Lyrics:
We'll take the copper from the work site
Meet me here at midnight
They ain't got a camera or a guard
Write my own prescription
If I can't get a fix, son
shit's about to get real hard
Molly don't believe me
Says she's gonna leave me
The kids won't even know my name
Put a gallon in the stepside
With a little help
by morning I won't feel no pain
Never thought I'd wind up
this far behind
Just a couple years back we had it made
I was emptying my bladder
on a 20-foot ladder
Should have climbed down and found myself some shade
The doctor took a quick look
I got out the checkbook
and left with a pocket full of pills
Now my back's still hurting
and I'm too weak for working
and I can't keep up with all the bills
She used to wake me up with coffee every morning
and I'd hear her homemade house shoes slide across the floor
She used to make me feel like the King of Oklahoma
but nothing makes me feel like much of nothing anymore
I was all set up to do it
but some bastard beat me to it
Ain't a copper pipe left on the lot
Got a loan out on the truck
but I'm running out of luck
and the title is the only thing I've got
Molly's gonna leave me
Says she don't believe me
I got nothing left to lie about
She's going back to Bixby
Tired of trying to fix me
Says I got some shit to figure out
She used to wake me up with coffee every morning
and I'd hear her homemade house shoes slide across the floor
She used to make me feel like the King of Oklahoma
but nothing makes me feel like much of nothing anymore
She used to wake me up with coffee every morning
I'd act like I was sleeping til she walked back through the door
She used to make me feel like the King of Oklahoma
but nothing makes me feel like much of nothing anymore

I got that help and I am fighting like hell to conquer my bad habits, show her the man she needs me to be, and keep my little family together. I’m just going to say it. I think this might be his top 3 songs yet. I’ve loved it since the album dropped and I’ve had it on repeat for months but I’m not tired of it yet. I think in a decade we will treat this album like southeastern and this song will stand the test of time I think
@eylandaviation5561

The first time I listened to the album (the day it came out) my initial response was that it was pretty good, but no Southeastern. Having seen Jason and the 400 Unit perform it a few weeks ago, and having picked up new lyrics each time I listen to the album, it's definitely elevating itself each time I listen.

Once again, Jason Isbell tells the story of the struggles and agony caused by addiction without judgment. His experiences create his lyrics, and I applaud him for his brutal honesty and poetic spin on the pain and suffering that happens with addiction. The loss of self, of loved ones. HUGE, HUGE, applause for addressing the subject often ignored- domestic violence. I work in this field, and highlighting the NDV Hotline and the Substance Abuse Hotline after the credits sent chills through me. Once again, he created awareness around difficult topics no one wants to touch or discuss. He is bold and brave! Like I needed more reasons to respect him!

I just wish the video was as good as the story writing in the lyrics. The video narratively misses the mark imo. It's just guy takes pills...guy hits wife (is it even his wife or is it girlfriend)...woman has enough and leaves...its really generic compared to the song.
@TheDarkSkorpion
@TheDarkSkorpion 2 месяца назад
I wouldn't say domestic abuse is ignored. I also wouldn't say that's what this song is about- although it's depicted in the video, the lyrics don't even hint at it. He does have a way with words, describing things in a way that even people in the situation would struggle to. Like in his song, Anxiety. Or Elephant. Or If We Were Vampires.

I’m 62. Been rocking since my dad brought exile on main street home in June, 1972. 50+ years later I am amazed by today’s songwriters and their bands. I believe Jason is definitely one of the best along with his old band mate Patterson Hood, the Avett Brithers, The Lumineers, Hozier, The National, Ray Wylie Hubbard, James McMurtrey, Nathaniel Ratliff, Florence Welch, Jim James, Lord Huron, Marcus. Mumford to name just a few including Willie. His new album is awesome! And speaking of The Stones, while Hackney is not Exile, it’s damn good, relevant and a testament to their enduring legacy. 6 decades at the top! Yes- there is a lot of garbage in mainstream music. Whatever! There is so much great music available through modern technology that I am not bothered in the least by the garbage unless a kid rolls into the gas pump with it blaring. No worries- I just crank my tunes up, pump my gas and live and let live!

@@utsurobune3530 serious question though, is it because of his music or his politics? 98% of people that I know that have heard about him say they don’t like his music but say cover me up “by” Morgan wallen is a great song.

The song already killed with the story line, guitars, hell, everything. But the video really hits the desperation of life going in the wrong direction. Just damn…
