Recently, Princess Mako, the eldest daughter of the current Crown Prince of Japan, got married to her college sweetheart, Kei Komuro. If you’re wondering what the big deal is, Princess Mako had to give up her royal status to marry her commoner boyfriend according to the Imperial Household Law. So how do ordinary Japanese citizens feel about the news? Is this as big of a deal in Japan as it seems to be in the West? Our Asian Boss reporter hit the streets of Tokyo to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Japanese population.

10:08 Uh, do these people not realize Empress Emerita Michiko, the current Empress Masako, and Princess Kiko (Mako's mother) were all commoners who married into the royal family? And that there are 7 other living royal women who married out of the family? Princess Ayako only got married 3 years ago. Clearly people have the memory of goldfish. Princess Mako's case wasn't special at all until the public decided to hate on Komuro for his mother's actions and his hair. What a load of crap. Edit to clarify since this comment is blowing up: According to the Imperial Household Law of 1947 male royals can marry commoner women into the royal family, but female royals must give up their royal status if they marry a commoner. In addition, the Japanese aristocracy other than those directly related to Emperor Showa (Hirohito) lost their royal status after World War II, so there are no other royals to marry in Japan. In other words, royal women have no choice but to lose their royal status and marry a commoner or remain single. Or perhaps marry a non-Japanese royal but that is pretty unlikely.

>>Since 2017, when the engagement was first publicly announced, the couple faced disapproval from the Japanese public because they deemed Kei unfit for their princess due to his low social status. This is not the case. When the engagement was announced in 2017, the media and the public didn't criticize him, in fact they looked upon him favorably. It was only after his mother's money problems were reported by a weekly magazine that he started to be criticized. After that, various problems were reported and the criticism against him grew louder. It is normal for people in the imperial family to marry common people, and this is not seen as a problem. Added on November 16, 2021 The Japanese word "民間人(Minkanjin)" which is translated as "Commoner" by foreign media, means "private citizen. The word "Minkanjin" does not have a negative meaning.

I am Japanese. I don't know if I can translate it well because I can't speak English, but most of the Japanese who opposed the marriage of Kei Komuro and Makosama do not oppose it because Kei Komuro is a "commoner". (In this video, it is expressed as "commoner". However, modern Japanese do not use the word "commoner". In modern Japan, people who do not have a special occupation are referred to as "一般人(Ordinary people)". Therefore, it is correct to say that Kei Komuro is "一般人( Ordinary people )" and Makosama is "皇族( Imperial family )".) ( Commoners(=平民・庶民) sound rude in Japan, but aren't they rude in English😲? ) this is not the first time that a Japanese Imperial family has married an "一般人( Ordinary people )". Sayako Kuroda, the younger sister of the current emperor, was also married to a general man. In addition, Masakosama, the current empress, is also an "一般人"(ordinary person), and Kikosama, the wife of Fumihito Akishinomiya, the younger brother of the emperor, is also an "一般人(ordinary person)". In the first place, all Japanese people are "ordinary people" and the imperial family is special. Therefore, he was not opposed by the Japanese people because he was an "ordinary person". Most Japanese people respect and cherish the imperial family. I was suspicious of Kei Komuro's attitude, which he did not explain to many suspicions, even though he knew the feelings of the people. Of course, some Japanese are not against this marriage. Some Japanese are indifferent to this topic. Some say it's pitiful to oppose the marriage of two people in love. I personally do not oppose Makosama marriage. However, I would like you to know that the reason why this marriage has become an opposition mood in Japan is that there are various backgrounds and various suspicions about Kei Komuro and his family. I don't like the information in Japan being transmitted in a biased manner. I think Asianboss's activity itself is wonderful. Asia is wide. There are various ways of thinking, and the perception may change depending on the country. I find it difficult to tell things in a completely flat state. However, I would be very happy if you could convey information to people in all countries with compassion.🌼

What Japanese people are afraid of is that Japanese taxpayers' money is going to be spent on her to keep her living standard. Kei Komuro is obviously not for a lawyer. He fails to reasonably refute the allegation he and his mother face, and on the contrary distrust of him is spreading among people . A lot of people doubt he is able to succeed. In Newyork, everything is expensive, but their income isn't enough for living a wealthy life she lived for 30 years. Can she endure it ? Isn't it likely that she plays on her royal family's heartstrings for money? If it happens the government has no choice but to give her money. There is no justice.

As a Japanese, I feel this problem very complicated. Before some problems about Kei Komuro were discovered, many Japanese people blessed and welcomed their marriage. But then, his mother's financial problems and the process by which they made all the decisions forcibly for marriage were the reasons for the harder criticism. And now they have been criticized for spending large amounts of tax privately. And it was also because Princess Mako criticized the citizens at the briefing session for the citizens. Of course it is not hair issue 😂 It is believed that his personality cannot protect Princess Mako. On the other hand, many people support and worry about her. The media broadcasts radically. Kind of left out of this story is that because so much of the Japanese aristocracy was wiped out in WW2, there are pretty much no possible non-commoner matches for the princesses. The peerage except the core royal family were abolished, so she pretty much is only allowed to marry a cousin if she wanted to stay a princess and there are none for her to marry. edit: Note this was done intentionally by the American occupational force to prevent the imperial family being used to re-establish fascist/nationalist control in Japan. Like for eg when some northern people speak urdu, its sounds very calm and beautiful, but an everyday delhi-ite may sound louder and harsher. The language itself is very beautiful no doubt. I have a similar view about korean, it just doesn't sound good to me, very strange and most words seem weird to me when pronounced. Doesn't mean the language is bad, just the tone I hear in k-pop ain't doin it for me

The old man in the video has said 'royal families are one that everyone should strive to be'. I think that is a big one, even entertainers in my country(Korea) was under lot of pressure when they were accused of debt of their parents. They might not have responsibility in the law, but they have to choose either doing the 'right' thing(returning money on behalf of the debt, the logic behind this was they got benefit since some of that money were used to their education) or being cancelled. I feel very sad that the Japanese people who oppose this marriage are misunderstood. Due to the following facts that English news does not report, we Japanese learned of Kei's repeated lies. Because of that, we objected him to become a relative of our Imperial Family (the symbol of Japan; existing by the trust, respect, and taxes from people): When this money problem between Kei's mother and her ex-fiance was discovered (2017), Kei was asked by Akishino (Mako's father), which he replied "I didn't know about this at all." However, Kei himself joined the meeting about this money problem with his mother and her ex-fiance, then recorded the conversation (2012). Kei, who was ordered to explain to the public by Akishino, created "Komuro Document" by quoting only a part of the recorded data and published it (April 2021). He turned the ex-fiance into a liar, claimed it was not a debt but a gift. Immediately after that, the ex-fiance submitted all the recorded data, then we found out that Kei was a liar. Only four days after Komuro Document was released, Kei changed his attitude and announced his intention to pay the settlement fee. However, after that, though the ex-fiance proposed a discussion for the settlement fee, Kei kept refusing it and ignoring him. Six months after the announcement of the intention of the settlement fee, Kei forced the marriage without solving anything (October 2021). At the press conference immediately after the marriage (October 26, 2021), Kei said, "Occasionally, my mother and I have expressed to her ex-fiance our gratitude." "I received a positive response from him regarding the negotiations." However, the ex-fiance later announced "There is no such fact in either case." After getting married, Kei finally met him just before he went to the United States and "agreed to pay a settlement fee" (November 2021), but the source of the money is not disclosed. In addition, Mako announced at the press conference after marriage that "I let Kei do that to his mother's ex-fiance since 2017." Also, Kei got a job at a high-end bank in Tokyo (although he quit it soon), entered a national graduate school, studied abroad in New York with a grant (Only one student can get the scholarship at Fordham University, but Kei didn't pass the bar exam though many of his classmates passed), and lived in New York for years. These unfair and costly lifestyle was helped by Akishino (through his friends). On the other hand, the ex-fiance ran out of money due to Kei's studying abroad at UCLA (2012) and the numerous luxurious demands by Kei's mother, he became unable to pay his mortgage and sold his house and car. He is now still working for a living in his 70s. About Kei's mother, she commits Survivor's pension fraud and Sickness/Injury benefits fraud. But the police doesn't investigate her though they arrest other people for the same crimes. These unfairness and abuse of power by the Imperial Family violate the Constitution of Japan. We Japanese have lost a great deal of trust and respect for our Imperial Family in the last few years. We feel hopeless the Imperial line will be moved to the Akishino family after the current Emperor retires.

@@joseph3036 yes I believe every country has their own prejudice against people based on their looks. Only a couple hundred years ago men in most countries and cultures had long hair. It's just so very ridiculous to make out a persons character by taking a single thing of their appearance, but alas people like to put others into categories.

I think the truth about what might happen lies in the middle. Some wants to see the old elitism brought down -commoner and a princess sounds like a fairy tale. On the other hand , the princess a normal person , can also make mistake when reality hits about day to day living, with someone of a different background - the end of honeymoon period etc. Like any couple, comes down to how much they are willing to commit and make it work. Obviously the fame made the beginning step harder.

"I've heard that he failed the bar exam" Okay, so what?! The good news is that you can take the New York bar exam an unlimited amount of times if you do not pass. New York does not place a limit or a restriction on the number of times you may attempt to pass the bar exam. Weirdly folks in the United States are forgiving unlike folks "elsewhere"...😂

yeah failing exams in many East Asian countries are like a final decision on your intelligence. some due to the culture, but also due to the cut throat competition. It's like in Olympics if you are a runner then 0.1 second makes a huge difference.

As far as I'm aware, rules against royals/nobles marrying commoners were almost universally put in place because if it happened, it would significantly reduce the legitimacy of the family and therefore threaten their position as royals/nobility. Since that is far less of a concern nowadays, I'd argue that that rule is outdated, even though I'd still argue that it should be encouraged that the royal family still not marry commoners since, even now, if every single person in the family is married to some random person in the street, they would lose a significant amount of legitimacy.

The interviewer seemed to read too much into what backrush she will have to face if she forced the real reason why their marriage was such a problem for Japanese society. It's that Kei Komuro's mother is embroiled in scandalous after another with financial dealings before he even grew up. His mother is thought to have cheated Japanese tax law in inheritance of her husband's (gloom's dad) suicide and her father's in law's suicide just 3 days earlier and whence she was able to send her son to a prestigious schools including Int'l Christian University which would have cost arm and legs for a single mother. Also She was with so called fiance for quite sometimes and borrowed (gift according to her) $400.000 (4mil yen) to pay for his schooling. And just in the recent years it became know she was falsifying her health status to receive governmental medical supplemental assistance. The amount may not be as much as some currupt politicians but you're talking of Japanese imperial household here. They live on tax payers money so it's imperative they'd be without any gossips whatsoever. Or it wouldn't be a big deal as this wasn't the first time imperial princess marries out to a commoner. Empress mother and current empress were commoners for god's sake.
