You have to remember what the Ha-Go tanks were for. The Japanese weren't marching across a continent. They were island hopping. They needed a light tank that would be easily shipped by sea rather then a heavy tank like a Panzer 4/5 that can simply be driven across a continent. They need a tank that can drive over sand and easily go through jungles. We saw that in Iwo Jima and Okinawa when American tanks were getting bogged down in the sand and getting picked off by even the lightly armed Ha-Go that could go over the mud jungle and sand. The Ha-go was no match for Shermans and Pattons in armor and fire-power. They were even less of a match for a Russian T34.

Stupid design for sure.

The Japanese Ha-Go is crud, in Khalkhin Gol. The BT-5 was such a superior tank, it was faster, had better armor, The driving distance on it is also absurd, The gun was far stronger, it was only a few tons more heavy which is funny. The only way the Russians lost was because they had poor communication and they got ambushed and yet still severely damage Japanese morale.
@firepower7017
@firepower7017 5 лет назад
Also the losses was a bit equal. And one more thing, the BT-5 could carry a squad. So it was perfect for Japan, but why didn't they take it?
@Squidsha
@Squidsha 4 года назад
@@firepower7017 Because Japan captured hundreds of BT-5, BT-7, and BA-10 and considered them inferior. Japan won every minor engagement with I-Go, Ha-Go, and Chi-Ha until they had to offensively push through large open fields (Khalkhin Gol). War, especially in Asia, is not fought with only tanks vs tanks and Japanese field guns would become significantly better than the Soviets. I-Go through Chi-Ha had rolled steel which could withstand Chinese and Soviet guns up to 30mm, and later addon armor for Chi-Ha resisted up to 45mm.
@firepower7017
@firepower7017 4 года назад
@@Squidsha The Japanese abandoned field guns due to the BT-5 and insisted in giving Molotovs to infantry to light the engine on fire as the BT-5 was heavily prone to fire. Also the Chi-Ha had rivets and was made cheap. I doubt it can withstand the BT-5 45mm gun. If such was the case. The Germans did it wrong with the superior Panzer III.

Theres a Chi-Nu in Thailand that still runs and another Ha Go or two as well. One was in Russia, another was I think a very good reproduction model (i think that one was in Japan?) And possibly a 3rd in Thailand. (Thailand got a bunch of japanese tanks in WWII)
