The US decides the YF-23 Black widow is in the category of sixth generation fighter aircraft
The history of the YF-23 fighter aircraft, perhaps the most revolutionary in the history of aviation, is like a solid bestseller. There is a tough confrontation with a rival, a dramatic defeat, and going into the shadows for several decades in order to suddenly rise from the dead!
Seemingly forgotten forever, rejected by US military officials in 1990, YF-23, like the Phoenix bird, is now trying to revive. Of course, not in the same exact form, and not in their homeland, but in... But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Was in the Air Force at the time of the competition. When awarding the game to the F-22, the commander of the air force issued a statement saying that the F-23 outperformed the F-22 but that the F-22 met all of the requested specs for a lower price. He summed it up as simply as that.

@@snoopy9568 not only that there is one man who flew both the YF-23 and the YF-22. There is a reason why the YF-22 was picked. Being able to turn in zero air speed and get a missile off completely decimated the YF-23. The YF-23 had no answer. So you could set up a scenario with the YF-23 trailing the YF-22 and the YF-22 could in essence turn around in defense and fire at the YF-23. If it is the other way around the YF-23 is completely defenseless. All of this is hog wash anyways. There is a reason why F-22’s are no longer produced. The next generation are unmanned AI jets. Exceeding speeds past the SR-71 Blackbird and pulling G’s not humanly possible. There is a top pilot that went head to head with AI and lost 5 times in a row, in simulation. What we are seeing is the last generation of manned jets.
@snoopy9568
@snoopy9568 2 года назад
@@kingsolo6241 I hear what you're saying but there are so many variables to be accounted for in a combat environment. Since most close in air combat occurs in the 350 - 450Kt regime, there is little opportunity for fighters to bleed off that much energy to get to zero air speed fast without making a mess out of the pilot. This is very similar to the type of tactics German pilots used in WWI flying the Fokker Dr1 which could achieve a momentary direction reversal to fire off a burst but at a much slower airspeed combat environment to begin with. At the end of the day, this is a defensive move (which is why the Dr1 was replaced in service) and in today's environment that manoeuvre induces extreme g-forces on the pilot and assuming he hasn't blacked out, he has to attempt split second gun/missile acquisition, lock-on and release making the real world a little harsher than a fly-off between two very large fighters (and maybe the F22 needed vectored thrust in the first place to make up for a loss of manoeuvrability due to size/weight??) In any case, I don't know of any documented cases of this occurring in combat. The literature I've read by different analysts all negate the possibility of this tactic being successful in the real world - just like "viffing" in the Harrier. Too many questions, not enough answers..... My understanding why the F22 was withdrawn from service was because its operating costs per hour were extremely high, the O2 generation caused harm to the pilots and it was not multi-role - features which the F35 was supposed to alleviate (I don't know how give the tiny weapons bay and the flight software problems that still exist!). I agree regarding AI Drones, however, my original remark about hardware/software still stands - not too long ago, Chinese manufactured computer hardware provided backdoors into FBI servers which begged the question at the time, how many other occurrences of intrusion have not been detected - think Huawei. This could be a catastrophic problem in any future AI program. Add to this, digital/hive communications need to be made far more secure - especially with so many Chinese military satellites being launched just in the last twelve months. I think you are right about manned flight, but I hope not - I'm terrified of Skynet! Change the rules - Gravitics!
@kingsolo6241
@kingsolo6241 2 года назад
@@snoopy9568 it boils down to this. If a F-23 is trailing a F-22, the F-22 has great opportunity to turn and retaliate. Being at zero air speed gives you the moment to get a missile off. If it is the other way around the F-23 is defenseless. It has no counter. What the whole F-22 vs F-23 was about was the pilot being able to get home safely.
@snoopy9568
@snoopy9568 2 года назад
@@kingsolo6241 I may have misunderstood your meaning. I thought you were arguing that in close in combat (dogfight) this tactic would be used but I now think that you are saying that at BVR or just inside, and if this is so, I agree that the tactic (although zero airspeed is a stretch, but I take your point) may be used with a good chance of loosing off a missile - but so does the aircraft closing in - an opportunity to retaliate does not in itself guarantee success. However, in a dogfight, which is what the original thread discussed, all would agree that there would just be no time to acquire, lock and fire a missile - the best that can be hoped for is a quick squeeze of 20mm, and hence why analysts like Sprey argue that previous gen fighters are, all things being equal, just as capable without the overblown costs - particularly when dealing with a determined or numerically superior enemy. The past 30 years has not produced this, but the future may provide a rude awakening for us if current events are any indicator. In a previous life when I worked on several fighter types, F-22 pilots stated how embarrassingly easy it was to close in to F-15s who hadn't detected them and achieve first shot success on exercises - normally at BVR or just inside, however when close in, the advantage was quickly lost and it came down to the better pilots who had to rely on cannon and since most combat occurs in this regime, the situation rapidly changes. (Even the aircraft shot down by Navy F-14s carrying 110nm range Phoenix missiles used shorter range missiles because they had to get in close and ID the targets). This speaks to mission parameters. Fighters aren't sent into action just so they can come home. With fighters it is generally, air supremacy, interception and escort (unless MR like the F-18). These roles are about achieving mission success and stopping the enemy from achieving theirs and/or controlling airspace and this is the main rationale behind stealth - get in unseen and fire first. Getting home is what you think about after all of that is done.

This video is full of nonsensical speculation and incorrect info. 1. “Northrop might have been overburdened by the YG-23 development.” There is no evidence of this. However, the F-117 was more successful than the B-2 in terms of being delivered on time and under budget. 2. “The YF-23 provided a long flight at supersonic speed without using the afterburner mode, while the YF-22 did not..” This is nonsense. Both the YF-22 and YF-23 called for an extremely high fuel capacity to support supercruise over long distances. Fact of the matter is the fuel capacity of the ATF requirements was completely unrealistic for a stealthy aircraft that could also pull 9 Gs. But the F-22 can still supercruise through almost all of a 700 NM combat radius with one midair refueling. No other aircraft in the world can match that while carrying a full combat load, except for the Mig-31. 3. The YF-23 never reached Mach 1.8 in supercruise. That was the top speed that it reached. Actually, the aircraft was never tested to find the real top speed. The ATF requirement called for a demonstration of Mach 1.8, so that is what Northrop did. 4. “The F-22 can only fly for 6 minutes or 180 KM.” This is totally false. This is likely a misinterpretation of the F-22 combat radios where the Air Force states that the aircraft would fly a 450 NM combat radius with 100NM supercruise dash. The F-22 can supercruise far longer than that. But it would shorten the range if the aircraft had to fly in a typical high-low-high pattern. But the F-22 can greatly reduce its fuel consumption by flying at high altitude. And the aircraft is much more at home at high altitude, above 45,000 feet, than other aircraft. This is due to the large size of the wings and tails, but also due to TVC. 5. The $379.5 million figure is misleading. It doesn’t make sense to include development cost in a per plane price. The development money had already been spent by the time you reach FOC. LM offered to continue production for $100 million per plane when it was cancelled. That would have made the price comparable to the Typhoon or Rafael, and less than new F-15s. There are other statements in this video that are wrong or totally speculative, but I am tired of writing.

I appreciate you points and corrections. They are well listed and detailed. The F-23 was the faster of the two without afterburner, it was especially fast in supercruise with the GE engines. The F-23 was the stealthier of the two. The F-23 was however a higher risk program that would likely have had more cost overruns and time delays. With its longer range the F-23 would be a great addition for Japan to defend their large amounts of ocean. That is perhaps the real subject of this video. These were nicely detailed points you made

Yes this video is all fantasy, full of misinformation and stories. YF-23 looks pretty, compared to the F-22’s more utilitarian style, but the F-22 was superior in every way - more stealthy, more maneuverable, better dogfighter, equally capable of supercruise and similar speeds, etc. There’s been a weird resurgence of interest in the YF-23 on RU-vid lately, but the F-22 was the superior aircraft, the right design approach, and the right choice for the Air Force.

@@andrewday3206 F-23 was not the stealthier of the two, the F-22 was. Lockheed invented stealth with the F-117 and had the top-secret computer algorithms for shaping an aircraft to maximally deflect radar, and those had only gotten better by the time of the ATF project.
@andrewday3206
@andrewday3206 2 года назад
@@5133937 With respect, you need to do more research. The F-23 was the faster and stealthier of the two. The F-22 was more nimble and was less risky from a development point. No Northrop was not behind in the stealth field, they built and designed the B-2 Spirit! The B-2 used more advanced computer modeling than Lockheed used. That is why the Lockheed Have Blue and F-117 used flat surfaces. It is also why the Northrop Tacit Blue and B-2 used curved blended surfaces. The F-22 was an easier, cheaper and less risky project. The F-23 was faster and stealthier. The F-23 also had longer range.

Based on research and development put into the YF-23 and it being a extremely close rival to the F-22 it would only make sense to use it as base platform to develop Japan's own 5-6Gen fighter. The cost savings alone in R&D, they would be foolish not to.

People who keep saying "by the time you built a 1990s concept jet, the 6th gen jet will already have arrived, too" are saying you shouldn't buy your current top end iPhone or Samsung... you should wait until the next phone arrives. That is silly, since when the "next phone" arrives, you could use that same logic and say, "I'll wait until the one AFTER this one, too" to buy it. Anyway, as you noted: NG has already tested two YF-23 with its truly semi-revolutionary tail-end design (totally different from all other fighter jets from the early 1900s to the F-22 and F-35, all still very traditional in their vertical stabilizers). Japan doesn't need to spend $2B - $5B doing all that heavy lifting that NG had to do in the 1980s and 90s. You make about 30% refinement and modification to the YF-23 and you will NOT get a "next gen jet" better than it is for another 30-50 cycle of years, of top end fight jet building... so building the semi-revolutionary YF-23 isn't building a 1990s concept fighter jet. Rather, it is building a fighter jet that no other traditional fighter jet, not even the F-22, could match (again, in the next 30 - 50 years) in speed and in stealth --- the two most crucial metrics Japan must have, for it to deal with a giant and aggressive neighbors like China, which does have decent stealth jets... The engine, electronic, avionics, computation, coating, fabrication, etc. are, of course, going to be at least as modern as what the mid range F-35 has. Japan's own Mitsubishi Heavy Industries-licensed/built F-15 and F-16 are about 2-3 times as expensive as America's F-15 and F-16 and at least twice as good, too, so there's no doubt, working with NG, that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries would crank out a modified F-23 that would just blow everyone out of the water, for now and for the next 30 - 50 years... From Okinawa to its most remote little islands by the east coast of Taiwan wouldn't be any problem, for an F-23 size jet, with two engines, almost twice the upper speed, and about twice the fuel the mid range F-35 has.

the YF23 airframe is a dated design. we have since greatly improve on aerodynamic. and since everything else is build for the airframe, changing the airframe mean everything would be obsolete. you are better off starting from the ground up. especially when designing an aircraft, the biggest factor is it operational requirement and japan is physically a very different country. we can see this gap different in the chinese variation of aircraft. asia pacific fighter requires longer operation range to cover the ocean, there are no bases for them to land. US fighter are never design for this. while the F16 and F15 could be equiped with confronting fuel tank, you can't do that with a stealth fighter, it is either design for that range, or it isn't.

There are many misconceptions in this video. The lack of thrust vectoring did NOT have an appreciable difference between maneuverability of the two jets. The 23's tail planes were able to move swiftly throughout the travel limits, and had GREAT control authority. They did not *need* thrust vectoring. That's coming straight from the pilot who flew both jets - Paul Metz. It had more to do with the issues the USAF had seen with the B-2 and were not confident that Northrop would be able to deliver that system without seeing the same issues they'd seen with the B-2. The selection was not based on the flight demos or anything like that - it was made on political, non-technical factors.

I work at Northrop and in the Skunk Works, and was the CM Manager on the YF-22. That 30 year old is still king of the hill, can spot and kill anything before being picked up, even today. The contract was for a fighter for long range engagements, first-look, first-shot capabilities, not close in dog fighting. But the YF-22 had agility way beyond the G limit of pilots, if used could put them to sleep. So Lockheed was crafty, they marketed the agility of the YF-22 to the egos of pilots, which are humongous, capabilities that would never be used in modern air combat... so they won. Truth be told, the YF-23 was the clear winner of that competition. It did not get selected because of the anti-Northrop bias in the Air Force. This was not the first time this happened. The YF-17 destroyed the YF-16 in fly offs, so the Air Force selected the loser and stopped the competition. Fortunately the YF-17 survives today with the Navy as the F-18. President Carter requested a fighter for foreign sales, and the F-20 Tigershark could reach fighting altitude before any fighter in the US Airforce, at a fraction of the cost, so the Air Force squashed that program as well. Kelly Johnson did not like the Navy, and the Air Force does not like Northrop, always been that way. Stupid.

@@charlesfollette9692 it was always one of the other never be both. The issue with new air Fighters is you can't just split a contract and order a few from each. Did you see three companies competing for the government contract and the more fires that are ordered the lower the price gets on the fighters. It's not a small difference in price, because they have to recoup the money that they spent I'm building new construction yards, new assembly lines, fire new labor, paying the technicians and Engineers who don't get paid per aircraft that's sold. So to even make it worth a defense contractors time to invest all that time, work, and money besides the size of the contract has to be discussed ahead of time. Say for example Hereafter 500 Fighters over the next 10-15 years, you can't wait till they both design the final prototype and that's only say you know what I only want 250 from each of you. They would both walk away from the deal and you want to get either. The only way to have gotten both of them would have been to by the prior agreed on number of crafts from each of the defense contractors. Which means you would have to literally double your 5th generation air superiority defense budget, which Congress would never agree to. Now say as an example you want a small contract to buy like 20 f-15s, you'll be allowed to do that without having to pay for a huge 500 more aircraft contract. That's because the F-15 construction yard, assembly lines, and F-15 Workforce is still assembled in filling orders for other countries so they wouldn't have to pay all that money to do it all over again. The only required to buy big contracts with any fighter project who currently doesn't have a base of operations and assembly line active. We just went to that issue last year when they were debating in Congress on whether or not to relaunch the F-22 program. They said it would cost just about the same amount of money that we're going to spend on the sixth generation fighter program. They knew that Chinese and Russian 5th generation were close to being complete, so they had to decide between two possible projects. The first option was relaunched the F-22 since we already have blueprints for a working model will be much quicker than the 6th generation, but you take the Gamble that if you do that and China's and Russia's 5th generation Fighters end up being stronger, then your shit out of luck cuz it won't be enough time cancel it and focus on the sixth generation. The second option was just invest towards the sixth generation which will take longer, but it will have 100% guarantee to be much more powerful then the Chinese and Russian 5th generation. And since they started using 3D printing technology and computer as well as computer simulation programs they can reduce the timeframe needed for research and assembly down to about 1/10 of the time is it used to take. So because of everything listed above the door of opportunity for the US to own any new F-22 or yf-23 anytime in the future is forever closed.

Thrust vectoring doesn't bleed too much speed per say. The relation is that, thrust vectoring allows the aircraft to pull high angle of attack, and that logically bleeds speed. The YF-23 having comparable maneuverability, even without the use of thrust vectoring, would still result in a similar energy state. That aspect would rather be impacted by the airframe design (including everything really, its curves, weight, thrust output etc.)

Both "matched and exceeded" all requirements. But Lockheed had more convincing and aggressive flight schedule (that's how F-14 won Iranian deal in time), Lockheed not only build to requirements but asked USAF what they really want and answer was "Super F-15" and Lockheed built exactly that. YF-23 had more controversial and less spacious weapons bay. Also, Lockheed wasn't building any fighter back then, and Northrop had hands full with Hornets and B-2 (with cost overrruns). Also, for some reason Navy was still allowed to vote. Note that both ATFs are vastly stripped down compared to original specs ( F-22 doesn't have side looking radar arrays ) and YF-23 was more sophisticated, but also most risky, given that it required YF-120 GE engines to reach full potential. Today has proven that even F-22 carries to few missiles (not to mention inferior YF-23), that indeed supercruise and range would be better served with GE engines and YF-23 aerodynamics ....

The YF-23 was arguably the better plane in many ways and very arguably a plane we needed for the 21st century. Yet it's also arguable that the YF-23 would have been an even bigger failure than the F-22 with respect to producing a sufficient quantity for an even remotely acceptable price, all happening at a point in time when the need for an air superiority fighter was being questioned (that's certainly changed in recent years). Neither of the two main contractors have a very good record of cost control, and cost control gets only more difficult as you bring more advanced technologies to market, especially since many of those technologies fail or require many additional design iterations to refine. We'll never know the exact reasons the YF-22 was selected, but risk appetite likely played a pretty big role, especially considering how this came at a time when the public was largely outraged by the B2's cost overruns. All that said, it is kind of comical how so many people kept saying the F-35 was some 'affordable' alternative...

The reason the YF-22 won was because in maneuverability, because you can expect that restrictive rules of engagement will eliminate your ability to use your stealth to kill at range. Also you have to expect to eventually face stealthy enemy aircraft which would also take away your long range kill opportunities. The Dogfight is still far from dead.

The only clear advantage the YF-22 had over the YF-23 is in the low-speed portion of the flight envelope. I assert that the YF-23 had maneuvering advantages at most fighter speeds encountered due to specific excess energy advantages.

The reason the YF-22 won was because Lockheed has been bribing generals, congressman and countries to buy their trash since the 40s, because James Symington was invested in Corvair and Lockheed. The reason the YF-23 lost, just as the F-20 lost, just as the YF-17 lost, is because James Symington threatened Jack Northrup with "You'll never get another frontline contract" after Northrup refused to give Corvair the YB-49 design. That's why Northrup was relegated to making target drones (also why they are so far ahead of other companies in drone tech).

F-35 can't supercruise. It can only coast some time at supersonic speed after first using fuel guzzling afterburner to push it to high speed. That shorter fatter airframe just wasn't designed to be top performance fighter, unlike F-22.

I believe the F22 had bigger internal weapons bays than the F23, which is an important consideration. This would partly explain its increased drag.
@anaist9753
@anaist9753 2 года назад
No. The YF23 has a bigger internal weapon bays. The only reason why the YF22 was selected is mainly because of the Navy. The YF22 is more of a normal fighter aircraft like the F14/F15 at that time. The YF23 on the other hand.. that thing is massive. Making a carrier capable YF22 will likely be cheaper and not a big risk to take. This have been proven on the navy variant YF23 the " NATF-23 ". The YF23 will require a lot of modification an refiguring just to make it carrier capable. After the YF22 was choosen. The navy said they did not want to operate F22. If we had known this earlier.... we might get the YF23.

I wonder just how much Ole Uncle Sam would have saved in fuel alone over the life of the program? From what I understand the YF-23 did meet all of the super maneuverability requirements without heavy&complex thrust vectoring nozzles(which I'd imagine would coat more). Those V-tails were especially powerful&looked soooo cool too! In the end the Airforce wanted an ATF which because of the high angle of attack the F-22 achieved at 60° with sharp 9g turns that tested the most fit of pilots. The Airforce got just that. Tbh I think it was more politics at play? Especially after the B-2 had huge cost over runs, the top brass was probably leary especially if they had to answer to Congress if the YF-23 had similar issues concerning costs? Both are beautiful Ladies no doubt, but only one could be Home Coming Queen. Despite just how beautiful the YF-23 is, I mean she looks like something that would give the X-Wing in Star Wars a run for its money Lol. I certainly do hope the Japanese do what they've always done Wayne, make vast improvements. Because if ever a fighter deserved a 2nd chance? It would be the Black Widow II

The YF23 was the superior air platform, but the YF22 was a close second in terms of overall ratings. The US military choose the YF22 over the YF23 because Lockheed Martin had a better reputation for delivering on time and within budget, while Northrop/McDonnell Douglas had a proven track record of running behind on deliverables and WAY over budget.

I've always heard that the biggest reason that the YF-22 was chosen over the YF-23 was due to "political engineering" from Lockheed and Boeing. They essentially had lobbyists everywhere and promised to provide jobs across the entire country, and whatever else it took to sway the choice towards themselves.

I generally like your videos, I'm very interested in the subject. I can't help but comment that sometimes there are glaring factual mistakes. This particular video had me cringing numerous times. The biggest is that you say the F-22 cannot "Super Cruise", the ability to fly super sonic without afterburners. It indeed can, it was designed that way from the start and was the first fighter aircraft put into production that could. When you base an argument over which aircraft is better with facts that aren't true then what's the point? The main reasons the F-22 was chosen (I'll give you credit, you did mention it) was The Air Force was hesitant of giving the contract to Northrup because of their performance on previous contracts. The delays and cost over runs on the B-1 were legendary. Another reason was marketing. Lockheed went out of their way to test fly the test airplane in every possible scenario to show off it's capabilities, dog fighting for example. Whereas Northrup was more low key, it did what it had to. I personally feel the F-23 was a better aircraft. Better stealth and better range for example. Now that things in the Pacific are getting tense I bet the Air Force is regretting the decision to field an aircraft with such a limited range. Remember, the F-22 doesn't fly off of carriers. I'm glad Japan is giving a version of the F-23 consideration. I hope it works out and I'll be rooting for them.

Also mentioning the yf23s p&w and GE engines as if they were a feature and not a predetermined requirement that both companies develop a version of their aircraft as a testbed for each of the two power plants, as both engines existed before the planes. Too many whoppers in this video to mention
