In 1967 I had the pleasure to be front and center belly up to the stage for her performance at a venue called Lagoon, just north of SLC. During A Piece of My Heart, she kneeled down and put her hand on my cheek. Needless to say, at 16 years old I melted.
@@billiondollardan Yes, it was over by the old wooden rollercoaster on the north west side where all the concessions were at. My understanding is Lagoon has gone through a big renovation since then. I haven't been there since 1970.
@@bobbywilhelm6670 Oh yeah it's definitely different. I couldn't think of a spot at Lagoon where they would have a big concert like that. That is soooo cool that THE Janis Joplin put your hand on her cheek. She was too cool, man
+Sylvia Holcomb I love that you were there. For me some of the finest live music performances to ever make it onto film. But to be there must of been on another level.
Amen, sister. I don't even know how many times I've watched this video, but it'll never be enough. Just a little girl from Texas, with a voice big as the universe.
@David Ross: I came across this video quite by accident this evening; there seems so few live performances of this quality left to memorialize her. Janis Joplin was truly one of a kind.
I was thinking of her today 2021.wondering how fun must have been seeing her in woodstock.i wish I was there,to see all the artist who played that night.😁⭐🎶💡🖐️👍🤩
Janis Joplin female power unleashed. She was like a comet that flew too close to the earth and burned out before we got hear and witness more of her talent. A life gone too soon
I saw Janis 3 times. One time at the Fillmore East she did make me cry. During her performance she was projected on a screen, and watching her facial expressions when she sang was highly emotional.. She continues to be one of my all time favorite performers.
That's a true artist, unlike anything they produce these days! Can you give a little piece of your soul and make me feel what you feel, now that's singing!!!!!
Me too and same ages both then and now. As Cass Elliot said: WOW!!! It's still magical. That's REAL singing. So called singers today take note. Oh, I forgot: it's not bout talent today, it's about how much skin you can show. Sad.
This was filmed at the Monterey pop festival. I was sitting about 4 rows behind Cass Elliot. Janus and Big Brother were not well known at this time. That all changed at this performance. The head of CBS records was in the audience as well. She signed a contract with CBS a few days after the concert and the rest is history.
I love that Cass Elliot was so into it. I really respect artists who appreciate unique (to them) talent. It does them both honor. It's not a competition.
Mr. Kent you are so right, and I love & appreciate your statement. I love The Mammas & The Pappas as well as Miss Janis. I miss all of them. They left us so much cool jams to listen to. They are artist in every since of the word. Take care friend.
This performance was so over the top amazing and soulful, it is nearly unbelievable how she can put all that into her music. I bet even people watching that live knew they were witnessing a stunning singer at her prime and blessed to witness in person her superior talents. Thank God this was preserved, I can only imagine what else she did us later folks will never hear or know about.
Apparently it almost didn't get recorded. Janis performed this song on the second day of the festival which brought the audience to its feet for the first time, but was _not_ filmed. I've seen various reasons why from 'contract' disputes to personnel problems. Regardless, Joplin's performance on the second day was astounding enough that the organizers convinced the band to do another on the third (and last) day so that it could be filmed. Thank, as you say, god.
What a legendary performance. I would give anything to go back in time and be in that crowd. Some people have no idea how lucky they were to even be that close to such a legend.
I was just thinking while re-watching this for the billionth time, if I could do one thing I would go back to her concert at Winterland. Then I'd be ready to die without regret.
All the people who know what really good music is.And who was not alive then! I know you all are well and truly grateful for the magic and soul that is in all the records and styles of the time. I will never be able to put in to word's just how special people like JANIS JOPLIN,JIM MORRISON,ECT,its also sometimes when certain creative people meet up and special things happen,ie :LED ZEPLIN, THE KINKS SANTANA,JETHRO TULL,I COULD go on and on,but due to the fantastic people who got together and made real music.music you don't just listen to but physical y feel it only you people who are aware of this fantastic music. Its a shame that the system(people in power) decided that this had to be stopped!!? after Woodstock etc,i mean future DRS , politicians....etc can't be stoned on acid smoking weed.... We know what really happened to people like JANIS,who was involved with the Oakland HA... she was supposed to have died from heroin overdose etc I think??JIM MORRISON , JIMMY HENDRIX,Maybe not but it is and had to be controlled.look at the rave scene ... once again the system stopped it all . Stonehenge now that was a really good festival , until the battle of bean field If you are old enough to remember, pregnant woman and children was attacked by the police,,bad scene.sorry 'i am going on and on,but one love and play your music loud especially JAMES BROWN, HA HA HA.
Actually I think most who saw her sing live know how lucky we were to see her. Anybody who saw this performance on the big movie screen In 1968 knew she was very special. Not everyone had the chance to see her live, since she was gone two years later, but I did once, sat maybe 60 feet away, and I knew I had seen something that would burn into my memory. She flew way too close to the sun, as you can surely see.
What a monumental memory! You were so fortunate to have been there....a seminal point in music history. I was in junior high at this time and had not yet heard of her. Hope your life has been rewarding.
My mom was there too 2 rows behind Mama Cass... She told me of the whole line up.. And how she was blown away by Janus's performance you see Mama Cass's reaction everyone had about the same response...
+Ro Pi I have never been at a concert where the lighting on-stage was the same as the lighting over the audience. Not even natural light. I obviously can't prove the footage is from the same performance, but the lighting is certainly not enough to prove it isn't.
This was such a special little cut of celluloid, it actually makes you feel like you're there and like these were all real people and not characters in a book like it so often seems. So humanizing.
Oh yes! I still cry when she sings Ball and Chain. I am so grateful to have seen her in Philly and even gave her a hug as she was about to go on stage. It was obvious that she loved and was grateful to her fans. RIP Janis!
@@SP-fw1xe She imitated em? She just sung blues genre and enjoyed it, bring it to general use. But not for u huh? coz of her skin colour? As u said she did imitated- then african american imitated everything else (other genres of music, science, crafts) but not bluses. R u serious with talks like theese?
This was supposed to be an appearance by Big Brother and the Holding Company. But their singer absolutely stole the show and it has become Janice's appearance. As a 75 + guy I am still moved every time I heat her voice.
I have NEVER seen a singer put so much in to their performance.Great voice and in my opinion the best I've ever heard. She was way ahead of her time. All the best Janis coz I beleive your spirit has moved on to a higher place now.
Just because you can scream like her at a stage that doesn't mean you are a good performer tho, I mean even a child can scream and sing like that if they are brave enough to do that in front of people.
Janis reached deep into the very pit of her heart and brought it all back out for the world to see and hear. Very few people have such talent or the courage to risk the criticisms that follow such naked lack of inhibition. RIP, Baby. You were one of a kind. We were lucky to have you.😘
I was a hippy in the 60s, and my best friend, Beth, could have been Janis's dopple ganger. We were living in Texas, but had hitchhiked up to Rhode Island. To our delight, Janis was going to sing nearby. So we went to the concert. It was a small place and everyone was so stoned that we easily made our way to the front next to the stage. Janis and the Holding Company came on and started singing. My friend and I were rockin out, and started jumping up and down. Janis looked down and saw Beth and her mouth fell open. It was like looking in a mirror. That was my dear Beth's moment. Her few minutes of fame. And we had a blast. I'm 75 now, and still enjoying those great bands. Peace and love in Jesus, guys.
@@DFlacko664 Plenty of reasons least is the poor recording equipment uses in those in those days. There was excellent equipment but available for a price. Artist didn't have money to toss in a well on & hope & dream & neither did the record company. Too recording companies were being hit fast and furious because everyone wanted to be a star.
@Aaron Digby Oh you weren't presumptuous...I was listening & thinking "Janis sings outrageous blues" - then I saw your comment & added "BLUES" to it 🥰 Rock DID come from blues, so Janis has it ALL covered in here, LOL
This woman had a style that just cannot be replicated on any level. Her voice had so much energy and pain she left everyone in awe who saw her perform. Her style is indescribable..........
I don't know why they all got into dangerous drugs like heroin. Stage fright? Career anxiety? Nowadays you could give them propranylol and there would likely be no fatal overdoses.
@@snowline8935 Most of them, their drug of choice was alcohol. She was an alcoholic first. I don't get the needle thing either. Just trying to fill that empty gnawing hole within. Escaping the pain because not even fame could fill it. 😢 EDIT: I'm a recovered alkie (over 20 yrs) and who knows if the opportunity presented itself at a particulary down time, if I would have done it. Outside of pot though, I had a fear of hard drugs and hallucinogens.
Love her, or hate her. There is no in-between with Janis. I instantly fell in love with her when I first saw her in this movie when it first got released. I was fortunate enough to see her perform back in Aug '69. I remember it like it was yesterday.
PietraBourneuf I was instantly blown away! Up to that point in time, I had never seen a performer put such passion into their music, and none since. Oh gosh, there are others with that passion, like Otis Redding, but none knocked me over like Janis did.
What an honor to have seen her perform! Yeah, I bet you knew right away she was something special. What did she sing and were you close to the stage? I bet you were devasted when she died. She had that thing that no vocal coach can teach, it can't be learned. The way she belted out her pain...she felt every word and really wanted her audience to feel what she was feeling. She was one of a kind and you were there..that's amazing.
PietraBourneuf The concert facility was a large outdoor pavilion with a large performance stage. The pavilion has seats for 5700, and lawn seating (outside the pavilion on a hill) for about 13,500. My friend and I sat on the lawn, with our cooler full of beer. Lawn tickets back then went for about 3 bucks. I found out later that two of my cousins were up at the stage, standing up against it. Janis was with the Kozmic Blues Band then, and the concert was the next weekend after Woodstock. She performed stuff from their recently released album, like Try and Maybe with some others. She also did Big Brother songs. The local chapter of the Hell's Angels were there. They were all at the top of the hill, lined up against the wooden fence. I don't know about anyone else, but they scared the s**t out of me, not knowing what they would do during the concert. In the middle of the concert, Janis (who was drinking S. Comfort the whole night) takes a pause between songs and starts saying, "Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me..." over and over. She then asks, "Are there any Hell's Angels out there?" I thought, oh Lord, here it comes now, but no response from them at all. She goes on, "You're all invited to an after-concert party." Then the band immediately goes into Piece of my Heart. The place went nuts! I still miss her and her music.
Man, what I would give to have been there! It sounds like a perfect day to me! Classic Janis, inviting a bunch of strangers, (Hell's Angels at that) to party with her after the concert! Actually, she was a very smart lady, she probably invited them to party after the show so they would be less likely to cause any trouble during. Also, she may have wanted a few extra "party supplies" lol...
WOW. what else can you say about this? I've never seen Janice Joplin before today, and wow, i can see why she is so popular. Passion. . Freedom. This girl makes people wish they could have as much fun as her. To bad she passed on so quickly. We need more people like her.
@@boostablemedia696 let me give you a kick in the pants. Lol. My maiden last name is McGhee, my daddy’s name was Robert. My mom wanted to name me Bobbie. Daddy said no. Alas, Susan won out. I was born in the 50’s. I thought that was a hoot when I was told that story after Janis released me and Bobby McGee on 45’s and an album. Daddy didn’t care for Rock and roll at that point in time. Enjoy your journey with Janis. ☮️.
Janice had a voice that couldn't be matched from anyone I'm 71 years old and I still love her music today God bless her soul she's singing in heaven fire fire
Today's singers suck. There are a few exceptions but very few. Anything associated with rap is pure crap. Disgusting dreck. This also includes the garbage that was & remains Disco.
Only Amy Winehouse has come close. Janis, Nina Simone, Grace Jones, Mamma Cas, Winehouse.. am l missing anyone? Yes the singer of Portishead is quite the woman
She may be long time gone...but Janis is still very much here...and we ( The Old Ones..I´m 73 ) we must pass on and let the " Youngsters " know about " True Music and the Nerve " that goes along with it. Heart and Soul ❤
June 17th 1967. The amazingly talented 24 year old Janis Joplin took the stage and changed the world in her own way. She had been born for this evening in my opinion. Rest in Peace sweet Janis.
Awsome, even when I've been played this song for about one hundred times on my tube, still gives me goosebumps. KICK ASS SONG, SINGED FROM THE DEPTHS OF HER SOUL => IMMORTAL EPICNESS.
Moved back in with her parents, felt like a failure early in life, naturally didn’t want to keep trying. Kept fighting, kept giving her best efforts to her dreams. It worked. Not because she became famous but because she got to do what she felt she was meant to do. That’s success. Let that be a lesson to us all-please don’t stop working very hard for what you know is in your bones. Give your something your absolute best and don’t ever quit
she moved back because she hit rock bottom, was a junkie and had crap boy friend's that used her. yes she started over drug free and rocked it , but did get into drugs again and rest I history
Sadly, this one of a kind woman lost her battle to the demons she spent her life fighting much too early. Pray that she found her peace in eternity. When Joplin died the world lost a talent that was amazing.
@@chadbailey189 I done drugs too. She just thought she could shoot the same dosage after getting clean, it was to much ! I watched her autopsy show. So sad.
She had a very unique gift, a great performer, who let you see deep inside, all the passion and pain. The only other person who is even close us Tina Turner. I always wonder what would Janice had been like, had she survived. She was a giant talent, but a flame that strong can't burn long.
Her music would have become greater and greater. She was developing more control and dynamics by the time she did Pearl. Funny you mention TIna Turner. I recall seeing her on Dick Cavett. He asked her who else in music she liked. She said only one group, Ike and Tina Turner. Couldn't think of anyone else.
It’s awesome to see a phenomenal vocalist such as Cass Elliot watch & be in awe & admiration of a fellow, equally phenomenal vocalist of her time, Janis Joplin. Cass’s look of jaw dropping disbelief as she watches Janis perform is inspirational to see, as well as Janis’s performance!!
A performance like this can't come from anyplace but deep in the soul - a never to be matched talent, God given, and gone way to early. RIP JJ, you are missed by all of us that grew up loving the Blues with you. God rest your soul girl!
There are a handful of live performances out of the tens of thousands that appear on You Tube, that are truly legendary and that will most probably go down in musical history. This is one of them.
The greatest female music performance of all time ........ her first in mainstream , she is the Texas Twister .........when Mama Cass is going WOW , you are Golden ...
What in thee freak, this woman was a tsunami of blues perfected! I'm black, and I was born in 1980, so I don't know what I'm talking about, all I can say is she was before my time, but the feeling she emotes is pure electricity!
The raspy voice really accentuates the hurt in her heart. I hate to say it but it's beautiful how she put all of her hurt into her singing. I'm sorry she went through what she went through but I'm glad she found a way to express it. Unfortunately she couldn't let all of it out and passed too soon. Much love from her home state, Texas!
I was born in 1952. I loved and felt alternative music while my Mother tried to 'save me' from Rock and Roll. I left home at 17 to explore my own World that was growing in alternative Jazz and prog rock. I found Janis and my music juices just ran wild listning to her. To this day I regret not being at her motel to help her when she felt lonely. My parents died and I am stoic-British not crying, but if you mention Janis I tear up and weep in solitude. Why did she have to die?
Janis Joplin. incomparable voice. The music flows through your entire body. A white woman, but with a distinctive voice of blues singer. A diva. One of the strongest voices of all time. Miss ... But Janis Joplin is eternal, irreplaceable ...
I absolutely love that woman (Edit: Cass Elliot) in the crowds reaction. Not only is she impressed, but its like she's just seen the barriers break for women. Janis was the inspiration for not only women but for all the outcast people who feel like they don't have a chance at being something huge.
Maybe my favorite rock and roll moment. I looked in the comments to see if someone had said it for me and you did. Every time I hear Janis I feel I get that look Mama Cass did. I just experienced magic. Wish one person these days had a millimeter of that raw talent and we got to hear it.
Yes! I kept wondering who that beautiful girl was they kept showing in the audience, and then it came to me s she mouthed "Wow" , I wonder if performing in front of Cass made her nervous, or she gave this look in the end like "dang, girl I hope you liked it ! Yes you did. " That is soul full stuff right there. That whiskey soaked throat just screaming out loud, Wow indeed. And the lady had on some cool shoes too.
