Fern friday! Or whenever you're watching this. The Japanese painted fern ( Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum' ) is a fairly easy to grow fern for zones 4 through 8. These ferns spread well through underground rhizomes and will fill out an area in the garden wonderfully. As far as easy to grow ferns are concerned, I would consider the painted fern to be moderately easy when grown as a perennial. I know growing Japanese painted ferns indoors isn't as simple due to their love of humidity. Overall with how to grow ferns and fern care this one should be easy if given low light outdoors and well drained, organically rich, consistently moist soil.

Suggestion: Jeff; in the Fall contact a tree trimming company & ask that they deliver/dump a (FREE) truck full of ground up trimmings & _spread it amongst your beds that need amending. By Spring your Ferns will Thrive in that compost.

I generally just dump hummus and compost started before I mulch in the fall but that would be much easier!

@@TropicalPlantParty I had that done. Make sure you specify which varieties of tree you do not want. You don't want something allopathic in your beds.

You finally did a video on a plant I already have, and I nailed all the "do not"s! Planning to amend where mine are before fall still...cause yeah, planted lots of stuff in a "clay pot".

Yay school! ... I'm a nerd, I loved school. Well, I loved college that is, as long the semesters weren't full of bs classes that had nothing to do with my major.

Ive had Autumn ferns before for years in zone 7b. They can get quite large and have beautiful bright new fronds that emerge in spring and through summer.

You captured its beautiful (as far as the painted fern look) towards the end of the video, just time and patience with your skills and yourself my friend. I think honestly it was beautiful from start to finish, but that’s just my humble opinion 🥰🥰🥰 Well done sir, and try to enjoy your weekend!!! Give all the fur and feathered babies some love 💕 ( Colby as well lol)

Just murdered a maidenhair fern (as per usual) after moving in a new apartment here in NYC. Always like a good Fern Friday video - if I can't have them in-person, I'll take them on-screen!

Well you can sneeze too close to a maidenhair and kill it! 🤣😂 they are such divas!

Less water more light, trim off any dead fiddles. Hope it helps. Also mist once a week if possible?

So I've never seen one or heard of one before... I'm a fern killer anyways so I don't see myself picking one up anytime soon. But it's definitely one of the cooler looking forwards... As always great video!

Hello! Nice to know there is another plant lover in St. Louis. Really enjoyed your video of Hillerman's Nursery, I lived in Washington and made the trek down Hwy. 100 many times, now I live in St. Lous too. I enjoy what you are doing. You kept talking about the weather and I thought, hmmmm, seems familiar, it seemed I had the same weather day as you, before I found out you live in St. Louis too..

Damn clay, we had the same soil in Ohio. Have you considered using your auger after you dig out the planting hole? You could break up much deeper and really work in some gypsum with minimal effort.
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 5 лет назад
I generally just score the sides and bottom with a hard rake and till in the gypsum. A tiller or auger would definitely work better!

Spores from ferns will grow...best in terrarium set up...closed type with lid...need constant humid not soggy...bright not hot light...patience 6 to 10 month wait...you could sprinkle spores in an established terrarium and forget about them....
