’, a millennial web series. A former TV journalist, Ayesha has worked on-air for news stations in both the Jacksonville, Florida and New York City media markets. She is graduate of Yale University with a degree in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.

my grandmom (grew up in a tiny catholic village in italy) told me, when Josephine Baker was popular, she would one time sneak out of class and go to cinema to watch her dance, priests found out (cause they were there themselves...) and so she got kicked out of school and shamed, and she told me she didn't regret sneaking out, it was the moment she understood, men will put you down for the things they do themselves so she won't listen to them anymore, she was 13 back then. I loved that woman and i miss her every single day. my idol

Linda Lemoni now this is a word!!! The double standard is real and the only way to circumvent is for us to play by our own rules! Your grandma sounds fierce!
@lindalemoni5428
@lindalemoni5428 7 лет назад
she definitely was, thank you! So fierce, that she would leave her fiancé when she was pregnant, DURING WWII cause he wouldn't share his food equally, and she said she preferred being hungry in war and an unmarried mother at that time than to be with an egoist. So when I dated in the beginning of my 20ies, and I still didn't really know yet who I was, and kind of allowed some men to misbehave with me, my memory to her would always stop me from continuing that hurtful behavior to myself and stand up for myself instead :) she was the best influence I could have ever had in my life

I had to share this video because it speaks so much truth. If a woman says that she wants an attractive, educated man and so on , people will be quick to tell her : " oh you will be single for the rest of your life", but if man says he wants " an intelligent, beautiful woman by his side", very few people will tell him that he will be single forever. The double standard is real.

That's quite true, the dating books for men are quite different than ones written for women. They are encouraged, inspired and taught to follow their instincts and get what they want women's books are entire endless lists of rules and even blaming yourself for everything in some. It's time to learn to be not nice, it's hard to unlearn though.
@ekowkumasi1178
@ekowkumasi1178 5 лет назад
Introvertsan it's funny, there are many men taught to be nice, also. it's odd that there are so many videos about nice men and women finish last. odder that there is a quote that says the first shall be last. many of these circle speeches keep people in a cycle of spinning rhetoric and ideologies to keep them in line with manipulation, to both divide and keep them against one another. it is a trick of someone who is controlling both parties, it is systemic. learning the system gives clear view of what is really going on. law is law and applies the same, and power is in league with one of those laws, however, it goes under a different term, as language is what directs the narrative and mindset. the etymology and history of nice is in reference to breeding and training.

Absolutely love this video! I just took your archetype quiz to learn who I am at the core and I found out that Ms Jackson and I have major similarities. I knew there was a reason I loved her so much. Literally the GOAT 🐐. Thank you Ayesha! This is amazing.

100% agreed. Despite all Technologie advances we enjoy today, we still struggle with society acceptance and basic rights as equal human beings. We need to support each other and change this patriarchy.

Excellent video! I've been pondering over the concept of 'Performative modesty' for several weeks now and your video touched on a lot of the same points. You refer to it as 'respectability politics'

This is the best video to watch on my way out to work. I’m sitting on the A train watching this and thinking how scandalous I’ve been most of my life... & I picked this way of living again after my divorce and I get so much respect and admiration. Keep giving women these truth and telling us how much power we have. Stay blessed beautiful. You have a new subbie & I’ll be sharing these videos with my friends. ❤️

Love this video! Especially the part in the end about the gold star. I've been contemplating the attitude of "getting the gold star from society" behavior for about two days now- just thinking about how toxic it is. Confirmation from the universe that I'm thinking correctly, I guess lol.
