On July 18, 2020, the famous Japanese actor Haruma Miura was found dead in his home. Although investigations are still under way and nothing has been confirmed yet, the police found a suicide note that has lead them to suspect his death as a suicide. His death sent shock waves through Japan, where around 20,000 people were reported to have taken their own lives in 2019. So how do the people of Japan feel about this particular incident and the issue of mental health in general? We hit the streets of Japan to find out.
Mental health and online harassment are serious issues, and nobody should have to live in fear of getting help. If you or anyone you know are even in the slightest way contemplating suicide, we encourage you to seek help ► en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

When they talked about how they don't talk about their mental health and problems it reminded me of a very old video. This American guy went to Japan and he worked or just went to an English Cafe. It was for Japanese to practice their English. He said that the hardest part was that many Japanese would share their deepest struggles and problems to him. That many would go there to have someone to talk to, not specifically to practice their English. Because Japanese knew that Americans are more open about talking about those things. The guy had a good heart because he was concerned that he couldn't help them because he is not a therapist. I don't remember the blogger, and the video is probably more than 10 years old. But things haven't changed in 10 yrs. I am sad that my fav Japanese actor and celebrity crush suffered a lot.

At least if I can work on improving myself, eventually, I can position myself somehow in the future to help others when I become stronger in whatever way I think I can be. These are very lonely times for many ppl so my positive plans keep me going. Ppl set up negative plans for themselves because they feel so trapped. Write. Journal. Blog. Clear the mind and keep learning.

People in the internet said mean thing and bully others online because they only brave enough to say those mean things online and hide themselves behind the phone or computer afterwards. They don't care, they're indifferent, and they basically forgot everything about respect and manners which they learn as a child from their parents and teachers. People only reveal their true face on internet cause they know they don't have to deal with consequences of the effect of bullying they cause to others . He superbly portrayed the 15 years old teenager, dealing with adult' s ignorance and hypocisy: wanting a boy to act like a man but denied every opportunity to be one, was told to study and lambasted for not dealing with hardships. He became a good actor, rared one who can portrayed strong internal feelings without excessiveness physical reactions. Haruma Miura did not commit suicide! Because his management company announced there was no suicide note a month after he died. In Japan, if there was no suicide note, it would be treated as a suspicious death, and the mass media reported it as if there was a suicide note, but in the end it turned out to be a lie. And even though there was no suicide note, no autopsy was performed, and it was reported that he committed suicide 50 minutes after his death. His death is mysterious and his fans are working to request a reinvestigation to protect his honor and dignity. #Justice for Miura Haruma

It depends on the criticism. If it's the constructive kind, one which asks you to reflect on your actions or words, then you will have to take responsibility to be better. But if it's the hateful kind of criticism--an insulting one, especially--then that's the only type that you must ignore.

@@amapiria true. problem is though, sometimes it's hard to tell if it's constructive or judgemental. everyone had a different perspective. that's why the most important step we must take FIRSTLY, is to KNOW ourselves and be HONEST with ourslves. the truth is what liberates us and brings inner peace and the right kind of confidence. beliefs are what take us to the path of conflict.

@@Elwen-xs7gr knowing yourself really is like looking in the mirror, it's that easy to do. but if you're not used to it, or if you're afraid of what you may find, it may feel impossible. all I can say is that what you will find is beautiful in it's own way, doesn't matter how strange it seems at first, important thing is that when you are THAT, you finally feel like you're back in your own skin, and it's the most wonderful, fulfilling, inner-peace bringing feeling. (you probably felt like that sometimes in your life, you might've just not identified that with being you) when you are/stay in that spot, there will be a solution and a way for every problem. when you operate at your real level, life becomes... feasible, doable, nothing that seems too hard to do, because your motivation is ultimate. (it's usually outside opinions that dissuade us from being us, that's why it's important to be honest with oneself, that way, your confidence in yourself won't be shaken by anyone.) just remember that only you can understand you, because only you had the exact life path of you, so you are/have literally the solution to all your problems. That's why I say, outside opinion is only relevant to an extent (many times not at all) to you. It's important because then you have something to relate to, so you don't feel alone, floating in space, but you will do that for some time, until you find people that vibe with you 😊 make no mistake, the people in your life NOW, vibe with how you are NOW. when you become yourself, there's always gonna be loss. it is what it is. we have to learn to walk our path. it's ours to walk, and where we may go, some will not follow. so expect to lose friends maybe even family members. but you have to make a choice: you have this life, don't worry whether there's another before, another after.. you are here now. this is your life. do you live it for yourself or for others? 😊 answers will come when you expect them least, don't worry if you don't understand something right away. and remember, for every space in your life that becomes vacant, life finds a way to fill it again😉

Well, I would argue that this is rather circumstantial. If my best friend critized me for certain things I might have said or done wrong, I would of course listen and try to take 'respsonsibility' and think twice about doing the same thing in the future, for instance. If it's a stranger on the internet, it's an entirely different situation -- but again, that also depends on the context and on the behaviour of each party.

Whatever happens, it's important to remember that our lives matter. I think the film 'It's A Wonderful Life' taught me this lesson better than anything else. We may think ourselves to be worthless and insignificant, however we don't really know what impact our lives have on others and what it would be like if we weren't here. It is excruciatingly painful to hear of these lethal decisions people make. We should all look carefully around us to see the beauty of this world and this life and take pleasure in small joys such as a walk with a friend, a day out in the nature... We should appreciate small pleasures and our lives in general. Let us all take care of ourselves, people close to us and those who we encounter.

man, i swear asian mentalities are the most toxic to one's self. i say this because as a chinese-american, i was raised in a very "rational" household. i suffered from depression in my early teens lasting until just recently. the idea of talking to others about their problems are often looked with disregard or belittling. the only thing we get from sharing our problems is shame. i remember the first time i tried to share my problems, my older brother immediately said "why are you sad though? you live in a house, you have a loving family. there's absolutely no reason for you to feel this way." almost as if i've offended him by saying i was depressed. so i'm not surprised when a few people from the video said they felt like they were bothering others if they ever had the chance to share their emotions. japan is only nice at face value, but underneath, they're just like any other human being.

Your brother's telling you that, probably because he wants you to feel grateful. Be cautious, when you're sad. Your mind becomes really pessimistic it kills every happiness you could ever grasped.

I can feel you... i used to share my problems with my family but 99% of their answers don't help comforting me and make me more depressed until i closed my heart completely from my family and my friends because no one understand my feelings... i'm struggling in this war alone and i hope i can be strong until the end.
@ZilLonO

What your brother said is honest and true. It's exactly why we always suggest people to talk to others when they're depressed. It opens your mind and widen your eyes. You may not like what you hear but that's what you need to learn, ie. that's a lotta version of the world, only you can decide which one you live in. He was just reminding you to focus on what you have already and not what you want to have. People can say tons of things to comfort you, but that's for the ears only, it means nothing. You feel good in this moment, nice, but what about tomorrow? next week? next month? Comforting doesn't help you get out of depression. Honest opinion does. I don't know what's the issue that's troubling you. NO ONE can help you but yourself. Get up, pin point the issue, get a solution. Every problem has a solution. Solution means nothing if you don't act. I spent 20+ years change my life. I failed, fell back in the hole, many times, got back up, then tried again. It still suck in a way, but I'm in a much better place than before, and I'm proud of myself coz I did this all by myself. Like in the video, 10 people has 10 different life. Don't expect others to understand you, no matter how good they're as a listener, how compassionate they are, they can empathize, but they don't feel or understand your struggles. And most of all, it has nothing to do with your family is Asian or not. They don't say something you like to hear, so they're evil? Your brother's opinion is truly gold. You owe him a thank you actually.

This spoke volume! ✊🏻👍🏻 It's either "you should be thankful for having a roof on your head and 3 meals to eat" or " it's just a phase, you'll get over it" or " What didn't we give you for you to feel like this?" I don't understand how others could belittle others' emotions so simply. ☹️ I wish people would understand that it's not that we're not grateful or we're greedy or we're going thru a phase. I hope they'd understand that we're not always in control of what we feel. And it's almost inevitable to stop whatever it is you're feeling once it hits you. Praying that God keep us all safe, from this virus, and from our own bad thoughts.

@exolnctzen6159 4 года назад
What they don't realize by saying "you should be grateful" is that we really truly are grateful even to the point of thinking ourselves to be undeserving of everything. We feel like we are even wasting the little air we are breathing. Depression makes us feel like trash on the surface of the earth. A failure, burdening even God with our very meaningless existence. Thats how dark it is but the horrible part is that no one understands.

It's the way you speak about it that shows how far Japan has to go. If you can't feel empathy and think "I feel terrible when someone does that to me, so I will not do that to anyone else" you will never ever sort this Your comment shows what a stretch it is for Japanese people to put them selves in others shoes. Thank you very much for covering this news: I’ve been a fan of Miura Haruma since my teenage years, as we are practically the same age it felt like I watch him grew through his series/movies and always find his work to be of comfort, he had such a honest and warm smile. I’ve also struggled with depression/anxiety so the fact that he committed suicide felt even more personal and upsetting for me. If anyone reading this is struggling with mental health issues please, please there’s help out there you just have to reach out and I promise it will get better, you are never alone. Rest in peace, Miura Haruma you’ll be dearly missed.

I feel like people are missing the most essential point. Taemin constantly said about Jonghyun that he couldn't be truly himself. One or two of the people here said the same about Miyura. I keep hearing people go 'omg he was so nice. ' and I realize you mean well I get where you're coming from but for one do only 'nice and good natured polite' people have the right to live? What about the ones who suffer from mental disorders and lash out and get angry and do impulsive things like random sex and drugs? No human is completely nice or polite or free from vice. Idolizing people causes celebrities to be forced in certain categories. And one more thing, what happened to innocent until proven guilty? I stopped watching Higashide ever since I heard even though usually I separate the artist from their work. This time because he was in one Crows franchise movie with Miyura I felt it more personally. But when Miyura supported him its not that I believe H is innocent, I just believe Miyura wasn't lying. Sometimes people especially friends and lovers only show us one side and because we're close we believe them. Maybe it was just that. We don't know, like I said innocent until proven guilty. Think about this the next time you label someone nice.

i completely agree with what you said about fan culture in the asian entertainment industry and how it inevitably forces idols to fit into a labelled category to act a certain way in favour of the fans and public impression. i personally believe more than half, if not more, idols/celebs in the industry are the totally different from what they are portraying on media and what the fans are swooning over, but that is what makes them human and indifferent to the rest of us and totally deserving of a place in this world.

When I asked why she/he said he/she just wanted to finish education and work for a year then take his/her own life. Never in my life did I know someone who talks so casually when talking about taking their lives, so I was stunned. I tried talking and persuading him/her but he/she said that's what he/she really wants. As a Asian myself, suicide is really common nowadays and I always take it very seriously. I still cant accept the fact that I will never see him in person. I was his fan since I was 12. His smile always fascinates me. It’s just so sad. I wish that we knew each other and that I was able to help him.

This was a hard pill to swallow. I started watching his new drama and it said “in the memory of” and when I googled it, I couldn’t believe it. He was one of the first japanese actors I truly loved watching. I will miss him, he was too good for this world.

It's so sad, really. Miura is such a talented and sweet person. But this is how life is, unfair. Rest in peace, Miura-san, thank you for everything you have given us until now.
