#FernFriday This week it's all about how to grow the Ostrich fern! Matteucia struthiopteris is a U.S and Canada native fern which grows anywhere from 1 to 5 feet tall. A lot of how how large they grow is relative to their climate. More mild climates with loamy soil and moderate to heavy precipitation will produce the taller ferns. This is in my opinion the best fern to grow in the landscape for people who want texture but not the fuss of typical ferns. Ostritch ferns are such an easy to grow fern because they are cold hardy, they are a fern for sun ( in more mild climates) and they grow quickly giving a strong impact to the garden. No matter the climate, once they send up their fertile fronds the plants start looking kind of shabby but it is worth it since they look so lush and vibrant for so many months prior. To fertilize these ferns I suggest amending the soil in mid spring with rich organic matter such as humus, worm casting, epsoma plant tone etc. ... anything that will enrich the soil. If it is desired to use a liquid fertilizer for ferns then be sure to dilute that fertilizer by 50% to avoid any root burn. The main reason the ostritch fern is my favorite fern is due to the amount of light they can take. As long as temperatures aren't scorching hot (+90F) then these are ferns for part to full sun. Of course they need lots of watering and well drained soil the more sun they get but their are not any other ferns for my area that grow well with much sun on them. Ideally the ferns need bright morning sun and filtered afternoon shade, but mine have been growing for several years in morning and afternoon sun and looking great!... until it gets really hot outside, then they start to get shabby. The light green foliage would pair wonderfully with a rainbow of impatiens, or to keep things more elegant in the garden, just some white impatiens. I think the Ostritch fern is the best fern for growing in more rough climates or gardens where other ferns fail.

I really love your ferns, because of where I live, I won't be growing any, I know that I could plant some fountain grass and pretend I have something that is like a fern even though it won't be, Lol! So lovely indeed, and I'm grateful you share your beautiful garden with us. Loved this video and your little bits of humor thrown in, gave me my giggle for the weekend. Thanks Jeff and have a great weekend and I will see you soon, bye for now.

Hi Jeff! I really like your Ostrich fern. I think it still looks pretty good, good enough to see what it would look like in all it's glory anyway. I'm always happy to see a new video of yours, no matter what you talk about. Where I grew up in Idaho we would go to the woods around us and Mom would dig up ferns and columbines to plant in our yard. They were really pretty. Thank you for sharing!

Hiiiiii! I have an ostrich fern planted in my yard. It's up against my house, kinda in a protected corner. It gets a little morning sun here in Louisiana, zone 9. That's right, I'm growing this in zone 9. Comes back beautifully every year and does well throughout the summer months.

That's awesome! I'm so glad you commented that you are successful at growing this in zone 9! I wondered a little about everyone and everything saying only hardy to zone 7 when their dormancy and cycle is mostly triggered by light and not as much by temperatures. Good to know, thank you!

I know it is hardiness zone 3-7, but how do you think it would do in 8b? I am in Myrtle Beach South Carolina and there are some at Lowe's for 7 bucks. I have a north facing wall that is much cooler than the normal humid hot weather. It is also very wet on that wall. I took the temps one time and it was 11 degrees cooler than the normal temperature. You think it would do well there?

I have European Ostrich Ferns in Rochester, NY that are nearly 6 feet tall and perfectly shaped! I want to put two in pots on either side of my front door (faces north). My porch does get full sun for about three hours 2-5 PM. Can these ferns tolerate 3-4 hours of full sun?

I really liked your narration and the great info. You mentioned native clay soil what state are you in? I'm in Florida a lot more sand, hope they do well. Thanks again-john
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 2 года назад
Hey Jon! I'm in St. Louis where the soil is a mix of clay in some areas and sand in the lower areas. My yard is mostly clay, but ive been amending it for years now and it's getting more loamy and rich. I'd think they'd do well in Florida, right? Warmth, humidity and rain should be go for them and that soil won't have any trouble draining.

the reason you eat them as fiddleheads, rather than a more mature frond is because they are tender (mature fronds are tough and stringy). Same goes for Asparagus, we eat the tender new shoots rather than the woody, more mature growths. One of my favorite ferns, along with Cinnamon Fern.
@TropicalPlantParty

Thinking about how many ferns grow naturally, often native to forests where they have a ton of rich dead plant matter and wood chips that they crave. So that to me means they would do well with a good mycorrhizae. So basically, treat them like that!
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 5 лет назад
Exactly!
@texadianstitcher

Fiddleheads come from ostrich ferns? I knew fiddleheads were ferns, but not the species. I've heard fiddleheads can only be grown in the northeast and far north in specific marshy areas. No idea if that's true, I just know fiddleheads are difficult (and expensive but totally worth the $18/lb) to find in stores in Texas. We generally find them between March & June at central market. I just wish the employees on the phone knew what they are and when shipments are expected - 3 months is a big window to look for oddball items. A phone list to know when extremely seasonal, hard to find foods are arriving soon would be wonderful. (Pardon the rant, we get frustrated looking for fiddleheads and spend way too much time going to central market in the spring looking lol.)
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 5 лет назад
What do they taste like? I'm very curious about that! I think fiddleheads can be taken from various varieties of ferns for cooking.
@texadianstitcher
@texadianstitcher 5 лет назад
@@TropicalPlantParty I can't explain the taste. Just "green". Kind of a crunchy texture like raw peas? unless you overcook them to mush. A lot of people boil them (about 5 min?), drain the (nasty brown looking) water, then put butter, salt & pepper on them. You need to cut off the tails because they're tough like asparagus ends. They are notorious for quick spoilage like asparagus which is probably another reason for the crazy price. So if you find them in a store, eat them within a day or 2. I cant say if back yard ones are safe to eat or not. I'd view it like a mushroom popping up in the yard, if you cant say for certain what it is, don't eat it.
