Jason is after his first Irish red stag. He has stalked many Scottish red stags and many Irish sika stags, but this is the real red Irish deal. He is in the west of the country, at the height of the rut, guided by a friend, Daniel. Then he is back to Wexford to walk-up pheasants over his mate Stephen's pointer. And, if you have ever wondered how Jason makes his shooting films, he has a special offer for his secret weapon, the Shotkam.

Why shoot deer?
Deer in the UK and Ireland are at their highest level for 1,000 years. Numbers in the UK have doubled since 1999, according to the Deer Initiative, the UK government’s deer agency.
Deer are an attractive and an important part of our wildlife. However, they have no natural predator in the UK so numbers must be sensibly and strategically managed to keep them in balance with their habitat and to prevent damage to crops, trees, woodland flora, gardens and other wildlife.
Deer cause £4.5 million-worth (Forestry Commission Scotland) of damage to plantations and other commercial woodlands in Scotland. Crop damage is estimated at £4.3m a year according to DEFRA, with the greatest damage on cereal crops in east and south-west England.
More than 8,000 hectares (Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology) of woodland with SSI status is currently in ‘unfavourable’ or ‘recovering’ condition due to deer impacts such as browsing and fraying. Deer can also influence the variety of wildlife in woodlands and other habitats by altering structural and plant species diversity. According to the University of East Anglia’s Dr Paul Dolman, that has resulted in a 50% decline in woodland bird numbers where deer are present, impacting particularly on nightingales, blackcaps, chiffchaffs and warblers.
Deer are susceptible to Bovine TB and may be responsible for the transmission of TB to cattle. They are also the likely driver behind the UK’s increasing tick population (Scharlemann et al 2008).
Happily, venison is a delicious meat. It is wild, natural and free range, and - almost fat-free - it is one of the healthiest meats available today. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that there are real health benefits to eating game. Venison is high in protein, low in saturated fatty acids and contains higher levels of iron than any other red meat.
We’re proud to promote enjoyment of fieldsports and the countryside. There are three guiding principles to everything we do on Fieldsports Channel:
▶ Shoot responsibly
▶ Respect the quarry
▶ Ensure a humane, clean and quick kill

Excellent show Jason! Great to see traditional Irish rough shooting. You really showed the beauty of Irish sport, all hunting made possible by the generosity of the landowners and the respect shown by the gun clubs, we're blessed to have such a tradition alive and well. Accessible game shooting for all and not just those who can afford it. I would love to see a section in the episodes dedicated to how different gun clubs around the country are operating. That stag is one that you wont forget, keep up the good work!

Well Jason another superb video, few people can get across the true felling of a stalk like you did on this video. The walked up shooting for me is the best way to enjoy a day out big bags do nothing for me, however the benefits are plain to see for well organised driven days. Looking forward to your next video.

Well the pheasant and pigeon were much easier to carry than the Stag. That was a great stalk and that feeling when your Stag was down, just like when we take a White Tail Buck over here in Canada. I find there's always a little sadness too in taking such a fine animal, but knowing that this is food for the table soon changes all that and the knowledge that the animal was taken ethically and with respect makes all the difference. Thanks for the great video Jason, take an Irish Pony with you next time, make the pulling easier .

Great video Jason. Been there have the injuries quad is your friend with the red's and a quad with a winch aswell. Nothing worse than not being able to get close enough with the quad and having to drag a couple hundred yards and it takes 4 hours and your striped to the waste and ready for hospital and the works only began. Got a monster in sligo one morning 30 yards from the forest road and by the time we got it to the trailer there was a winch on order lol. Great hunt!!

Nice Stag Jason. I was always taught not to chamber a round with the rifle pointing skywards?
@jasondoyle6061
@jasondoyle6061 4 года назад
pricketfella one it’s a point than comes up quite often. My preference is for pointed into the ground but I know lots who are happy with a safe direction. A mixture of circumstance and awkward body position caused me to chamber skyward in this piece and I did cringe when I watched it back. Just shows the small mistakes we can make when the blood is up.

Great episode as always Jason. This is my first season deer stalking and my permission is very small but there are a few reds on it. I’ve drawn a blank so far but I was expecting as much. @jasondoyle6061

@jasondoyle6061 4 года назад
It’s like choosing a car Jim. Depends on what you want it to do and your budget. So many good rifles out there now. I’m really enjoying using the Savage and they are great value. You’ve got Bergara, Tikka and Remington in the same price bracket and all great guns. If you want something fancier it’s hard to beat sako for me although I do love the blasers too. There are other great rifles that I don’t have personal experience of but a good RFD will keep you right. Where are you based?
@Jim-ic4js
@Jim-ic4js 4 года назад
@@jasondoyle6061 I'm based in Newcastle mate. I have a tikka which is great but it's right handed and I'm left. I only bought it because it was cheap to see if I enjoyed stalking. Now its all I want to do haha. I've been looking at the sakos to be honest but not sure on calibre. I want to get out and do more stalking as have only stalked on roe so needs to be an all round calibre. Someone told me the. 270 would be fine for everything then someone says 6.5 creedmoor. To be honest it has got my head battered. Plus I would always use factory loads. Any advice would be much appreciated
@jasondoyle6061
@jasondoyle6061 4 года назад
.270 is my favorites caliber for most of my hunts. It works extremely well and I would prefer it for all but the smaller deer species.
