Good to know Michael ! Thank you i just got notified i passed my aptitude test today now its the waiting game, great videos waiting for the videos after bootcamp
Love the videos, have helped me through my process tremendously! Currently rank 22 for the Inside wireman and 18th for residential just waiting on a call from local 191.
This couldn't have been posted at a better time. Just finished my interview a day ago and now I'm sitting around constantly checking my email like a maniac lol.
@@SparkysJourney Dang your local is pretty quick! I was told that by the end of the week I should hear something.I think they are just trying to finish all the interviews first before sending out the email.
Thanks bro I guess my best bet is to pay for training that way I’ll have a better chance to get in after I apply. I will Be applying tomorrow and then will look for some type of training in this field.
Hey Michael! Maybe I’ll see ya out in the field one of these days. I’m also out of local 46. I’m currently sitting at number 7 on the list. Hopefully another boot camp starts soon and my rank will still be around that number when the time comes! Wishing you all the best! -Brandon
Hey bro I like your videos a lot they help me out a lot but I really wanna know do you needed to know anything about being an electrician to get into the IBEW
Great video thanks for the help. I just got my rank from 191 wondering if you know or if anyone else knows how big the class sizes typically are for boot camp
I got a my rank a few weeks ago but I don’t know how to check my rank during the waiting period. Is there a website or do I have to call every month to the local? I applied to local 191
Hi! Did you have any previous electrical experience? Some locals allow submission of a portfolio including cover letter, resume, and pictures of previous jobs/relevant hobbies. My point in commenting is did you do this to get such a high rank? I am pretty hands on and mechanically inclined but never held a job actually in construction or fixing electronics or small engines or appliances i just do those kind of things on the side for a quick buck if they come up. My interview was not my forté but i feel I could learn electrical quick due to taking STEM courses (think like an engineer) and have personal experience using hand and power tools. I feel like either A) I didn’t present myself well enough B) the competition really is that fierce
Hey! Thanks for commenting. No you do not need any experience. It definitely could help get you a higher score and lower rank but again, not necessary. I had no electrical experience. I did work a few months as a material handler. Essentially an apprentice’s apprentice. As long as you meet all the basic requirements and have a clear passion of the trade. You will get in. It might take time but you will get in. Did you do your interview already?
Also, yes I highly encourage anyone to submit a portfolio. Every local will accept them. Even if they say it’s not necessary you can still give them a portfolio. It won’t hurt.
@@SparkysJourney Material handler sounds like a golden ticket in from the research I've done because of the amount of exposure to the material, what its for, how to prepare it, etc as well as being a part of the union already, understanding how it works. Thanks for the reply by the way! Here in SoCal there really doesn't exist the opportunity to be one. I applied to Portland local 48 because Im open to moving, yes i interviewed and did badly to be honest, however I'm looking on learning and coming back to reapplying there and other places with new information and vigor to get in I do not take no for a final answer especially when it comes to a good and really interesting opportunity like this
@@JesusHernandez-lv4rx yeah any experience for any electrical contractor will be a plus. Call local 48 and try to get in as a material handler. After 6 months, reapply and you should get in pretty fast. As long as you show your dedication and commitment to the trade then you will get in. Good luck!
That is such a great question because I was confused at first too. The JATC or “National joint apprenticeship and training committee” Was created by the IBEW and NECA as a training center for new apprentices. The JATC is an arm of the IBEW and are essentially one in the same. Each local has there own JATC chapter and that’s where you will apply. You complete all your training and education through that JATC while simultaneously being a member with the IBEW.
@@mom9444 as an apprentice, you only need to apply with the jatc. That’s it. After you have been accepted you are in the IBEW and will start paying dues.
Hey, I’m applying for local 400 in NJ. I just received a follow up letter regarding my oral interview. It says I got a 77.16 out of 0-100 scoring. Is this a qualifying score? I didn’t get a rank or aptitude test score.
It’s really hard for me to say because every local is different. It really depends on how big or small your local is. If you’re in a bigger local then that’s probably not the best score. Could be better in a smaller local. It’s really hard for me to say. Good news is you’re done with the hard part and now it’s time to relax. I would email the JATC and ask what your rank is. Keep in mind some locals do not share the rank so be prepared for that. If a few months go by and you don’t get called then I would start gearing up to get experience as a Stockman/material handler. You can also get experience as an installer (06). Good luck with your journey and thanks for the comment!
Hey Michael! Just got ranked #90 after interviewing in the Seattle (well, Renton) chapter and feel pretty terrible about the interview. I have a very successful military background and have worked with a lot of different systems and tools and scored a 8 out of 9 on the aptitude test, and I still feel like I blew it. How did you find out your actual score and not just rank? I only got notified my rank and do not even know what the total pool is. I have heard rumors that ranking under 100 in bigger cities is not bad but I am not really confident about that. Do you possibly know how many people are getting picked up a month currently in Seattle and how many is on the list total? I know things are always changing but even just a guestimate would help. Love the videos and appreciate the help brother!
What’s up dude! Yeah so you should have got an email with your rank and score. Also, you have an online profile where you will be able to check your rank. In my experience, my score would change weekly. Sometimes it would stay the same for a couple weeks so it all depends on how frequently they are interviewing. My bootcamp was around 60 people split up into 4 groups I believe. There really is no formula. That was one of the most frustrating things for me. Not knowing when they were calling up people and how frequently they were doing it. I think they do one bootcamp a month right now because it’s busy but that might change if it slows down. It really depends on how many caps they’re are getting from their contractors who are requesting apprentices. It could be really busy but maybe all the contractors are set on apprentices so the JATC is t getting any calls. It really all depends but expect them to do interviews every week. That won’t change unless the stop accepting applications. I want from 35 all the way up to 150 back down to 1. Be patient and hang in there!
@@SparkysJourney Thanks for the support! I definitely only got a rank in the email but I guess I don't really need to know the score, rank is the important thing. I know I shouldn't check too often and get in my head but I already dropped to 91 in one day when I checked my online profile haha! But it is what it is, just got to stay positive and be patient. Thanks again man!
@@tomlang1005 exactly! A lot of guys/girls loose hope and give up after awhile And then they start to resent the union. Just be prepared and know it might take some time to get called up. OR it might go really fast! You never really know. Again it took me 1.5 years but I have a guy in my class that said it took over two years (closer to 3 actually). If you don’t go down after a couple months I would suggest getting some experience or taking some classes in the mean time. Get prepared to possibly do a second interview. Stay motivated and your time will come! Good luck and see you out there!
It’s hard to say. There are so many factors that go into it. Depends on the size of your local and how busy they are. To be completely honest 200 is a little high and it might take you awhile. I would get a job in the field (material handler/stockman) and re-interview in 6 months. Don’t get discouraged! Stick with it. Those 6 months will fly by and you will gain a lot of experience in the mean time! Good luck
Hey man in a reply to a comment you mentioned it taking you 1.5 years. is this 1.5 years after interviewing and placing 35 or is this 1.5 years from applying?
It took about 16 months total. That was from the time I applied to the time I was dispatched. There are three major steps. Step 1) apply step 2) aptitude test step 3) interview. It takes a couple months between each step. Now, I applied right before Covid shut the world down and the JATC Was shut down for a couple months. I would say on average, from everyone I’ve talked to, it’s right around a year to get in. If you’re lucky it will be earlier than that. You just never really know. It all depends on if your local is accepting applications, if your local is busy with work, etc.
thanks for the reply man, i just got my rank back yesterday after a kind of sloppy interview at 96. how long do you think it would take me to get in if you had to guess? i have a pretty decent job atm and i don’t think 6 months as a stockman would be worth it at this point
I interviewed yesterday, got an email today and I got ranked 6. I do have construction experience, but not in the actual pipe fitters field. (Which is what I’m trying to do.) Should I be worried about my rank going up soon? I read on the application brochure that they do interviews every quarter. So they will interview more people in December.
Wow! First off let me say that is a great rank! Food job. Usually I would tell you that yes, you do move up and down quite a bit. But your rank is so low and they only interview four times a year that might not happen too much. If I had to guess you should be called up in the next round. If they only interview every quarter then I wouldn’t worry too much. You might get bumped up a few spots but not much. My rank changed pretty much every week but that’s because they interviewed every week. Start at 35 and went all the way up to 150. Anything below 20 is a great rank at least at my local. Good luck
@@SparkysJourney how many people were in your class at local 45? I got number 14 last week and I’m pushed to 16 this week. Just wondering how many people are usually in a class.
It really depends on the local and how busy it is. They pull more in the summer than they do the winter. My class is around 60 people divided up into 4 groups.
@@4ngel209 could be a couple weeks.. could be a couple years. Hard to say. All depends on how busy your local is and if the contractors need new apprentices or not. My foreman sat at 2 for 2 years. That was in 08 when the economy was bad however. If I had to guess it shouldn’t take too long! Good luck
@@samanthaagnew22 don’t go off that number. They probably have thousands of applicants. 140 isn’t bad. It’s not great but definitely not bad. I ranked 35 at local 46 and got up all the way in the mid 100’s. It really depends on how big the bootcamps are and how busy the contractors are. Its the winter time so it might be a little slower. You never really know. Hang in their and good luck!
Wells Best score it's 93.22 and the worst it's 39.40 but they Say scores from 81.71- 39.40 are ranked between 201-1156 on the waiting list, so i'm probably like the 400 or something like that
