I'm going to be honest, at first this song was interminable to listen to, after some time, I got hooked and kept incessantly listening to it, something about this song is so beautiful...
I went to Pompei just to stand in the very same spot where they stood. I was listening to Pink Floyd in my headphones, it was absolutely epic! Then I went to Naples and had a pizza.
Doesnt that just confirm the INFINITE GREATNESS OF PINK FLOYD! (ITS Thanksgiving day 2020... I'm listening this morning to my most favorite 100 pink floyd songs, starting here!)
Floyd are timeless, I started to listen to them when I was 6/7. I'm now 46 and love their music more each time I hear them. Their music has literally saved my life on dark, dark days.
Amen to that lovely fact...been loving their music for about 45 years now..this is my favorite of all their albums,I think.Definately trippy, the accoustics of the empty coliseum are amazing!!!!🥰❤💯
I saw a youtube comment that was so beautiful, it made me teary-eyed. 🥺 A man wrote: "In 1972, as a teenager, I sat in a dark room, smoking a joint, listening to Pink Floyd on my headphones. Here I am, 50 years later, doing the exact same thing. I'm blessed to have lived during the time of Pink Floyd."
Yeah, dear ELENA❤ ; YOU'RE SOOO RIGHT!! MUSIC NOT OF THIS WORLD ~ BUT FROM A FAR OFF GALAXY ! ! ! 😊 BERNIE GERMANY (ALSO BOLLYWOOD LOVER 🎉!). GREET YOU / BYE 😊
This was the moment the band really jelled into the perfect unit! Everyone was on their top game! They tried this on Atom Heart Mother, but wasn’t ready yet. It all came together HERE!!
This is a fact. I have visions of my entire past present and sometimes even future listening to this band. No other band brings me on a trip that’s even close to what this band does. They’re truly therapeutic legends and will never be forgotten
I'm 26 years old, and I discovered Pink Floyd a decade ago. The only reason I'd want to go back in time is to experience a Pink Floyd concert, both during the Syd Barrett era and after. I'm not complaining about the era I was born in; I'm lamenting what I missed out on.
Nowadays young people have never heard of stuff before 1980, like Led Zeppelin, brilliant, technically excellent and visionary people. today they listen to synthetic products like trappers that last 3 months, made with AI and autotune.....
The first time I watched this video, my friends explained it to me while we were eating umm brownies. they are playing for the dead of the disaster at Pompeii (the ghosts obliterated in place without warning). Then my young self was like WHOA (didn't associate the volcano with playing to an empty ancient theater, and then it made amazing sense).
I went to Pompeii few days ago, I put my headphones on and played songs from this concert, TDSOTM and Meddle. Amazing experience, I just felt like I was in 1973, didn't even realize the walk lasted almost 4 hours.
The thing I find most amazing is that they have plaques on the wall commemorating the great event. The locals remember two times in history...Vesuvius and Pink Floyd.
Yeah I took my sister's and brother in law in I think 1974 whatcha movie about this we all took acid I forgotten Terry never took before and driving home light bulbs went off in my head but thanks for God we made it home safely 🙏
ive been listening to floyd for over 12 years, since i was 10, and to this day, when i listen to this stuff i BAWL my eyes out, EVERY. TIME. ive listened to thousands of hours of music. went to college for music theory and guitar. to this day, floyd has some of the most unique, chilling, daunting, and sacred music of any band i have ever heard. i will continue to cry to this song until THE gods takes my life. floyd for life. may we stand on the shoulders of the giants that came before us to see higher than any one before. love to all of you. haters and lovers.
Le jours où je partirais je veut que mes cendres soit réparties dans une forêt pour qu ensuite je puisse grimper dans l au-delà tranquillement sur se morceau ✨️✨️
Plot twist: John Lennon actually sent this comment from his grave.... I hope people understand the joke. You didn't? Okay, I'm going to give a hint... Look at the commenter's name
Went to Naples and Pompei with the wife. Visited the amphitheater. The wife said, "Wow, over thousand years ago Romans filled this place". I said, 'Ya, but Pink Floyd played here!"
The day I visited it was feckin closed :( For no other reason than bloody David Gilmour, who was performing there that night (See Live at Pompeii 2017). I had absolutely no idea he was performing and we couldn’t get tickets for love nor money. Whenever I watch this video, I think of me stood outside, arms crossed and annoyed that I can’t see inside of the amphitheater, like a social conservative in the 60s 😂 Ah well. I have a funny tale to tell and I can watch the performance anytime on Blu-ray 🎸 👍🏽
Arguably the best Pink Floyd song ever written. The Pompeii version is so much better than the studio version. Gotta love that bass line towards the end.
I don’t care what anyone says this was Pink Floyd’s best song. This is truly the only song in which all four members are completely in sync. It also blends their psychedelic side with their blusey side. And finally in the words of Rick on this song “We found our feet, we figured out we could do this without Syd.” We got Darkside two years later. To put it bluntly Echoes is Pink Floyd
@@5Cats i agree! Watched it years ago with Echoes and it worked great! You cue the song right when the title comes up for Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite (the final sequence)
Remarkable words "we could do this without Syd". Syd Barrett was the "genius" of Pink Floyd. PF with Syd and PF without - two different bands. "Meddle" (Pompeii concert based mostly on this LP) perhaps was the border between "Syd" and "non Syd" Pink Floyd. It was both psychedelic (like Syd's music) and modern bluesy (like Waters-Gilmour).
Overhead the albatross Hangs motionless upon the air And deep beneath the rolling waves In labyrinths of coral caves The echo of a distant time Comes willowing across the sand And everything is green and submarine And no one showed us to the land And no one knows the where's or why's But something stirs and something tries And starts to climb toward the light Strangers passing in the street By chance, two separate glances meet And I am you and what I see is me And do I take you by the hand And lead you through the land And help me understand the best I can? And no one calls us to move on And no one forces down our eyes No one speaks and no one tries No one flies around the sun Cloudless everyday You fall upon my waking eyes Inviting and inciting me to rise And through the window in the wall Come streaming in on sunlight wings A million bright ambassadors of morning And no one sings me lullabies And no one makes me close my eyes So I throw the windows wide And call to you across the sky
6:26 has to be the most insane groove I have ever heard. I grew up on metallica etc. and was always a "metal" guy but damn, i have never heard anything like this haha I have been nonstop listening to it all week!
according to the filmmaker, there were two local kids that managed to sneak in while they were filming this concert. he allowed them to stay and watch the entire performance.
The legend says that those two kids were in fact the echoes of two ancient roman souls who wanted to witness the legendary band performing where they once lived and played. When the concert was over, the kids vanished without a trace and nobody saw them ever again.
The fact that this was filmed with nobody in the audience just makes me adore Pink Floyd even more, it gives it this feeling as if this concert withstands the test of time, creating the illusion that the concert is live to anyone who watches it at any time, as they are the only audience spectating.
It really creates a sense of isolation and creates a focus squarely on the band. Question for you. Have you seen Stop Making Sense, the live Talking Heads movie directed by Jonathan Demme? Though there was an audience in attendance, he made a point of never filming the audience. He wanted the focus to be squarely on the band, not unlike this film. I think stuff like this is fascinating.
Did you notice that when the lyrics are being sung Rick glances over to Dave 👍 best Floyd lyrics ever, and I don't know know a band that comes close to Floyd.
It was actually around about the tipping point where we began to descend into depraved materialism and lunatic ideology, ultimately leading to mass nihilism. So it could be a high point, in that we may never reach that peak again.
My pops died last october at the age of 60 from health problems and this was his favorite song. He tought me about music at an early age and to love the classic rock period and I will listen to this song 5 times a week just to think about my pops, the legend and just how absolutely badass he was! I have my first kid due in about a month and I will teach him to love Pink Floyd as well!
This is probably in the top three performances or songs I’ve ever heard. Im 59 and love music including Led Zeppelin. I would place this in the rotating top three greatest songs I’ve ever experienced.
This video just blows me away every single time I watch it. This is the best music video ever. If the world around me is bringing me down, this always soothes the soul.
What a phenomenal performance. This was Pink Floyd at their best. No egos, no fighting, just four musicians trying to play their instruments the best that they are capable of. This is history as they will never be this way again. Remember one thing, you can’t change time.
ECHOES is the most important song ever written, to me, listening to it takes me back to mooses grandmothers house in the 70s, listening to meddle in various states of mind..he had a great german shepherd that he named echo...it was a wild time ,but i survived , and still love this song
David Gilmour is why I play guitar. I love this just as much now at 57 and sober as I did at 16 tripping on LSD. Pink Floyd is the only band that can be that great at both of my extremes!
Gotta agree, Dave construction is deceptively simple but produces the biggest music, I'm hopeless guitarist, but Gilmour lets me dream, just amazing 😊✌️
I'm 50 and David Gilmour is my biggest influence on guitar. Him and Jimi are the reasons I'm a Strat man! Love the close up on the fretboard in this video to see the licks!
Me too ! No more drugs, man..... just music . I still have my black strat., tube amp.s, fuzz face pedal, analog delay box etc. decades later. This actual film made me want to learn to play the guitar and this stuff in particular.
This theme is similar to the song "la poderosa muerte" , alturas de machu pichu " of the Chilean group "the jaivas. The difference is that the song of the jaivas is the lyrics of the poem by pablo neruda" heights of machu pichu "winner of awards nobeles "
@@andijw79 Most guitarist wish they could play like Gilmour. I always thought he was the bridge from blues to new wave type guitar playing. Cream to the Cars? Maybe it was the whole band?
@fullswing well he means that without Syd there would be no wish you were here and the wall becuase those songs were based on his life. He didn't have a direct involvement with the albums nor did he mean to inspire him but he did when he became crazy. I don't like the pre gilmour albums at all or any of Syds work. But you have give him credit for giving the band the boost at the start. There would be no pink Floyd without Syd. There would also be no pink Floyd if he stayed though. (well you wouldn't heard of them)
I'M 69 AND LOVE ALL OF THE ROCK TYPE MUSIC ❤🎉😊!! FAVORITE (NO 1) IS, SINCE MY 14TH BIRTHDAY, AMAZING & EXCITING U R I A H H E E P 😊🎉❤ !!!!!! BERNIE GERMANY 😊

dude the first time I saw this I had just gotten insanely stoned for the first time and I legit felt like the piano player/vocalist was Jesus Christ lol. I was so baked I thought Jesus Christ was a vocalist in Pink Floyd.
I can listen to heavy metal, 46 minute long prog rock songs, and Banana Phone and a song about putting Limes in a Coconut and I get an equal amount of enjoyment from all of them. Help.
@@shubhayubasu7695 I mean, Love Yourself was decent, but most of his songs aren't my cup of tea, or coffee as I drink coffee and not tea. I can say he does have a fairly impressive vocal range, but I don't know how much of that is due to post production. K-Pop is something I don't care about and don't even want to listen to.
Thank you David Gilmour for giving us amazing music and remaining humble Thank you Roger for providing some of the most detailed and meaningful lyrics ever put into a song Thank you Nick for being able to stick with the band as it’s only constant member, shining through always. Thank you Rick for taking the harsh words of roger and dealing with being so underrated despite your crucial contributions. And thank you Syd, for giving Pink Floyd a life-long legacy and giving them a reason to play.
Man thank Pink Floyd both past and present. Their music remains and will remain timeless. Already immortalized by innovation they pioneered and many other bands of the time pioneered beautiful era for music. Wonder what our generation of music will have to say about us rn.
Which show/year? My first concert ever was Floyd at county stadium in Milwaukee on September 30, 1987. I was 10 years old and we had field passes so you could walk right up to the stage. Me and my dad!
@@adamwilliamson1151 yeah, kinda pisses you off, don't it? Should be more of a fuss...just then when he thought about tapping that cymbal again, and didn't... Yeah, the man's alright...
I was there today what a amazing experience they have a exhibition and photos for the band i grew up listening to Floyd I always wanted to see it And now I have I was filled with some much emotions Thinking of my late brother who gave me the gift of pink Floyd
Listening to Pink Floyd brings calm to our soul. In this chaotic world, it is at the end of the night that I have some peace. Thank you for existing and making my existence a little less painful.
The section where Roger and Nick drop into that groove and the camera pans around the back of the speakers as Dave smashes out those power chords is surely one of the most iconic moments in rock. Awesome
I'm just amazed how people studiously & wilfully refuse to even acknowledge a nation that produced the Rock playlist for the planet.... Round the back of the speakers where it said - *"PINK FLOYD LONDON!"*
@@thetruth45678 Welcome & you are right *London* is not a nation but I never said it was & some half decent artists come out of other areas & one of them, *Ozzy,* is coming back! 👍🏻

every single member of this band is at the top of their game here. roger waters is just killing that bass line, the way gilmore just holds every note, shakes the life out of it , gives it a little wiggle and sets it free is just amazing... vicious, richard wright could have been a concert pianist. that organ breathes life into this piece, and nick mason on the drums is perhaps the most underrated drummer in the history of rock and here's the most ironic part. floyd was as much a jazz band as anything. their less is more approach to music was stunning. nothing overblown, its like they stripped a song down to its very essence its skeleton. they left huge gaps in their music that always left the listener wanting more in my opinion this was the best band that ever came out of england. a true powerhouse of creativity and craftsmanship i am so grateful that i grew up poor. i somehow managed to frankenstein a radio when i was a kid. we didnt have cool channels where i was in S mississippi, but i ran a wire way up to the top of a sweetgum tree and could now and again pick up a station out of little rock ak, and another from out in Texas somewhere. from that little home made transistor radio i learned about the king biscuit flour hour and wolf man jack. that little radio was like a time machine, an escape pod. i would lay out in the yard at night and try to tune into the airwaves and thats how i first learned of this band. i wish i were there now laying under the stars ,,, just me and that little radio and my dreams of what could be. i am very grateful for those memories.
I know Waters gets plenty of (deserved) praise for his musical writing, but damn, he should get some for his bass guitar skills as well. That bass in the second half is amazing

When I was in high school around 1981 or so, 4 of us went to the local drive in theater (Hendersonville TN) to see this movie. We were the only ones there and so no one was working the ticket window. So we went and parked in the center of the parking lot and then took every speaker (100's of them) and set them on the ground pointing towards the car and sat out on the hood with our own surround sound. It was grand.
It was on the county line where 31E crosses into Davidson County on the banks of Mansker Creek. Looking at the intersection of the highway and the creek, it was on the SE corner.
Great to see Richard Wright singing and Nick Mason looks so cool in this .His drumming is insane and Dave Gilmour just cuts the sky with his chords ........love watching this ....Pink Floyd as a band ....
@@carlneoh5843 What's the matter with you! I'm perfectly entitled to be critical of anyone or any music & if I want to dress that up in a light hearted jibe, what is the fucking problem with that! I've even run down my own nation's music in saying stuff like America dodged a bullet with *The Spice Girls* & some of the more frothy & lightweight music we produce! I'm not being disrespectful to the guy or his nation. Maybe like so much of our more esoteric music, English humour doesn't travel well....
This is like a concert after the end of the world. Can you imagine being the only survivors and saying, "Hey, let's get the band together for one more session."
I have kind the same tough if I have the divine power to bring back a band in their absolutely prime it will be Pink Floyd at their age at 25 with the full catalog

this evening, during quarantine, windows opened on a scaringly silent neighborood somewhere in Italy. I close my eyes and lose myself into my headphones. Into pure bliss. This is my relief. There's still hope.
Well said man...In times like this, music is our only hope. Stay safe. And don't give up on hope 🙂 We all have each others backs in this. Though I follow the footsteps of David Gilmour as a strict atheist, I'll keep praying for you and Italy.
Alessiucciocaro keep your hopes up!! My soul aches for Italia but you will get through this. The entire world should help. All the best from Romania where things aren’t so bad (yet). X
