Japanese Candy Making Experience | Amezaiku ★ ONLY in JAPAN

Japanese candy artistry is a performing art with a history going back over a thousand years. Amezaiku was offered during the Heian period to wide eyed children (794-1185) and is still seen at festival stands when the Amezaiku master takes a blob of taffy sugar called mizuame and turns it into an animal or character. It's amazing to see it, like a clown make balloon animals at a kid's birthday party. Amezaiku masters have only 2-3 minutes to make the character before the warm candy hardens and it sets.
Today, we'll go to a shop that is preserving this traditional culture in Sendagi, Tokyo near Yanaka Ginza where old Tokyo still exists.
Akezaiku Yoshihara is a place where you can see hundreds of traditional Japanese candy and even request one to be made!
Also, I commissioned a candy bust of myself from the shop. It took a week and cost me $100. Watch to the end to see if it looks like me. What do you think?
Amezaiku these days costs between $3 for small and simple character animals to $10 for normal sized and up to $20 and $100 for very complicated pieces.
Is Amezaiku art -- or candy?
To Yoshihara-san, it's candy first and if you're hungry, just take a bite! Nothing lasts forever.
Where is Yoshihara san's shop?

I can see the resemblance between you and the candy bust. The whole detail of the candy looks super amazing, so does the other candies in the shop. You did a great job on your rabbit John, it didn't look bad at all. 💖💖

Great content John !To everyone who is interested in going to Tokyo , Yanaka Ginza is a must visit !the shopping street is small and but lots of interesting shops ,even beyond this street ,there are temples, historical cemetery and winding roads. It is very accessible too. You just ride the JR Yamanote line to Nippori station.

Looks just like you, so many fine details! And your attempt at making sugar art must have been fairly decent for a first try, I think it was fine... just maybe not fine enough to sell! Hi john! Long time viewer and lover of your videos, I especially love the videos on food. If you ever happen to see this, and are open to ideas, I would love to see something about Japanese cars! Racing, drifting, car manufacturing, or just history- if you’re interested in it, it’s something me and likely many others would love to see! Food documentaries are great (I love the one about sandwiches), but one-off documentation’s on other Japanese culture crazes are even better (like your video about man-hole covers, something I never imagined would interest me!) Keep up the amazing work as always, and thank you!
