Peter Benchley, who wrote the original novel, and, co-wrote the screenplay, expressed deep regret for the effect his novel, and, this movie had on the popular perception of sharks. He dedicated the rest of his life to advocating for the protection of ocean life.

As well he should. Glad to hear he realized the absolute carnage his movie caused. Not to humans but to sharks. Just horrible. Excellent movie, iconic and definitely spielbergian but just horrible for sharks.

That's wonderful to hear, I only knew it caused panic. But wow I love him for doing that, sharks really are wonderful creatures, but that doesn't mean I'm against horror films like this. Anyone with a brain cell can separate it and still admire them. major props to him

There are two sides to coin. At the end of the documentary In The Teeth of Jaws, Peter Benchley actually said he was thrilled that the long term effect of Jaws was getting lots of letters from young kids who wanted to be marine biologists, thought sharks were cool and were fascinated by sharks instead of being horrified by them. Here : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9MiVtavjD8w.htmlsi=y16f1Ztsf5aaGI8B Play the last two minutes. From Benchley himself. In his own words. Jaws lead to mass interest and far more scientific field research. This in turn is the reason we now understand and know so much more. Because of Jaws. Many of today's shark researchers were inspired by the Matt Hooper character in Jaws. Jaws gets unfairly overly blamed for the decimation of sharks. Its the Asian shark finning industry, commercial gill net and long line by-catch and the beach netting programmes that have taken the largest toll of sharks. Those have nothing to do with Jaws.
@lyndoncmp5751
@lyndoncmp5751 8 месяцев назад
@evanirvana500 Well the "carnage" is really due to the Asian shark finning industry, commercial gill net and long line by-catch and the beach netting programmes. They are the real big killers of sharks. People were wiping out sharks before Jaws. It's just that almost nobody was interested in sharks back then and and didnt care about sharks dying. There wasn't a green movement for sharks. Back in 1970 ( 5 years before Jaws) they had trouble finding great whites in South Australia to film the classic shark documentary Blue Water White Death. Legendary shark personality Valerie Taylor (she and her husband Ron filmed the live shark cage sequence for Jaws) was told by local fishermen that commercial by-catch and shark fishing was wiping them out. Off the east coast of Australia, the grey nurse shark was almost hunted to extinction in the 1950s and 1960s by spear fishing, simply because they looked like man eaters and were easy targets. Big game sport fishing for sharks was already popular in the 1940s and 1950s. The world record IGFA great white was caught in 1959. The character of Quint was part based on real life Long Island shark fisherman Frank Mundus. Benchley was directly inspired by the 4,500 pound 17.5 ft great white that Mundus caught off Montauk in 1964. Mundus used the harpoon and barrel method, as does Quint. In fact in the movie Quint mentions catching a 16 footer off Montauk, using 2 barrels. That's a nod to Mundus. So the carnage was happening before Jaws and would still have continued to get worse without Jaws. Cheers. ✌️

Quint breaks the radio because he is a shark hunter and this one is getting the better of him. It's become personal for him and he wants to get it on his own without help. The shark is his Moby Dick. Also, what he experienced during the war aboard the Indianapolis has most likely affected him. He doesn't admire and see sharks as something beautiful like Hooper. To him they are just something to be killed...at least the "problem" ones

I was at these areas where they filmed the following summer for a class field trip (end of the school year trip). It was filmed on Martha's Vineyard (island), off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts (Amity is a fictitious name). We rented bikes from the bicycle shop you can see in one of the shots, to tour the island. It is a really beautiful place, and it was very much like that vibe in the 70s. Great reaction, especially from a lover of sharks! This movie was quite the sensation when it came out - and ruined going to the beach for years afterward! All the effects were practical - there was no green screen, no computers, and no graphics. There were a couple of scenes (around the cage) where real sharks were used, but the rest was all Bruce, the chark. Bruce didn't actually work all that well, so Speilberg decided not to reveal the shark until late in the movie, which was a brilliant decision.
@skeletalk
@skeletalk 8 месяцев назад
Unbelievable for it's time! Not even any green screens really shocks me too. I knew it was majorly practical but not pretty much 100% 💙
@lyndoncmp5751
@lyndoncmp5751 8 месяцев назад
Well actually the shark was hidden by design for the first half of the movie. Bruce wasn't even scheduled to be used for any scenes until July 1974, for the Orca based scenes out at sea in deeper water. The beach attack scenes were all filmed in May and June 1974 in only waist deep water. Impossible to use such a huge mechanical contraption like Bruce in shallow water. It was out at sea during the Orca scenes where Bruce kept malfunctioning through July and August and only finally worked in September. That's when they got all the usable shots of Bruce.

Great reaction. A unique take. I chuckled when you were saying how beautiful the shark was...... only to cheer at the end when it was blown up. Ha!! 😁✌️ By the way so many younger new viewers to Jaws seem to appreciate the cinematography and the naturalness of the film making. I guess they are jaded by CGI, greenscreens etc. Everything in Jaws was filmed on location except for the night search looking for Ben Gardners boat, the mechanical shark attacking the cage, and the underwater shots of the swimmers legs etc. These were all done in a Hollywood tank and back lot pond. Everything else was filmed on Martha's Vineyard. And some live shark footage filmed at Dangerous Reef, South Australia. Oh and the opening titles where the shark passes through the seaweed etc was filmed off Catalina Island, California as it had better water clarity than Martha's Vineyard. Cheers ✌️

Hi Katie!😊 The film was shot locally here on the island of Martha's Vineyard (Amity Island) in the Boston area. The head popping out of the underwater boat was actually a big jump scare in the theater. There was popcorn flying everywhere. The male reporter on the beach is a cameo by the books author and screenplay writer Peter Benchley. The shark was actually meant to be seen earlier in the film but kept breaking down. People thought Spielberg did this on purpose to build up the suspense, for when the shark is eventually seen. The actual footage of real sharks is believed to be relatively small. Great reactions to the original Jaws, Katie!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

Ha, you WERE on Team Shark! 🤣You really are getting some major classics under your belt! This must be so fun! PS: I totally know what you mean about the grain of film, and definitely the grain of 70s films, I love love love that look. Add to that some really great, groundbreaking, exquisitely gifted cinematographers, directors, writers, actors.....make up artists, etc.....and a temporary period where artists were given lots of freedom (and money!) and a movie like "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" could be (temporarily) the highest grossing film of all time......until "Jaws" overtook it. THE SAME YEAR! Definitely an incredible period with many of the movies remaining timeless....while at the same time being completely of their time! This movie is a perfect example! Super 70s! And yet.....it's less different from movies now, 50 years later than it is from movies made just fifteen years earlier, in the late 50s/early 60s. Amazing. With the new freedoms allowed in film, horror movies got way more intense. This is a perfect example: the shark takes out a kid, and in a shocking (and cinematic!) way. Quint's death scene could NEVER have happened before the 70s!

The way I see it, the captain was a shark hunter to get revenge on sharps for killing the crew of the USS Indianapolis. He broke the radio so he could catch the shark by himself, without help. Did he have a Deathwish, tough question to answer. But to look into it further, you have to know the story of Captain Ahab and Moby Dick.

1. Jaws was the first "Summer Blockbuster". 2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their merit badge. It's an accomplishment all its own. 3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off. 4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. Works every time.🤣🤣 5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along, so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen. 6. The boy that said, "He made me do it' is now the Police Chief of the town where this movie was filmed. 7. Hooper was wrong. The fish that hit the line was "our fish". 8. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce. It was an ongoing trope within the filming due to budgetary problems. 9. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER. 10. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the Indianapolis story. It' personal. 11. I was in the Navy, and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting a shark. 12. Aside from Spielberg's pool used in the Ben Gardner boat scenes, all of the shipboard scenes were filmed entirely at sea, 13. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody. 14. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including the mayor's son. 15 The third one was so bad that Scheider read the script and said NO.

You're gonna need a bigger skeleton, Katie 😜 The Shark was animatronic (maybe not the right word, but practical made at least) & it broke from time to time while they were shooting. Yep, the shark was called Bruce after Spielberg's attourney & that's also the name and the reference of the shark in Finding Nemo 😉🙂 Spielberg had originally actor Lee Marvin in mind for Quint, but Marvin turned it down saying that he would rather go fishing instead 😜 Robert Shaw (Quint) got drunk from time to time on set, in one scene he was so drunk that you couldn't understand what he was saying, so he had to lay down, sober up & then do that scene. Him & Richard Dreyfuss (Hooper) didn't get along & Dreyfuss used that frustration in a few scenes on the boat. This is based on a book and according to a person that I know of who has read the book, it was more about the love triangle between the sheriff, his wife & Hooper than the shark itself.

The shark was an animatronic/puppet. I think there were three different ones depending on the perspective it was to be filmed (above, to the side, or partially out of water). The problem is that they didn't test it very well. The first time they put the shark in the water, it sank like a rock. It rarely worked at all, necessitating Spielberg to get creative. The use of POV shots or substitutes did the trick. Like when the shark rips off part of the dock. You don't see it. All you see is a chain and a bit of wood chasing the guy, but you know what it means. Same with the barrels. The audience knows what it means when they pop up. The music did the rest. There were maybe two or three shots of a real shark. It was because of these shots that Hooper was re-written to have survived. One of the shots shows the shark tearing up the cage, which we can see is empty. In reality, the shark had been passing by and got tangled up. It began to panic, thrashing around and wrecking the cage. It was as good a shot as they were going to get of a shark attacking a cage, so they rolled with it. There's another shot where the shark passes by the cage. That was a real 12 foot Great White. The cage was actually much smaller (as was the stand in for Richard Dreyfus), to make the shark appear to be massive.

The roar noise used when the shark dies is a callback to Speilberg using the same noise (it's a dinosaur roar from some old movie) in Duel, as a way of thanking Duel for helping him be seen as a moviemaker. Duel is his first movie. Before that, he'd only worked on tv show stuff. If you haven't seen it, I'd recommend it. A few things are a little dated, but it's still a great movie.

Hi Skele, it's great you've seen this iconic classic :) it's one of the GOAT movies and it started the phenomenon of the summer blockbuster. The mechanical shark would constantly break down, so Steven Spielberg had the ingenious idea of shooting the attacks from the shark's pov, which added to the suspense. Please continue with the franchise and react to the other 3 movies; Jaws 2 (1978), Jaws 3 (1983) & Jaws The Revenge (1987) they're worth checking out.

I love spiders, but that doesn't stop me enjoying Arachnophobia. That story Hooper told to the Mayor about one shark attacking 5 people in a week in 1916 though did actually happen. When they killed the shark (a Great White) they found it had 15 pounds of undigested human remains in it's stomach. That was the inspiration for the novel upon which this film is based. And the blood you saw when Hooper was in the cage was the shark's blood, as he was stabbing its nose. Hooper wasn't bit. As for the colour of 1970s films, that was the film stock (Eastman Color Negative 100T 5254/7254) and the fact that, back then, there was little colour grading. Nowadays filmmakers insist on tinting the film and usually end up making it look flat and lifeless. I share your love for the pure aesthetic of film.

Yeah people really can't separate film and real life. I'd love a Jaws where the shark is an absolute terrifying monster, wouldn't change how much I love them cause I know it's a film 😂 Yeah, idk what it is about the colour filtering nowadays with a lot of films it just looks all the same, uninspiring and lifeless-not everything luckily

Little bit of trivia for you... The license plate they take from the Tiger shark also appears in the movie Deep Blue Sea as well. In the book, Hooper has an affair with Ellen Brody but doesn't in the movie. ""I love the beach so much. I'm happiest by the sea." Well, that ends today. I have never read the book, but I'm told that it shows the mayor's stubbornness about closing the beach was partly due to the fact that he owed money to the Mob, and they didn't want the beaches closed. Seriously, I've enjoyed what I've seen in your reactions, so far. Some films I'd recommend are the supernatural action/comedy 'Big Trouble In Little China,' the grim monster cult classic, 'Pumpkinhead,' and the original 'Pet Sematary.' I'm interested most in monster movies the most, and one of my favorites is the 1979 eco-horror 'The Prophecy.' Many people write it off because of he concept, but 'Christine' is one of Steven King's books that were turned into a very good movie. Look forward to seeing more from you.

Hi Katie loved your reaction to this brilliant film, I saw this back in the mid 80's when I was in my teens and have loved the film ever since and like you love sharks as well very fascinating creatures, and yes it still holds up even all these years later its mostly practical effects apart from a few shots of a real shark shot during the cage scene, in fact the real shark got stuck on top of the cage and thrashed about and wrecked the cage so much Spielberg was keen to put it in the film, and the real shark footage was shot by husband and wife team Ron and Valerie Taylor of the coast of South Australia at a place called dangerous island, Also talking of learning to tie knots When I was in the fire service I had to learn how to tie over a hundred different seafaring knots I was told it was because the UK fire service was based on the Royal Navy but not been able to find a link, anyway the biggest crime in this reaction was not showing Quints speech about surviving the attack on the USS Indianapolis, and the news reporter on the beach was Peter Benchley the author of the book, and if you are looking for other shark films to watch, the films 47 Meters Down and The Shallows are both worth watching in my humble opinion, and I can't believe I'm still not following you on your other socials will have to sort that out ASAP.

Yes, Dangerous Reef near Port Lincoln, South Australia. I went there in the mid 1990s. Big sea lion colony. They were the first shots filmed for Jaws, in February 1974. Spielberg didn't begin filming on Martha's Vineyard until May. The Taylor tried to get more footage in March but they were threatened by local abalone divers for chumming up the sharks, and the Taylor had to quit. South Australian abalone diver Terry Manuel had just been killed by a great white at Streaky Bay, so the abalone divers were riled up. They went back again in April but bad weather and no sharks scuppered their plans. Cheers for your service ✌️

@@skeletalk I understand where you are coming from but as a brit myself and not knowing anything about the Indianapolis or what happened when I saw the film for the first time back in the 80's, I was just mesmorised by the delivery of Quints monologue it made you realise that his hatred towards sharks was coming from a very real place for him, this gave Hooper Brody and the audience a much better understanding of his mindset and why he hunted sharks like he does that was the purpose of the monologue as well as highlighting what happened to the Indianapolis, and it wasn't until years later I was watching a documentary about the making of the film and that I learned the Indianapolis was a true story, and yes I agree its crazy to think that it was all practical effects which still hold up fairly well even today.

For a couple of years after this movie came out, the TV show "Saturday Night Live" would occasionally do this skit where a housewife answers the door bell and calls through the door, "Who is it?" A voice on the other side of the door would say something like "Candygram." The "Jaws" music would start playing. If she kept asking for clarification, sometimes the voice would say, "Land shark." The picture looks...hazy, chalky, but that was 70s photography even on the remastered Blue ray version, it's still the same, the ocean is never really a rich blue, nearer grey, it needed some colour saturation on the holiday/vacation scene (to sell the idea it's the height of the Summer season & people want to be there) I ve heard the bite pressure of a great white is about1500 per sq, inch, 2nd only to a Crocodile, which of course has the most powerful jaw in nature coming in at up to 2200 pounds and can reach a similar length 15-17feet. I thought that- THE MEG film was fun despite yet again, toning down the gore violence, about the not so extinct Megladon Shark that reached (they think) 60ft long. (DEEP BLUE SEA is good also VERY convincing involving Mako sharks, where the attacks, make the threat convincing, as they also were in- CRAWL The Mayor to me looks more like some oily game show host, especially for his clothing, the film was shot in Boston Masachusettes Ive heard.

I think the camera zooms in while the camera dolly is pulled backwards real fast. It basically gives you that feeling where you're trying to run but can't move. Hitckcock came up with it and Spielberg's used it a bit. You can see why Jurassic Park is so good. Spielberg had all the practice he needed with Jaws. I only wish the shark's eyes rolled over white when it attacked, like how Quint described. The dead kid's mom seemed a bit too old for that character as well. Movies from this time look great for many reasons, but chief among them IMO is the lenses. Optical lenses do something to the light that is often lost or skipped over in digital. It's especially apparent in sunlight but the effect is noticeable in just about every locale. Then there's things like film type/grain etc. that give things a unique visual character. Digital ended that, at least without some tinkering in post-production. I'm not against digital but it does erase some inherent good qualities of film optics.

JAWS T shirts I once had one, yes I believe you can still get them from say...HMV Shop, or just a suplyer on line, also the poster. Even the poster art is very well done & "iconic" the girl swimming, (the illustrator got a model to lay across a chair) with the giant Shark approaching fast herself unaware. Although the proportions are off, but that's done for dramatic effect. Also the blood red lettering which contrasts with the white back ground makes it all the more distinctive. The old film-ALLIGATOR (1980)is a lot of tongue in cheek fun to, about some growth hormone from a Lab, dumped down a Sewer, that one of our snappy friends swallow, that was available here on you tube. one last thing, my favourite scene involving the Shark, when you see it, is when you see it coming under water for the man on the boat that loses his leg. it always looks best under water, the Shark cage scene is well done also.@@skeletalk

Great reaction. I'm know going off topic here, but it's fresh on my mind because a new horror movie by Eli Roth called Thanksgiving just came out. He actually made a fake movie trailer for it that appeared way back in 2007 with the double feature release of Planet Terror and Death Proof. These two movies were an homage to the grindhouse exploitation movies of the 1970's. If you like horror mixed with comedy, planet Terror won't disappoint. It's made by Robert Rodriguez who also made From Dusk till Dawn. If you want to see Kurt Russell in a women's revenge flick written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, Death Proof is for you. I think they'd be great for reaction videos, but regardless I think you should check them out because I really believe you'd enjoy them.

Thank you for the recs! I wish I'd done some thanksgiving movies but being British it never really crossed my mind, will for next year! Horror comedy generally one of my fave genres and I absolutely love a female revenge flick

@@skeletalk you could probably do that Eli Roth "Thanksgiving" movie next year. It literally just came out. I was taken by surprise, as this is now the 3rd movie to be made into a feature film based upon a fake coming attraction teaser from the Planet Terror/Death Proof films. The others being Machete and Hobo with a Shotgun. Take care.

Fantastic reaction, thank you. I don't really hate sharks too... I just know to stay away from them. I mean, why would you go for a swim in the ocean, would you go for a jog in the jungle????

It's so insane to me how sharks can't get cancer.

Whaaaat??
@bebop_557
@bebop_557 8 месяцев назад
Due to their biology, for some reason sharks don't really have cancer genes or produce cancer cells. They can get other diseases, of course, mainly from eating stuff they shouldn't (i.e. trash thrown out by humans resulting in various infections). But sharks generally have some of the toughest immune systems in the entire world. It's rare that a shark would get flatlined by an infection that would appear in its normal environment, afaik the vast majority of sharks who die of diseases were the result of human waste polluting their habitat. @@skeletalk

You're the first person for which this wasn't a horror movie... except from the perspective of the poor shark. This is the Fatal Attraction of shark movies. Poor boy got stalked by an entire town.

I hear the term-"colour palette" a lot when describing a films...look, for it's background colour. At night you couldnt see blood in water much (in the novel it's much later around...midnight, and the Shark is female and pregnant, hense the reason the animal needs to keep eating) also what's left of her (Chrissie)washed up on dry land is her head & shoulders, her lower half sank to the sea bed. I suspect they did day for night shooting for the attack scene (where they close down the apature on the lens to give the impression of darkness), in the film it looks a lot like Sun set as the sun is going down. BUT on the plus side, this is a screen classic, very well made, and acted, even though Robert Shaw was good, he should have been more of a stereo type with a beard & pipe etc, they are ACTUALLY at sea NOT on some sound stage in a studio, (something unusual for a 70s film of this type) and I think A very good Shark/s convincing generally, plus a great sense of suspence, what with that haunting music sound track by John Williams.

The shark in the novel Jaws is definitely male. Benchley mentions its claspers as it swims past the cage. Its a female and pregnant in the Jaws 2 novel though.

That's not the way I remember it ,but ive only read the book once, its possible there are different versions for different Countrys just as the book A CLOCKWORK ORANGE misses the final chapter in the American version, Ive never read the Jaws 2 book & so couldnt say about that@@lyndoncmp5751

Ok where was quint's indianapolis speech? One of the most iconic speechee in cinematic history and you cut it out. Anything else could have been cut out, but thats almost sacrilegious to cut that scene out. Sorry. That brought out the thumbs down for me.
