Probably the best scholarly biography of the Tudor Queen that I’ve read is Eric W. Ives’ “Anne Boleyn” from 1986. More recently, Susan Bordo wrote, “The Creation of Anne Boleyn: In Search of the Tudors’ Most Notorious Queen”, published in 2014, which I read a few years ago. Bordo looks at how Anne was regarded by her contemporaries and how she’s been interpreted by historians and the public in the centuries since her death. Bordo also looks at modern depictions of Anne in historical novels, television series, and stage and film productions. She assesses Genevieve Bujold’s performance as Anne in the 1969 film, “Anne of the Thousand Days” to be the most convincing and historically accurate portrayal that she’s seen. However, I found Natalie Portman’s execution scene in “The Other Boleyn Girl” film from 2008 to be almost too harrowing to watch, especially in a movie theatre. Anne’s daughter, Queen Elizabeth I, has received a similar “ladies-in-waiting” biographical treatment by two women historians: Anna Whitelock’s 2013 book, “The Queen’s Bed: An Intimate History of Elizabeth’s Court”; and Tracy Borman’s 2009 volume, “Elizabeth’s Women: Friends, Rivals, and Foes Who Shaped the Virgin Queen”. Ms. Borman is a familiar face from her many BBC historical documentaries.
