The thing with Nami being dry / humorless and cold makes sense imo. She was like that at the start of the series due to her circumstances. She became more open with the crew after Arlong Park

Funny about Nami is, she didn´t start "voluptuous and with little clothing", she literally started very tame on her looks.

Tbh I'm a Zoro and Mihawk fan, and but in the live action I found myself obsessing over Sanji. Taz is a a very charismatic actor. Fingers crossed this Live adaptation would be successful.

Emily Rudd's Nami was great, especially once we got to the end episodes. She carried those emotional scenes

The fact that Oda himself had input and veto power for this series probably helped its authenticity and smart decisions quite a bit.

I feel like the actor that plays Usopp will have the biggest role in the entire live-action series. Usopp helps to settle tense full moments with his humor, and when you see him stand up to people when no right person in there mind would it makes you love Usopp even more for who he is.

You can tell they scaled it back in tone and characterization. Because its obvious they're adapting a cartoon, so the actors would come off as kind of goofy. But they maintained the spirit of each character. It really feels like One Piece meeting our world.

kinda interesting that the japanese audience (not all but some) are HAPPY that hollywood is making this to avoid the over the top nature of japanese live action, while american audiences are kinda irritated another anime is being "hollywood-ized". it's interesting to see different viewpoints from different cultures 100%. also, to be fair, no matter what your culture is, i think most can agree Luffy was always going to be nearly impossible to adapt 1 to 1 in terms of his manga/anime portrayal. it always made sense to me that they'd go in a different direction. i think Luffy's mentality is WAY too cartoony to adapt directly, so making him slightly more serious/self-aware always made sense to me. i understand why some don't vibe with it though

a lot of people don't know that the Japanese audio is going to be the entire original cast of one piece too so if you don't like the English audio just switch it over lol

As a fan of One Piece since the beginning, I honestly think the live action version of Nami is one of the best things of the show! She is STUNNINGLY good.

I can't get over how on point Roger and Garp are. I think the actor nailed the type of mixed feelings and uncertainty Garp would have if he was there at Roger's execution. As for Arlong, I think people needed to curb their expectations. I really don't know what they expected, they were never going to perfectly transition Arlong from anime to live action, it's just not possible. Also I think what people are getting hung up on is the nose, which, let me remind you Arlong is a sawfish fishman, the teeth on his nose are better than if they just gave him a barbed nose. They did the best they could. I really hope they don't skip over Don Krieg.

I just want to point out how the Japanese fans are not that nit-picky or annoying at all compared to some American fans. (Except for the Nami chest perverts.) I've seen so many American fans complaining about Arlong, Shanks, Roger, Sanji, Mihawk, Usopp, Buggy, and more. I like how the Japanese fans are just taking their views and finding only the positives because they understand how hard it is to make a live action.

I do like how the cast is actually diverse and that it doesn't seem forced I do hope they don't go completely overboard with it, but I am curious how they'll handle future characters like Robin, Franky, Vivi-... Also, here's hoping Chopper CGI isn't trash.

I love Nami's casting. The extreme features are a bit much in live action, imo. I can't wait to see who they cast as Nico Robin and how they handle Chopper!

The Nami criticism just because of the chest is silly. If anyone watched early days of One Piece Nami was flat as a brick. Personally IDC what her chest look like, it's her acting that I care about. lookwise she looks fine. The hair is bit odd in some shots but looks fine in some others, conflicted on hair but whatever I like Emily a lot.

At first, I didn't understand why Netflix was investing so much into this, but now I understand: Netflix isn't that big in Japan, so if there's anything that can boost Japanese subscribers, it's a One Piece live action! I hope the japanese audience alone can carry the series to make sure it doesn't get canceled, we need at the very very least 5 seasons to adapt One Piece somewhat acceptably, 7 would be ideal I think, it can't be much more than that, because Emily Rudd is already 30 :(

It took me a minute to latch onto Nami's actress as really portraying the character but she really does fit. She looks the most adult and serious, which is true to her character as she has the darkest burden and is playing multiple sides. She really really shined during the Arlong Park entrance. If anything maybe she doesn't try to emulate the gigantic smiles characters give when they laugh, and maybe doesn't hold her eyes open enough to match the general deadstare energy of most characters in the show lol but overall I think she fits really well.

Every time I look at the trailer I think "Hopefully this is good and we can get more seasons" then I remember if we get more seasons they have to make Chopper, Logias, Zoans, and characters with paramecia devil fruits weirder than Luffy's (ie Robin, Mr 2 Bon clay, Mr 1 and Mrs Doublefinger). I hope the show is successful but boy do I not envy them if they decide to make more seasons

People complaining about Faye Valentine had a bit more validity because she is literally a Femme Fatale. In the source material she used her body to distract men and there is a reason she wears a skimpy outfit to show off her big chest. The Netflix version not only completely missed that but they purposely avoided the characters core principles and made her a modern day feminist lesbian. I mean nothing wrong with any of those things but that isn't Faye Valentine. Now people complaining about Nami are being unfair because her big chest doesn't really define her in the One Piece Manga. I would argue her prickly personality and athletic ability is her core trait. So people complaining about the actor when she's perfect for all the traits that matter all because her chest isn't big enough - yeah that's dumb.

Danielle Pineda looked plenty like Faye. The reason they don't think she looked like Faye is because they got her personality wrong. Faye in the live action show is too wild and crazy. Faye in the anime was a lot more laid back when someone wasn't pissing her off and had more class even when she was doing trashy stuff like eating Ein's food.

As a hispanic nerd I've been super disappointed by our representation lately (looking at you Namor and your shame shorts) but man Inaki is such a breath of fresh air. He's so excited, enthusiastic and just different from the archetypes we're usually allowed to be on screen. Plus he's not just a character he's THE character. He's not gonna be the usual brown character whos arc is learning how to behave or fit in to another culture. Luffy does what he wants when he wants and you can take him or leave him. ¡Yo me convertiré en el Rey de los Piratas!

I think people’s concern with Nami doesn’t make any sense. At the beginning of the series, Nami was drawn in a much more modest way. Overtime her character was given more curves in a significantly bigger chest. I think the actress they picked works perfectly as Nami especially early on. And honestly, the proportions of modern one piece characters would be almost impossible to match. As a sidenote, I would implore some people to look into the actress that plays Nami. I’ve seen her dressed up and she looks quite a lot like Nami when she dresses up. If the series continues on, she could easily look more like modern Nami. I think the casting choices for all of these characters was perfect. They picked people that look close enough to the characters. But they knew that it was more important to get actors that embodied the characters personalities. Many of the characters look different from the anime, but they don’t feel different and I think that’s important.

I feel like to choose the actors, they really used the internet for it. Like they took all fan castings into account, fanart, and even probably AI. Because that’s exactly what the crew would look like if they were real. Ussop is incredibly accurate (minus the nose but that’s a given in live actions) zoro and sanji are also perfect, and Iñaki as Luffy is perfection to me, because not only does he have to match in looks but also in vibe and personality, it’s incredibly important for him to also match the same energy because he’s the MC. Nami is probably the one that looks more "fake" but just because I think they could have gotten away with a different shade of ginger hair for her, I feel like her hair feels too bright, a more copper probably would have looked better imo. The CGI does not look uncanny and the attacks are surprisingly well made. Oda’s style is too wacky for live action, but I think they did an incredible job at keeping the "essence" the same. It obviously cannot be an exact replica, but the feeling is there and that’s the most important part, so hyped for this, maybe I can entice more people to be interested in One Piece before Oda sensei gives us an ending, want wait ❤ Ps: the only thing that bothers me is that gyojin like Arlong and his crew aren’t artificially enlarged on CGI, like to actually feel fear from their big presence, could have achieved that with easy stage tricks/camera tricks or cgi. Kobi is perfect too

The casting is fantastic. I am genuinely impressed how much effort went into this, and even the show doesn't succeed by not getting a second season, I'm glad they tried and I'm looking forward to the result.

If someone tried to intentionally act the way Luffy does exactly like the manga I feel it don’t matter who’s acting it’s gonna seem not genuine. So I think it’s good they are changing some things.

I'm so with the Japanese fans, I actually didn't like when people specially the American complaining about the cast, I felt so displaced by their thoughts, all of them is fire and I liked it.

This let me know that it’s just habit and trendy to hate on these live actions in America. This is amazing looking.

The show itself really surpasses the trailer, at a glance some of the casting looks physically “off” (Sanji too thick, Arlong not thick enough) but once they start acting on wcreen all the actors have so much charisma and really capture the essence of their anime counterparts. It was a monumental task and ai think they did about as good as anyone could hope for:

Putting the weird comments about Nami's body and age aside, I am a little concerned that Nami is going to be portrayed as a very dry and sarcastic person most of the time. And she can be those things sometimes, but it's also important that she can act cute and charming and I'm not quite getting that from this trailer yet

I really liked that they tried to stick to what oda once said about what each characters nationality would be. Zoro being Japanese was mentioned. But Luffy being Brazilian is another. Okay so the actor is Mexican, but the appearance and accent is close enough. Ussop is African, Nami is swedish and sanji is french. Though I admit I couldn't really place the accent they were trying to do for sanji. Sounded like a Brooklyn x German thing. Point is, if Japan had done the whole thing, they'd have all been Japanese and it wouldn't have felt right.

If I had to rate the acting for each character: Number 1: GARP. Vincent Regan not only looks exactly like I would imagine Garp in real life, but he behaves in the role so perfectly that he made the character traits of anime Garp reasonable. The excellent writing of this Series is no doubt supporting this image, of a wise, extremely strategic but still manaical Garp whose impulsiveness comes over as extremely scary but also funny. Number 2: Helmeppo (Axe-Hand Morgan's Son) I absolutely forgot this character existed because in the anime he is just a douché that gets properly pummeled by the strawhat crew. He does actually go through quite a cool character arc and becomes Koby's friend. This is so much more memorable in the real life adaption, and his mimics and gestics are perfectly captured by Aidan Scott. So far I have only ever seen Jim Carrey pull off mimicry that made me think I was watching a cartoon. Number 3: Usopp In the anime, I started liking- well rather tolerating the constantly lying and timid Usopp only when he landed a good shot on an actual objectively important target in the Robin rescue arc. The real life adaption does something clever here, by turning the compulsive liar into an otherwise likeable hype-bro that rather than act stingy and dismissive about others, fully embraces the pirate trope of obviously exaggerated adventurers and grandeur. As a honorable mention, Sham. They changed the character quite a bit, from a human wood-carving looking dude to a combat-ready cat maid. In particular the scene in which she walks while drawing her blade, and the reflection flies over her cat-like grinning face, had so much cartoon villain energy in it that I want to mention it. I'm hyped for more episodes!

2:56 I don't know why people would feel that she's not a good fit for Nami because of this. In East Blue Nami's chest wasn't nearly as big as it is now.

The casting makes perfect sense because it was based on Oda's answer in an SBS I think. If they continue the trend, Nico Robin will be played by a Russian or at least an actress of Slavic descent.

5:28 I didn't even think of that watching the trailer. I didn't even notice the diversity of the cast. I was living in the moment seeing all these characters.

Kinda proud that back when they first announced the cast I was like: these people really fit, especially Usopp, am cautiously optimistic. And holy crap am I so happy with how well it turned out despite the overwhelming odds, this feels like a love letter to fans while still being accessible to new viewers, which is one hell of an achievement for anything with a legacy like One Piece. So many good decisions, they knew what to keep and what to change and knew better than to do 1:1 portrayals while still keeping the spirit and heart of One Piece and the characters. It was always the values of the characters and their principles, friendships and how they faced things that happened in the story that moved people so much to make OP the cultural phenomenon it is, and that's what they were faithful to. I totally approve the changes they did make. Am really grateful they actually show people dying outside tragic past flashbacks, that was a longstanding peeve I had with the original where no one (with that one very special exception) ever dies in the main story, even minor characters that by right should not have survived. I like that they showed Zoro really killing people and Kuro actually murdering Merry, it gives stakes and sets the tone for things to be taken seriously. Am for no shipping within the crew, but I like that they actually acknowledge romance by having Kaya and Usopp kiss, always felt so unnatural how Oda chose to have absolutely 0 romantic portrayals in OP. I love how they expanded on Coby and Kaya's characters, how Coby's earnest but naive perspective was used as a way to introduce people into the greater workings and morality of the world. At the same time I absolutely adore how they totally embraced the ridiculous character designs from the original. They didn't shy away from it, they lean into it and show how this is the world they live in and it's awesome. Buggy's crew really set the tone for that in the beginning. I love Garp's dog cap, the Black Cat Pirates costumes, that curly collar on Kuro and Sham's hair and eyeliner were perfect touches. Even Mihawk. He looks like a cosplayer, albeit a good one, but he just sells it because the rest of the world is that cartoony and his acting and the shots are just cool.

It’s funny how it’s the polar opposite for Japanese as they are giving praise, meanwhile westerners just use mega billion dollar budget films as references to shit on this live action, or things that absolutely don’t make sense like being an exact copy, if you wanted an exact copy then just watch the anime and be happy, you don’t have to go out of your way to shit on something that’s not bothering you

I'm on the boat of it better that the live action is translating the source material than replicating it. We already have the manga & anime doing that....the live action should be doing it's own thing but still maintain the heart & soul of the original. As long as the main stoy beats are present i actual don't care how they get there.

I applaud Netflix for making sure the Manga-ka had approval for any changes, and for resisting the urge to use "We Are!" until the moment the crew is all together on the Going Merry. That was the RIGHT place to play the instrumental version for the first time, as it is literally the moment they were "on the cruise."

I Binged the whole season yesterday. They did so good on this adaptation.

I wish they would have stuck to NAMI betrayal a little closer. How she tricked Luffy and gave luffy to buggy. I really wanted to see her burn herself when grabbing the wick from the cannon. I think that scene is extremely important. Shows that she isnt a bad person. Also wanted to see buggy balls destroying the city.

Compared to most live actions, this did justice to the manga and anime for the most part

One Piece isn't politically correct on purpose - it's just an extremely diverse world with a compassionate protagonist! A perfectly positioned story for the modern age.

We all can agree that netflix completely nailed the actors and portraits of the characters thats what great casting looks like everyone is so passionate and natural also i am so happy how open the fans in japan alot more then western ones that try to cancel everything thats slightly offensive its like tekken where they take stereotypes and make a respectful, playful and honest set of characters.

Tbh, all the old character here are 100% or better. Garp are more serious than animanga. Zeff full on Gorgon Ramsey and there quite a bond with garp. Bellemere story also still touching but i think the execution of her dying moment can be improved. The kids actor also quite talented, especially kid sanji and nami. Mihawk is more talkative and more rizz than in the animanga but lil bit less intimidating and powerfull. Kuro arc here are become like horror movie. He look less scary but more creepy and flamboyant, but had richer character than in the animanga

People forget how Nami actually was in the first seasons.

This is a proof that Netflix can respect the source material and not use a work as political propaganda, as long as there is enough money and the author is demanding enough to not allow people to mess their work up

the set pieces, art direction, and costume design are all really really well done. Whoever the show runner was did an amazing job hiring the right ppl, they captured the environments and the vibes of the anime in a really cool way. Once again The costumes and set pieces are seriously very well done, I expected this to suck really bad like most of the other Netflix abominations

I like the fact that they got actors from different countries since only Zoro is technically Japanese especially Luffy being Brazilian and Usopp being South African.

My complaint with the costumes is that they look freshly made and fitted. Not like they're torn and worn. Luffy wears the same clothes for months, and they look freshly dry-cleaned. Zoro doesn't look like a prisoner with fresh clean clothes. Sanji, Nami, and Usopp are forgiveable. Sanji keeps himself clean, a likely trait of him being a chef. Nami changes clothes often or new disguises. Usopp isn't shown in the trailer wearing the same outfit. The one outfit that does look worn andbeat up, is when we see him sitting next to Luffy for a second, and when their ship is being attacked.

I thought Sanji looks a bit too mature for the East Blue saga Sanji, especially when the rest of the crew look so youthful. Btw I really like Buggy's voice in "chop chop cannon"

I read the manga and after I saw all the episodes, I must say that they did a 'perfect' job for it, The casts delivered how the characters are perfectly believable. I mean, I DO belive that they are them in the manga. This is one of the best manga adaptations. Can't wait to see the next season.

Honestly just knowing oda was a decisive factor in casting dispelled the worry that it would be soulless. Hearing a showrunner refer to him as 'Oda Sensei' was a vote of confidence. Regardless of how it turns out, i think it's a well-meaning adaptation that really does want to honor the source. I also really like how the diverse casting is done with full attention to oda's representations of the characters, and not to impose social values.

I think what's so interesting about these reactions, are that they are so much like the fan reactions we see in the united states and other parts of the world. It makes me feel like. Even though we may not speak the same langauge. So much of our thoughts and feelings about the adapation are the same. It gives me a sense of togethernesa with other fans. And admiration for Oda, only he can create characters with such a special charm, that it can bring people around the world together like this.

I wasnt sure what to expect from the Japanese fans but they definitely have the right approach to things and they have some pretty good arguments

zoro was completely wrong with his personality. They made him too depressed and emo, he isnt like that at the start of one piece.

Initially, I actually found Zoro to be the most disappointing casting because I felt that the actor's face was too soft and cute. However, when I saw him in costume, I thought he looked amazing. I was also concerned about Nami's anatomy, but after seeing her in character, I had the same feelings as I had with Mackenyu- she looked perfect for the part! Still, the most satisfying cast member to me -and I am personally pleased with every, single one of them -is Usopp. I wouldn't have him any other way, and I'd never have known it if he didn't look so insanely awesome.

my favorite line is when Sanji mirrors luffy with his all the great fighters name their finishing moves and Zoro say yeah your gonna fit right in I"m sold!
