I really like the fact that you also talked about the hiostory of Japan, the civil war and farmers in all of this. The movie "7 samurais" was first thing I thought of while watching this part. Great video, looking forward to seeing another one!

This is really interesting! Growing up, I always knew my Japan born Grandma despised brown rice--which I ate and preferred for its health benefits. In her eyes brown rice was literally for peasants! Great video, doomo!

First, my dude, you are hilarious, you and Mrs. Eats make a fine pair. Second, that porridge actually looks quite nice and yummy to my eyes. With some modern condiment mix, or even just salt, I bet it would be quite tasty!

Oh wow! that looks really good! I recently bought a 7 grain mix, but i never tried it by itself! I'll have to give that a go (maybe with a lil seasoning hahaha)! Its funny tho...that now a 5lbs bag the o the mix grain could cost double the amount of white rice now!! hahaha thank you for the awesome history and foodie video straight up eats!! :))

@loudradialem5233
@loudradialem5233 8 месяцев назад
In the 7 Samurais, the young Samurai ate the farmers' food to better understand them and complained how awful it tasted. It was translated as millet. I didn't know what it meant so I read the dictionary and it defined millet as corn and I was like "Corn is delicious! Why is he complaining?" But, yeah, this dish doesn't look like corn lol Still, I would try it.
@Luckingsworth
@Luckingsworth 5 месяцев назад
Millet is just a generic catch-all word. In the Americas it would have commonly been corn but any small grain is a millet. Anything "milled" is "millet" and milling is just a part of the process of producing food from grains. Either to grind the grain into a powdered flour, or to remove the exterior husk(s) which are generally considered inedible.

It looks like buckwheat which also doesnt taste too good without anything added. Pure its also just like slightly "caramelized rice" (with some sugar and cinnamon it tastes good)

I loved this dish. With lotsa yummy toppings and miso on the side, just as you said. I’m Chinese, this seems like a much healthier and quicker version of congee. My toppings: fish cake, salted duck egg, tofu, spicy radish, seaweed, braised greens, fermented tofu or natto. Not all at once though!

its understandable if the early centuries were yet to be developed and thought only shiny things were great etc , but today Japan and the world will no doubt recommend that this was and is one of the most healthiest food we humans should be eating on this planet when we still can.
