Naniwaya used to have a eat-in café inside of the shop and you could order green tea with Taiyaki. I used to enjoy sitting inside eating taiyaki with green tea. Azabu-juban used to have the very good steak restaurant but that's been gone around 20 years ago. I miss Azabu-juban back in those days.

internationally ME Good to know that they still have the café inside. Thanks for the update. I am Japanese born and raised in downtown Tokyo but now I live in North America. My parents used to take me to Azabu-juban many times since I was a little kid, since the late 70's. My high school was just up the hill after the end of Azabujiban main mall! So nostalgic to watch the scenery in your video.

I'm so glad the Japanese have latched on to Custard. It's one of my favourite things in Australia, so getting a familiar flavour but in Japanese things (eg. taiyaki and mochi) makes it an enjoyable experience. I love red bean paste too, but cuuuuuuuuussstaaaaaaard.
@internationallyME
@internationallyME 8 лет назад
Haha custard is so good right! It's definitely getting more popular in Japan and is normally an option when you go to the sweet shops. What kind of custard things do they sell in Australia?? Can't think of anything at the top of my mind.. I also thought custard was a Japanese thing :S
@TheShadowChesireCat
@TheShadowChesireCat 8 лет назад
Custard is actually an English thing. They invented it (the French call it Créme Anglaise, which translates to English Cream), and the world kinda loves it (kinda like how Japan took English curry and now it's huge). Normally in Australia it's just runny custard. It's usually for going with things, like fruit or puddings (so good with Christmas puddings!). But the Japanese have kind of made it thicker, but still custard tasting. I think the world should take notes from thick Japanese custard and use it in cakes. If it's good in taiyaki, imagine the custard piped between layers of sponge cake. Yuuuuuuuuum.
@internationallyME
@internationallyME 8 лет назад
Wow, interesting!! Thank you for the insightful comment. I love how each country adjusts the texture to fit their own tastes. Ahhh Christmas puddings!! Ofcourse, I grew up in NZ so we often eat that too. Maybe next time I should try baking a cake and put Japanese custard inside.

Thanks for showing which shops to get great Japanese snacks. One recommendation is to describe what you are tasting and eating. So that way, we would know how it would taste like and if it's worth going there whenever I travel to Tokyo.Commenting how good it is - is not enough. I don't know how these treats taste like. So always put some adjectives like the imawagami - custard filling japanese cake - smooth, creamy, slightly sweet custard filling with a pancake that has crispy edges, and it is soft and warm on the center. So yummy!

yes! Arrive in Oct 31 to Nov 20. I go to visit tokyo (and let me know about any good halloween party :p), kusatsu, nagano, Nokogiri mount, Kyoto, Hiroshima Sapporo and maybe Okinawa (yes... I saw all of your videos ahaha). PD: two chilean gifts if you take me to a party (or ramen haha)

Everything looked so delicious. I especially would like to try the taiyaki and also the Hokkaido milk bread. I love red bean paste, so any treats that have that would be delicious for me.
