I have had this beautiful machine for 2 years and am still in the dark about how to do a lot of the embroidery features...have never used the wifi or apps...and I want to learn also! The local store I purchased it from in my small town doesn't offer any real instruction.

Sherrie Johnson Hi Sherrie. My sentiments exactly! If only Janome makes embroidery videos for beginners on RU-vid but they don’t . I learn better by watching and not reading instructions from the manual or the official Janome website. Everyday I search on RU-vid to see if someone has made a step by step embroidery video using the S9 or a similar Janome machine 😣.

Hi Linda, if you are looking for a larger hoop, you may consider the 550E embroidery only and a separate sewing machine or the 15000.

I'm certain there is an extra that you can buy as an optional accessory for the machine, there may even be two? I'm in Australia so have a look on the website relevant to you. I hope you can get an extra one.

I like the open toe F2 foot for decorative stitching as it gives me better visibility.

The S9 is an incredible sewing machine for all kinds of fabrics. If you use the Sewing Applications page you can select the type of fabric you want to sew and the machine will select the proper stitch with the proper settings. There are other advantages include the straight stitch plate, the Acufeed system and the cloth guide. You will love the S9 for sewing.

You need digitizing software to create the embroidery design from an image. Then you can transfer the design wirelessy or via USB to the machine. The machine does not digitize.

The wifi is the biggest difference, which is huge as it allows you to use the apps. Other differences: Embroidery The S9 also includes AcuTools-software for your computer. The 9850 includes no software The S9 has a metal P foot with adjustable foot height. The 9850 has a plastic P foot without adjustable foot height. The S9 includes 3 hoops. The 9850 includes 1 hoop-others are optional. Sewing The S9 comes with more accessories-has the Acufeed feeding system and includes most of the Acufeed feet-huge! The 9850 would require an optional walking foot for quilting. The S9 has a larger foot control The S9 includes the "floater" feet for advanced free motion quilting and variable zigzag The S9 has 100 more stitches and more buttonhole styles The S9 has an improved needle threader These would be the main differences. Also-the 9850 is an Internet model. The S9 is a dealer in-store only model. If you want all the features of the S9 you will want to contact your local dealer. They are on backorder now.

Mita, The Acufeed system and free motion makes quilting in sewing mode a breeze. If you are referring to the embroidery options-the S9 does not have the Acufil features of the 15000 or 500E. However, there are built in quilting designs and you can import any other quilting designs and position them perfectly using the AcuSetter app. Hope this helps.

Janome just changed the color. There is no difference. The newer model has the indigo color.

Each embroidery machine model has hoops specific to that machine. When a design is selected it will indicate the hoop that it fits. The maximum embroidery field of the S9 is 6.7" x 7.9". Using a bigger hoop does not change the embroidery field. If you want a bigger embroidery field the 550E has a maximum field of 7.9" x 14.2".

Any cutting machine can pre-cut appliques in .svg format. The Scan n cut will also read .pes embroidery files or you can scan the image for the applique to be cut. If you have multi formatted designs, you could cut the .pes to use with the .jef embroidery file. The Artistic Edge cutter includes software that will read all embroidery formats, including .jef files that can be brought in to create cut files to export to the Edge cutter. I have no experience with the cricut so I can't say how it would work with embroidery files, but if you have software that reads and writes both .svg and embroidery formats, you should be able to export .svg files for both the cutter and the .jef file for the S9.

Debra, Did you already download the update? When you unzip the download, you will find the update tool and instructions. You hold down the needle up/down key and autolock key to update. So the computer kept saying Windows defender was preventing the opening of the file, anyway to make a long and frustrating story short I clicked on the show more and a "run anyway" tab appeared.EUREKA! I did not have the files on the drive on first two tries which is why I got error message. Thank you SEW much for your help. I am 67 and not very computer savy. I was afraid I would break my machine if I did it wrong.

Now to figure out the cloth guide so different from my MC10000

I'm not sure if you are referring to sewing or embroidery. Either way, once you have selected a font, just turn the page to page 2. There are 5 pages in the fonts for alphabets, numbers, punctuation etc. Hope this helps.
