We would have never heard of this band without her. Obviously she is the star, And best one, in this band. She was so awesome! I feel sad I never got to see her, or Jimi.
This is so awesome. Only Jimi was ahead of this. Well just think if Jimi and Janis had been in a band together, wow. That might have been the greatest. Janis was so great. I never got to see her in concert. I did see Heart in concert 3 times. Ann has been rocking for 50 years now. Janis was only famous for 4 years, she played and sang like about 10 years.
I heard this for the first time in my apartment near campus in 1969. I almost had a heart attack. It through me into another world. She and the band were amazing. Raw. Cutting right to the heart.
They are all so fukking brilliant, Janis Joplin is jubiliant and luminous. No one ever can compare to her. Especially all the airbrushed wannabe auto tuned robots we get served up these days. Janis=Real
I was a friend Janis and she loved to hang out were I worked the Fillmore West as well as perform and if you think about the lyrics, you can hear the joy of feeling good at the Fillmore!
My Mom and her friend were going to hitchhike up to the Monterey Pop Festival In 1967 to see the bands there including Big Brother and the Holding Company and decided not to go, 27 years later her daughter (me) at 25 years old went with friends to Mountain View near San Francisco and got to see the Grateful Dead before Jerry Garcia died, it was like going through a time machine going back to the 1960’s
Jesus she was so sweet there, 24 years old but looks like a kid to me. And she's clearly bemused at the very start of the song, as though she's surprised by the crowd reaction.
Wouldn't we all? To quote the Mr Big song "green tinted sixties mind" "Hanging out with Janis, moving to Atlantis, couldn't make it if you tried. What's the point in force it's easy as a horse to ride Your green tinted sixties mind."
If we all think this was awesome, imagine what the first performance on Saturday evening must've been like! This was the 2nd performance on Sunday, because the first one had not been filmed. Though they might've been in overdrive here due to the cameras rolling.
Never seen this version before. Combination Of The Two refers to the Fillmore auditorium and the Avalon ballroom. Bill Graham moved to the Fillmore West in July '68. Previously the Fillmore West was called the Carosel.
Without Janis there would be no Debbie Harry, no Madonna. This brave soul gave the world something she knew she could never take home. We are truly blessed for her time with us 🎉
There's a good feature-length documentary titled "900 Nights" that was made on the band, featuring interviews w/ Gurley--you should check it out. It was released commercially on DVD in the 90s. He talks about his influences and guitar techniques.
Sam should’ve sang it like this every time, but this is the only version I can find where he does. And also a real treat for Gibson SG lovers: a Standard, a Special, and an EB3!
Immortal technique (not the rapper). Really takes you there. Can't imagine how good it was in person but the reaction of the Mamas and the Papas is a clue.
I actually like Sam’s role in this song... it’s fun. Not on Janis’ level but everyone seems to be having fun doing this song. Very San Francisco 1967 the year I was born!
This live ver. is actually better then the studio ver. Young Janis and her bandmates look and sound Great!! I would like to have been there, but I was about 14 yrs young then, so not bloody likely!! However, If I owned Tardis...🎵🎼🎤🎶🎹💝💨💨⁉😎👩😻
Awesome! But this isn’t “Janis Joplin”, it’s Big Brother and the Holding Company and Janis was a member. It would be like referring to Jefferson Airplane as “Grace Slick”.
@mackb909 I know this is 7 months late and you probably already know the answer, but it is a latin instrument know as a guiro (pronounced weir[as in weird]-O)
I've got a question and it's driving me nuts. Can someone, anyone, tell me the name of the percussion instrument Janis is playing? It's some kind of ridged wood block stroked with a stick. Please someone out there give me the answer! Thanks in advance.
I've wondered about this for years. What I think is the best version of "Dark Star" uses it. i'm pretty sure it was in August 1970 at the Fillmore East. At the intro somebody is playing that instrument.
Thats not James Gurley launching into his break its Same Houston Andrews the 3rd.. He was a better live guitarist than Jimmy Page. At least Big Brothers stuff didn't sound like a drunk cover band like Zeppelins did. best Bruce Peek
