The phrase says it all: "Geisha hunting, Maiko hunting". They're people trying to live their lives, not animals. Unless you're willing to pay for their attention and time under the rules of their employment, I say keep a respectful distance and don't burden them. 🤷🏾‍♂⭐

When I visited Japan specifically Kyoto four years ago I noticed that the biggest culprit that caused the problems in the Gion/Geisha district were Baby Boomers in their 60’s & 70’s acting entitled & demanding Geisha and Maiko take photos with them and grabbing at their garments to get their attention too

I 100% support the Gion tourist ban. They tried the soft approach with the photography ban, and it was largely ignored. I witnessed myself a tour group blocking the path of a poor Geisha/Maiko and treating her almost like a circus animal to get selfies while the poor girl just tried to get to her next appointment. A beautiful place where people live and work has been turned into selfie-stick Disneyland, so we tourists have nobody else to blame but ourselves. ⭐

I was there earlier this week and on my way to Gion Corner i saw a Geiko. Luckily, there weren't many people around on that specific alley. I gave her her space and smiled, she was soooo pretty. So glad i decided to tour this month cause so much its changing everywhere starting April.

Thank you for the update on Kyoto as I’m going there in a couple of days so that was definitely good to know. As a resident i am also fed up with tourists. Its just too many tourists and too many who behaving incredible bad everyday in tokyo especially around akihabara, ikebukuro , shinjuku area. I cant go to work in peace without people eating food in trains, are on the phones, talk extremly loud, sitting on the seats for people with health issues. Stop blocking the way with your lagguage snd stop filming us! I dont want to be filmed neither does any other japanese want that! I hope we get a tourists limit soon or atleast guided tourists groups leaded by locals. But those tourists need to be controlled

Think of it this way: Japan is mostly mountainous, so the major cities are already densely populated, none more so than Tokyo and Osaka. Kyoto Nara and Hiroshima aren't really that big in terms of size either. Throw in scores of tourists (foreign and domestic) and of course things will get testy. I didn't observe any bad behavior in Kyoto (I was too busy visiting shrines and gardens to go to Geisha Alley) but Tokyo was slammed my last week there, I made it a point to ride the last subway cars and even then had to wait for several cars to pass by before I could get on a less crowded train. I think there have been plenty of studies that prove anywhere around the world, when you have a dense population packed in together frustration levels rise for everyone.

With Kyoto's overcrowding, I remember going to Golden Pavilion and it being only accessible by local bus. Of course it was completely packed, then we got to Golden Pavilion and that was pretty packed too. It's a reason why on the next trip to Kyoto, I just avoided those areas altogether. One bad experience I had for booking was for 2020, prior to lockdown, I had booked a hotel, only to get a message from the hotel about 2 months later saying that they had made a mistake that the cost was too low, and that I needed to rebook. I don't want to have that happen the next trip. As for avoiding expensive cities, that's why I like to book in the adjacent cities, maybe 1hr train ride away, for cheaper hotels, but for people who want to party late in the night, not their best option for late night train users.
@NinjaMonkeyguy
@NinjaMonkeyguy 2 месяца назад
For me 1hr away is to far as it would eat into 2hours of travel every day. But if it works for you then great, and also it's nice to be in areas with less tourists for sure! as for the hotel thing, I always book online just incase!

just got back from Japan Monday, 3/18. We went to the Kyoto/Gion district. It is a lovely area with tourists, but not overcrowded. We saw a Geisha show, 1 hour, it included two bottled teas and two dances that lasted 15 minutes. We had hoped for an explanation of the dances. The remaining 45 minutes were playing hand games with the geisha and photo ops. Surprised at how expensive it was, $148.63 USD or 22,000 JPY

Kyoto loves to overcharge and I don't understand why people want to go there. Go to Kanazawa or Nikko instead! Tourism traps in Tokyo... some have been around for ages (like Skytree, Disneyland). It's even more important to look at prices in Japan before you leave so you know if someone is trying to scam. 'Active pricing' is polite way of saying 'Passive scamming' and it is *everywhere*!
@ellye3400
@ellye3400 2 месяца назад
But it is not a 'scam' so it is incorrect to refer to it this way. There is no dishonesty or fraud going on. This is simple market economics. The costs of leasing premises in prime business or tourist areas, or at brand new facilities such at Toyosu are much higher than other areas. Places that charge the highest prices in Japan for food and drink are in Marunouchi, Akasaka and Ginza have been this way for 100 years and in Kyoto elite establishments for centuries but notice the media don't jump on that. The new Toyosu outlet is serving premium grade products: Blue Fin tuna, uni, snow crab, all high value, specially sourced product. Beware the anti-tourist hype the Japanese media are prone to - with the same stories being picked up by international media -like the Toyoso seafood bowl story. Japan had deflation for many years after the bubble era in the 1990s so it is coming as a shock to many to see prices rising on everyday items from beer to bread. Japan relies on imports to survive - rising costs are a global issue.
@NinjaMonkeyguy
@NinjaMonkeyguy 2 месяца назад
Yes these things are everywhere but in Japan recently becoming more common (but not widespread). As for Skytree and Disney I don't see them as tourist traps especially Disney which is far cheaper compared to other countries right?

So surprised to see this news because I am surprised that people think its ok to go to the Geisha district just to take pics without making a geisha appointment. I am Japanese and its considered rude to go into an establishment and just take pictures or loiter without making a purchase or an appointment..It is like going to a restaurant and just sitting there without ordering anything ....

🌟 I guess I don't care one way or the other. Tourists can be destructive or overburden the areas they visit in numerous ways. When I go I don't hit the tourist spots too much or I go when it is off season. Mostly I like Ishigaki but Kamakura is good too. Yokohama station is nice. Everyone has their favorite spot. I suppose Kiyomizudera is the best temple but that may have been that it was hot and they had zenzai (frijoles) at the end.

⭐ Well, Nathans video's are always worth multiple stars in my opinion. I'll admit to being of two minds on increasing fees for foreign tourists and creating resident only access areas. I'm not against the resident only access area because some tourists seem to forget that these are where real people actually live. They are not reenactors performing for tourist entertainment. However, it cost money to maintain these important cultural heritage sites, and small fees ear marked for this purpose don't bother me. The caveat is that future politicians may decide to raise fee's for other things since fleecing tourists won't rile their voter base. I've also noticed that hotel prices have suddenly jumped and deals are harder to find. I was all set to take advantage of the Klook affiliate link for some deals when let's just say life had some other ideas. Still, a great information laden video. 🌟

Of course, Japan, Kyoto, and the Gion district must look out for their country and culture first and foremost. The reason so many of us love to visit Japan is the culture. It would break my heart if everything I find appealing and interesting about this beautiful country would smoulder because of us tourists. Every country has something unique and beautiful, something we always must respect, and as guests, our duty is to make sure that we also take care of the country we visit - otherwise, we all lose collectively, worldwide.

Another great video. Japan should do this to help with tourism costs... Have an "esta" style system like the USA has. Charge everyone $10 or whatever for "visa checks" before they arrive via the visit Japan website, 30 million visitors a year means this could generate revenue of $300 million and also make the immigration process quicker/smoother. I don't think any tourist spending $1000s already will care much about $10 as the USA model has already proven.
@japanjapanichiban
@japanjapanichiban 2 месяца назад
The government could then distribute this money to different areas of Japan to help with issues caused by over tourism like in Gion and Osaka at the moment. It could be split by the % of tourism each area gets also, so the more troubled places get more of the cash.

I’m really glad I got the chance to explore that ancient part/Gion district of Kyoto four years ago before this ban but I’m also really sad I will never get the chance to really enjoy the freedom of a walk around there again with those restrictions just because of a lot of idiots ruining it for the rest of us that don’t even take photos but just like to enjoy the scenery and atmosphere but also Japan has that reputation of seeing everything in black & white with no shades of grey or nuance and painting everyone with a broad brush

Personally, I think a tourist tax is nessecary in all large tourist locations. Travel is a luxury and should be treated as such and if the monies given to taxes actually go toward maintaining those locations that's the ethical way to do it. However, I think Hotel fees are stupid. Just build the fee into the rate.
@bonwatcher
@bonwatcher 2 месяца назад
A few hundred yen per night is not at all bad in comparison to what the US does with its fake room rates by adding a "resort fee." In Las Vegas it can be as high as $50 (almost ¥7500) per night. They advertise the room rate as say $100/nt. but with added resort fee, lodging tax and sales tax it could actually be closer to $200/nt. The problem I see is cities taking advantage of customers as time passes and making it a way to make more money for the city and ending up just like the resort fee here in the US.

Thank you for this new rule about certain alleys in the Gion District are banning tourists. Definitely if signs are put up, I’d want to know how they look like so I would know not to go down certain alleys. And I know not to photograph the geisha (they’re just normal people trying to get to work on time; they’re NOT zoo animals.)
