BCS. Pairs teams of comparable quality. In a title game. With everything on the line. 2014: Alabama vs. Florida St. Rose: Ohio St. vs. Oregon 2015: Alabama vs. Clemson Rose: Michigan St. vs. Stanford 2016: Alabama vs. Clemson Fiesta: W. Michigan vs. Washington Rose: Penn St. vs. USC 2017: Georgia vs, Clemson Sugar: Alabama vs. Oklahoma 2018: Alabama vs. Clemson Sugar: Oklahoma vs. Georgia Orange: Notre Dame vs. Ohio St. Those pairings are better .

@@ashtonbriscoe8522 Is Bama's SOS good because of the same reason it is good every year? Bama has a good SOS only because they play 8 or 9 SEC games and the PERCEPTION is that the SEC is the best conference every year. Newsflash: The SEC is not that great and the winner of the SEC will always make the playoff while the Big Ten champ has been left out for the last 3 seasons. Say anything you want. You won't change my mind. Strength of schedule is not an exact science in any way whatsoever. There are many ways to calculate it and no one way is any more or less correct than another. See... Ohio State played TCU which was thought to be a tough out of conference game away from home. The Buckeyes played a 2-0 TCU team that had its best player/QB healthy and playing. They didn't play against a 6-6 TCU team (that was TCU's record at the end of the regular season) that lost Shawn Robinson and then lost many games they may not have lost without him. Strength of schedule should matter but since it can't be correctly calculated, how much do you put into SOS and which way do you calculate it? Going back to my Buckeyes because I am a Buckeye homer, Ohio State didn't play a Purdue team that finished 6-6 in their regular season. They were playing a Purdue team that lost its first 3 games of the season. Then they won 3 in a row before Ohio State visited and got blown out. Purdue was obviously playing their best football of the entire season when that game was played. Nothing was ever said about that part of that game but surely that should have something to do with SOS that makes that not such an easy game where the upset is much more possible. There simply is no clear way to make SOS work in the ultimate role of things. You mentioned Clemson but I think that we all knew that Notre Dame was the one team that had no chance in that playoff that just happened. Why? BECAUSE OF THE EYE TEST they are supposed to use but clearly didn't. I don't think the playoff works and I don't think that it helps college football either. I love the playoff but you can't get the correct 4 teams into the format by having a dozen people pick the teams. Having 12,000 people pick the 4 teams would be smarter than just 12 people locked in a room to decide the fate of the teams that do or don't get in. Sorry for the novel. This will probably be my last writing on this season. I had to make it count the best I could.

Alabama senior class 2015-2018: 55-4 record. 2-2 against Clemson, 2 National Titles. 53-2 against the rest of the country. Clemson senior class 2015-2018. 55-4 Record. 2-2 against Alabama, 2 National Titles. 53-2 against the rest of the country. These 2 teams are tied for the most wins in history between senior classes, and broke even with each other, and split all 4 championships. It has nothing to do with whatever system chooses the finish. Clemson and Alabama have decided it. You are witnessing the 2 greatest senior classes in history, and they happened to coincide, and collide, all 4 years. You couldn’t write it and make it believable. A million stars had to line up, and they did. Just enjoy it. The system didn’t decide anything, those 2 teams did.

JD Allen true, they did have a semifinal matchup, but the winner of the game won it all. They split all 4 championships, just 3 games were for the actual title. I should’ve added that in, but it was definitely those 2 teams for 4 years.
@Keepdapocket
@Keepdapocket 5 лет назад
It's not flawed.. What he wrote is correct. Head to Head in a playoff scenario was his narrative. The four year span was his narrative. Championship is part of the playoff road. That's where they have met. They are 2- versus each other. Sure, Clemson can hold a right stating they hold an advantage in championship games, but Bama can also hold a right saying they also stopped Clemson from getting to a championship game and a possible 3rd championship. These two are on equal plain at this time. Any coach says, once you're in the playoffs, it's a championship game because if you lose in the playoffs, the season is over. Period. One goes on, the other goes on.
@JDA89
@JDA89 5 лет назад

@Keepdapocket
@Keepdapocket 5 лет назад
What you call "rationalizing" I call comprehension. The post (key word is POST) was about TWO teams being the top, with statistical facts to corroborate WHY those two teams are the best. It's basic common sense. If two programs have the same record, same amount of national titles, even record head to head in that four year span, tree context of the post is to show the two programs as equals. IF the post were to say "this year this team was better" then your argument would have validity. But, as it stands, it doesn't because you're attempting to change the narrative of the post. Go yearly, you can say which team is better. Going over a span, you can't determine that when EVERYTHING down the board is equal. Come on man. Common sense.

Any system that eliminates 98% of teams from title contention before the first snap is played is a joke of a system. The "Playoff" is nothing more than glorified exhibition games where the committee will find an excuse to put in the biggest named teams. A few years ago they left out TCU/Baylor in favor of Ohio State, claiming that "well those teams didn't play a conference title game, which is the most important factor in our decision". Over the next few years they included Ohio State, Alabama and Notre Dame despite them not playing in a conference title game.

The “other” bowl games have really suffered in this system. I use to sit from December 21-January 1st vegging out on Bowl games. (Sneaking a few at work lol) This year I didn’t watch my own school bowl game because most of the guys were “getting ready for the draft” . We were kind of warned this would happen... but we didn’t listen.

One of the problems with college football I think is the length of the game. The football playoffs are only there to make sure the best two teams are selected. In the BCS era you use to question if the best two team were playing for the championship. No one could say that Alabama and Clemson were not the best two teams this year. That being said the football playoffs were a success. The committee doesnt really care about the 3rd or 4th place team and hopes they are just a stepping stone for the 1st and 2nd place team.

The BCS wasn't as bad as people made it seem. Its only major flaw was that it was only selecting two teams for the natty instead of selecting more. The BCS selecting 4 teams right now is wayyyy more efficient and non biased than a bunch of former coaches and current AD's deciding on teams they are from or teams in the same conference as their school. Thats like applying for a job against someone who's friends and cousins are doing the hiring. They can claim to be non biased and objective all they want but unless you are the clear cut better candidate (Alabama/Clemson) then you're probably gonna get cut (Ohio State/Georgia).

I always laugh to myself when someone says the regular season in college football has a lot of meaning. Yeah, maybe for about ten teams that have a chance at the national title. But for most teams, once you lose one, maybe two games, there's really no point in watching any more of their games because they have no chance of being the national champion, thus their games are meaningless. Once the college team I cheer for loses one game my interest dies and I find something else to do. Why waste my time rooting for a team that has no chance to give me the thrill of watching them win a national championship?

The arguments here are all over the place lol. The easiest solution to all of this would be making any team in the CFB playoff have to win their conference, get rid of divisions in conferences and have them play a round robin format with the two teams with the best conference record playing for the conference championship. How do we pay the players? Pay them at the same rate as school professors who have the same tenure PLUS enable them to make as much money as they want from their likeness and sign pre-contracts with agents. This would let the best players make what they're worth, with better players get more sponsorships as they should. Last argument, that Whitlock makes a lot, that things were better in the past....... I would only say, in general things were rarely better in the past, you were just younger, and the world more often than not is better from a younger persons eyes

I like where you're heading with that but how many teams get into the playoff? There's 10 FBS conferences plus 6 indie schools. If they force the Indies to join conferences and Notre Dame is in the Big 10 where it belongs then we could have 12 teams in the playoff with the top 4 schools getting byes like in the NFL and then the other 8 going at it for the first weekend. Regular season wraps up in November and the championship is New Years day or whatever. The playoff games are still the major Bowls and the corporate folks still get their money and everybody is happy except Nick Saban lol. I like your idea about paying them too. Schools with more revenue get to pay players more which is a benefit of the players individual talent and ability to go to better schools.

@cacable7 Lol it's not a big deal, either only pay athletes during the season which cuts cost significantly. OR only give them their rights to make profit of their names without losing eligiblity and allow them to sign one sided pre-contracts with agents, that is agents cannot have performance based initiatives on the athletes and the ONLY benefits they would receive from the athletes is if they go pro and sign with such agents. It's not just the playoff system it's the ranking system. All year they made us think Bama was a pro team in college until they got abused by Clemson.. it's an easy fix..drop the ranking system and go to a pro style playoff.. make strength of schedule really matter again. Teams like Ohio State and Alabama have gotten an ez pass in the playoff era because they play weak schedules all year, finish with one loss and end up choking in the playoffs. If it wasn't all about money they could have this fixed over night.

In my opinion the playoff system downplays the uniqueness to college football. College football technically still does not have a regulated national championship, but now all media outlets agree upon the playoffs as the deciding factor. The playoffs did to college football exactly what they do to basically every sport. Everything that isn’t a championship is a bust year for the best teams. It doesn’t matter what games they win, it’s just championship or nothing. I can see an argument saying having a consensus national championship is more exciting. But the amateur nature of the sport really shines best when everything isn’t as formulaic and regulated.

Green Bay and Andy Reid and holmgreen and packer organization or Rooneys and cower and that classy owners ?? Winston is the most talented and needs accountably and Bruce will be great. Sam with Stafford and Rivers ?? When was the last time they were yelled at when they throw a pick?? Coaching is everything. Firstly, college football is not the second most popular sport in the country. Stand alone individual games always garner more viewerships and interests than a series of games. Secondly, if the argument is that the playoffs have ruined the bowls, that is a fact. I have absolutely no interest in watching non-playoff bowl games now. Although part of the reason is that there are too many bowl games, it’s also true that the Sugar Bowl, the Rose Bowl, the Orange Bowl, etc., aren’t the same anymore. I remember a time where I couldn’t wait to watch the Peach Bowl since it would usually involve two teams that just missed out on a BCS bowl.
