Japan had a strong navy but their tanks we're lagging way behind because they didn't really need them and when the did need them, it was already too late.

Perfect tank if it was the WW1. Good tank considering when it was first developed. But why no improvements? Japan had very wrong idea of using tanks. They never learned from failures they experienced from Russia. Even though they already experienced their tank guns obsolete from Russian warfare long time ago, their tank tactics until the end of WW2 never changed. Light tanks with low-caliber AT guns are only for AT missions. Medium tanks with higher caliber howitzers are only for infantry support missions. Why not develop AT gun versions of the larger caliber guns, and mount them on medium tanks they already had? Many people have misunderstandings. One is that Japan did not feel needs for developing better tanks because they fought on water. Can't be more wrong considering their failures on previous wars on Asian mainland. They absolutely need better vehicles for land operations, and they did recognize the needs. They just couldn't convince their stupid generals with the idea. The other misunderstanding is that their lack of technology lead them to poor tanks. True, but even with the poor technology, they could have built much better tanks. The only reason for their poor tanks is their wrong understanding on concept of tanks. Even small countries with no technology like Finland built effective tanks using destroyed enemy tank hulls and their own howitzers. Japan just didn't try to build new concept of tanks because they believed in obsolete WW1 tank ideas. Same problem occurs in infantry tactics and aero tactics. Wrong, old idea believed for long period of time leading a group into death. This is overall problem of the WW2 Japanese military. And that is why a stubborn military dictatorship makes a country ill. Japanese people are not dumb. They knew they were wrong. But their strict society did not allow people's flexible thoughts to change the country's strategy.

九五式やチハ車の弱装甲を「ブリキの棺桶」と揶揄した文献等を見ると腹立たしいですね。当時の兵士には九五や九七が最高の兵器であり、その戦車で勇戦敢闘し散華されました。深く感謝しています。
