I've always thought of Javert as a tragic figure. Blinded by his relentless pursuit of the law, he can't understand empathy and self-sacrifice. Thank you for this perspective.
Excellent exposition on Javert. I have only been able to see 3 or 4 recorded versions of Les Miserables. Basically all movies, including the big budget Hollywood version. The Les Miserables musical seems more like Lee Cooncidences, because in the novel there was a tree worth of pages, whereas the musical takes on the important parts. Based more off the abridged version of the novel, hence the coincidences. I told people when I was preforming Les Miserables that Gavroche, Eponine were related to the Thenardiers, but they didn’t believe it for a second, because most of their information came from the 1985 musical, which cuts out the relations aspect. Eponine is not once like “Oh! My poor little brother has been shot!”
