No CGI, no green screens, real ocean, real beach community and even real life people (the doctor was a real doctor in Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard). Notice also people on the beaches aren't super model types. Very authentic look and feel to this movie. 👍
They are and they also are extremely harmless. The odds of being killed by a shark in the U.S. are 3,748,067 to 1. Reported deaths resulting from "unprovoked attack" of sharks in 2020: 10 - worldwide! (Source: USAtoday)
@@lanzknecht8599 Peter Benchley wrote the bestselling book this is based on. He has said he wishes he had done it differently. He felt he demonized sharks, and that this made killing them easier. It's estimated that only 10% of sharks remain in the ocean and we may hunt some species of shark to extinction if we don't take action. It's still a great movie though. I guess it's sort of natural to not feel bad for a scary animal that wouldn't mind eating us. It's equally natural to grieve if we wipe out a creature that's older than the dinosaurs (predating them by 190 million years according to a quick search). We humans are complicated. :)
@@krisaaron8180 Yes, humans have sometimes a warped perception. More people are killed by bee stings or dog attacks than by sharks. On the other hand estimated 100 million sharks are killed every year with desasterous effects on marine ecosystems. And "Jaws" is indeed a great movie. Spielberg broke 2 taboos in the scene with the attack at the shore, letting a child and a dog becoming prey.
In a beach town like that, the hotels, restaurants and tourist industry make 70-90% of their yearly income in June, July and August. That's why someone said "24 hours is like 3 weeks".
A college girl, a 10 year old boy and a dog die in the first fifteen minutes. Imagine seeing this in the theater in 1975. It was a phenomenon and the first ever true “blockbuster” that catapulted Steven Spielberg’s career.
"24 hours is like 3 weeks!" This refers to the fact that they do so much business in the summer, and particularly on Independence Day, that it is equal to 3 weeks business in the off-season. These people are so dependent on the summer business. They live through the off-season on what they can make in the summer. If summer business suffers, off-season life suffers.
What happened to the good ol' American adage of "If life give you lemons, make lemonade"? You're on an island and you got sharks, close the beaches, get big boats and offer shark watching (or hunting back in those days) tours!
Congratulations!! You just watched one of the most famous movies in cinema history...and you survived lol. Great reactions. Fun fact for you - when director Steven Spielberg first heard music composer John Williams play him the 4-note JAWS theme, he thought he was joking and said 'Okay so what's the real theme song you composed?' haha. After that, Spielberg had John Williams do the music for EVERY movie he made cause he was so brilliant. He even recommended Williams to his best friend, George Lucas, who was filming a new movie at the time, called STAR WARS. Lucas hired Williams, and then had him also compose the music for every other STAR WARS movie he made...that music makes such a big difference when you experience a movie. Thanks for the reaction. Keep smiling👍🙂
Some tidbits you asked during the movie: Why does the mayor want people to go in the water? I think it’s about the image. The news is reporting live on the beach, so he wants everyone on the beach (and watching on tv) to see Amity as a place that’s ideal vacation resort for swimming. What’s wrong with Hooper’s Hands? The idea is that a hard worker will have rough, calloused hands, while a person that is lazy or doesn’t do any manual labor at all will have baby-soft hands. Quint saw that Hooper’s hands were soft, and therefore saw him as not the kind of guy that can work hard. Fishing for a living is surprisingly hard work.
The USS Indianapolis is in our history books. Although this is the largest mass animal attack in history, Quint's PTSD caused him to exaggerate a bit on the blame. He stated all the deaths were shark attacks when some bodies recovered showed the men had died from dehydration. "Jaws" made its mark on history for several reasons. This is the first movie that brought in the term "Summer Blockbuster". Jaws (and later Gremlins) gave reason for the creation of the PG 13 rating. Jaws made a huge impact on the world population of sharks in a bad way. It brought a huge fear of going into the ocean. Subsequently, the amount of professional shark hunters increased exponentially. Sharks were decimated like never before. It took environmental awareness to point out the damage we had been causing to the ocean's ecology. Populations of some shark species still hasn't recovered from the overhunting to this day.
You know what's kind of funny? The early scene when they found Ben Gardner's boat was filmed at the very end in a swimming pool. To make it seem murky, Spielberg had them pour milk in the water. LOL, the guy was creative.
5:08 -- Alex Kintner was the boy who was attacked out on his raft -- Several decades after the filming of Jaws, Lee Fierro, who plays Mrs. Kintner, walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an "Alex Kintner Sandwich". She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago. The owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her - none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They hadn't seen each other since the original movie shoot.
JAWS was the first giant shark movie. Up until this time sharks in movies and t.v. shows were these dolphin sized fish so it came as a surprise to a lot of people that Great Whites grew 12 to 17 feet in length and fishermen had reported seeing them 20 feet long so the shark in the movie being 25 long seemed monstrous but believable.
I saw a documentary about great whites off Baja Calif. and they were measuring some huge great whites. All of a sudden, the big sharks took off and the divers (in a cage and above on the boat) said what’s scaring those 17’ great whites away? It turned out to be a pregnant great white who was at least 22’ long. She was massive. Scary as all get out!
@@babyfry4775 At the time my dad had a 47 foot trawler out of Oceanside Ca. and I used to take people out who wanted to try and see a large Great White in person. Baja was a good place, so is San Clemente island.
When Jaws was written and filmed, 30 ft was accepted as the maximum, with even the 36ft 'record' from the 1800s still being in some sources. Turned out 36ft was a typo.
@@babyfry4775 I can't even imagine being close to a 25 footer. I once saw a frozen 14 footer in a glass tank and that was massive, plus a replica of a 17 footer. That's as long as my living room.
36:57 "He tried so _hard!_ This is messed _up!"_ Yeah. I think _most_ people who have seen this movie will agree, Quint's death was the _worst_ crisis in the movie. I mean Quint didn't really do anything _wrong_ and he _died._ Meanwhile, Mayor Vaughn screwed up _constantly,_ got _other_ people killed, and _survived._
Quint smashed the radio because he didn't want anyone else getting the 10K reward, is what I think. Edit: About drowning the shark, that is actually what the barrels are for. Sharks never stop moving, they have tp keep water flowing over their gills in order to breathe. The barrels tire the shark out, eventually immobilize him, and he "drowns"
True. also the barrels will mark where the shark is. Keep it from drifting off underwater never to be seen again and offer a line to winch it up to the surface to lash it up to the boat for proof.
Yeah. CGI that's subtle works really well (there's tons of it in Mad Max Fury Road but they kept the cars real, for example). But whenever it's a CGI monster or whatever, it feels like watching a cartoon.
if you like a movie from the 70s, watch the original Star Wars! this movie broke the box-office record Jaws had! these two movies brought the word "blockbuster" into the global vocabulary! i see you got introduced to Star Wars recently by watching Visions, so you need to watch the movies now! I guarantee you'll love them! I'm 29 years old and I've seen Jaws and SW a bunch of times! Both never get old!
For those who don't know, at 16:09 the news reporter is played by Peter Benchley, the author of the bestselling novel Jaws that the movie is based on. Peter's father is writer/actor Robert Benchley known for his magazine columns and short feature films (one winning an Oscar).
Brody wasn’t hurrying at first because he thought it was another prank. No one expected the shark to go into the Pond, which was considered safe water.
I can't believe the comments here about why Quint smashed the radio. On the boat, when the shark finally appeared and they were preparing to put the first barrel into it, Quint had to stop to take a radio call from Brody's wife. When the shark attacked the boat at night, knocking over the lantern, Quint had to tell Brody to put the fire out; Brody had jumped on the radio to call for help. Later, when they were trying to corral the shark with the barrels and it was all hands on deck, Brody once again ran to the radio to call for help. Quint finally had enough, lost his temper, and smashed the radio. That's all there is to it and please don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise.
Quint just didn't want any outside help brought in. This was HIS shark and it was HIS job. Nobody else's. Quint had become obsessed with the shark by then.
@@lyndoncmp5751 What was the point of including the scene of Quint responding to the radio call from Brody's wife? It was the setup for the storyline of the radio becoming a major distraction at critical times in the narrative - always involving Brody.
@@michaelbryan1882 The point was to show that Mrs Brody was still worried about her husband, to the level of phoning the coast guard to enquire. Of far greater relevance were the lines of dialogue about Quint "catching" the shark, citing the taxidermist, showing the shark jaw trophies all over his shack, showing him with rod and reel then the harpoon and barrels, trying to tow the shark back etc. Quint didn't want Brody calling mayday and bringing in outside help. He wanted the shark for himself. It had nothing to do with getting annoyed by general radio chit chat. Quint got annoyed that Brody made a mayday call. He didn't want his mission being taken away. The money came into it as well.
that's a good point. I always thought it was (1)money (2) pride (3) afraid of others POACHING his tagged shark, but i never considered that it was also an annoyance. In addition, they've already set up that Quint is cantankerous, has a temper, and doesnt like having OTHER people ("too many captains on this island") on his boat. I can totally see that. Myself, I know that I might do the same thing if something keeps irritating me at critical times, when you need to focus. When i was in medical school, my first days in the emergency room, I was glad they dont let family in the back room, because it's very distracting when you have to do procedures quickly, accurately, and problem solve on the run, while covered in blood or restraining thrashing limbs and to have PEOPLE who are not helping in the background is detrimental to the task at hand. Excellent point.
funny story: Steven Spielberg never intended to not show the shark until so late into the movie the animatronics were not cooperating all production so the editor and cinematographer used clever angles and shots to make the shark's presence and attacks more suspenseful and sinister this was one of the movies in history that had hair-pulling moments and stress that came to be all-time classics ironic right?
That's become an exaggerated myth. Bruce was never scheduled to be used for the first half of the film. First scheduled use of Bruce was not planned until the second week of July 1974 for the Orca based scenes. The beach attack scenes were filmed May to early July. More of the shark WAS supposed to be shown, but for the Orca based scenes and that's where it went wrong, filming went over schedule and over budget. That's why they heavily resorted to the yellow barrels. The first half of the film actually went more or less according to plan. Besides, Bruce could never have been used in the shallow waters where all the beach scenes were filmed. This is all in The Jaws Log and Memories From Martha's Vineyard. Cheers.
You guys were great with this. I've seen this movie like a hundred times and never once wondered why Brody didn't call his wife after finding the girl's remains on the beach, OR ever considered the innocence of the tiger shark.
15:38 "He's just eatin' _cans_ and... fishes and _license_ plates." Sharks have been known to eat some _very_ surprising things. I once went to a local museum while they had a temporary special about sharks and one exhibit was of the kinds of things found in their _stomachs._ It included a whole suit of armor.
22:17 "Why's he so _clumsy,_ right now?" "He's nervous." "Oh." "He- Remember, he hates the wat- He's _afraid_ of the _water."_ There's also the fact that he's not accustomed to working on a deck that's constantly moving under his _feet._
The 24 hours is like three weeks line gets everyone but it's actually true. This takes pace in the northeast were it gets cold. This is a tourist town so some of the businesses are only open for a few months when the tourist come and even the ones that can stay open all year make most of there money during tourist season. Quint smashed the radio because he didn't want to lose or have to share the reward money and he is driven by revenge after the Indianapolis.
Part of Quint's motivation (why he smashed the radio) you can hear the FIRST time he gets on his boat radio: "Your husband’s all right, Mrs. Brody, he’s fishin’, he just caught a couple of stripers, we’ll bring ’em in for dinner, we won’t be long, we haven’t seen anything yet, over and out!" You can tell he's LYING to the people on land OTHERWISE 100 other little boats will come out there and ruin his $10,000. Now that the shark is tied to barrels it'll be easier to find and catch for OTHER people.
I was five. I remember my folks going to the drive-in to see it. But I stayed the weekend at my grandparents' house. I saw it a few years later when it came on either HBO or Cinemax. I was terrified... the first time. 😂
30:44//That's just Quint being arrogant and vengeful-- The Indianoplis for him, made it personal. As you saw, it cost him his life. 33:47..No ladies, Sharks have to keep moving to process water through the gills, unlike other fish. If they're in shallow water where they can't move freely, they pass out and "drown" But there 's a rule about game fishing" Don't try to take any fish bigger than your boat!!" For a Great White, you'd need a yacht, with an elephant -killing rifle for back up!
Quint smashed the radio because, if he hadn't, other shark hunters or support would have arrived and cost him his victory and reward. That was his fear. And, like Captain Ahab in Moby Dick, he was obsessed with killing it.
Like most good scary movies, the body count was not excessive. There were 5 people and (presumably) one dog. 1) Chrissy Watkins, the girl at the beginning 2) Alex Kintner, the boy on the raft 2.5) The dog 3) Ben Gardner (the guy in the boat -- one of Hollywood's best-ever jump scares) 4) the man in the row boat in the pond on July 4th 5) Quint The good news is that great white sharks dont actually likenthe taste of humans... however, they somtines bite, either mistaking humans for prey or just out of curiosity to see if we're edible. After the bite, the human may actually bleed to death. But shark attacks are extremely rare.
17:39 This was a mistake Sheriff Brody didn't pick up on until it was too late. If a shark is spotted near swimmers and you need them to get out of the water, _don't yell "Shark!"_ Tell them that it has become necessary to close the beach and they'll be _fined_ if they remain in the water. They'll grouse, they'll grumble, but they'll get _out._ If, on the other hand, you yell "Shark!" they'll _panic._ They'll scramble for the beach. They'll run each other over. Some of them will get _hurt._ Some of them might even end up _dead._ Not from the _shark._ From the _panic._
So scary. The first scene you don’t see the shark, or blood, but you know what’s happening to her. This movie made me afraid of swimming in the ocean for a long time. I go out now but not beyond the waves.
I'm amazed that, in none of these reactions to Jaws that I've watched, has anyone drawn a parallel to the COVID lockdowns. Every reactor I've seen is in disbelief that the townspeople would be so resistent to closing the beaches because they're afraid of how it will affect their livelihoods, when only a couple of years ago, we literally went through exactly the same thing with the COVID lockdowns. The film was too prescient for the audience. Even after life imitates art, people still can't believe it
Quint has survivor's guilt. I've probably seen this movie over 100 times in my life, and I now have concluded that Quint had a death wish. He never intended to return if he couldn't get the shark, straight out of Moby Dick, well, sort of. He destroyed the radio for a couple of reasons, one that I just realized, is that he's having a PTSD episode from being on the USS Indianapolis," when no communication had been sent." The other reason for it is he wants the bounty, aka "the glory," for himself.
I saw this at a drive in theater when it came out. My cousin drove, since he was old enough to have his drivers license and I got in the trunk to sneak in since I wasn’t big enough to get in (I think the movie was rated R).
27:17 "the shark had black eyes, like a dolls eyes, until he bit ya, then they roll back into white" the sharks have a defense, when they bite their live food, a protective membrane slides over their eyes, so the animal or fish they catch don't injure their eyes. great reaction to a classic! 👍🦈
Hey ladies! Long time no see. You both look healthy&happy... Jaws played upon release in my coastal town (StaBarbara, Cali) for the whole summer, and MANY locals were afraid of swimming in the ocean for wks after seeing it!
Ayyeee...love what you both are doing. You have quite a few movies missing from your movies playlist! I almost missed this one! 🙂 Keep doing good things.
Around the world, shark attacks are few and far between, in the oceans. No recorded shark attacks in swimming pools. Guess where I'm swimming. By the way, part of the inspiration for this film was a series of shark attacks in a river in New Jersey, sometime in the first half of the twentieth century. I believe the species of shark was a bull shark, since they're the only shark that ventures into fresh water.
I'm 57 years old. People were happier then, it was, to me, a much better time in most ways. Love you guys and your reactions. Jaws is my favorite film of all time. I first saw it on HBO, sitting on a sofa with my best friend and his sister in 1979. Lots of screams were heard.
I'm 45... while I wasnt around for most of the 70s.... I'm confused as to what "people were happier then" means. I'm nostalgic as the next guy but you're looking at the past with rose tinted glasses. There was a lot of miserable people back then too.. especially 'Nam vets like my dad.
@@DanJackson1977 No I don't think so. There's always been miserable people. There are a lot more now. The economy is wrecked, poor people can't afford to live. Also there wasn't as much hatred and if there was you couldn't just be nasty about it in public like folks can now. Also they weren't pumping the food full of nasty crap to make people fat like they do now. The 70s, 80s, 90s were a better time, IMO.
@@DanJackson1977 You were in diapers during the 70's and you want to straighten out people who were adults back then about their experience? Biden vote much? ;))
A shark constantly needs to move so the weather flows through it’s gills, that what Quinn meant by drowning it. Get into shallow water and trap so it drowns.
It is possible to drown a shark. Sharks have primitive gills that require forward motion of water through their mouth and out across the gills. If the crew can drag the shark backwards long enough (or at least prevent forward motion long enough) tgey can driwn him.
My opinion of the mayor: ''Anyone wearing a suit that hideous should be fed to the shark. Of course, the shark, upon seeing that suit, would vomit and immediately leave the area. Forever.''
Fish breath oxygen, just like people. Shallow water has a lot less oxygen in it so a panicking shark may suffocate, effectively drown, in shallows. Realistically, that wouldnt have worked. You'd need to get the fish in a few feet of water and that would have been a long way off and that boats draft would have prevented it.
16:13 "Why aren't you in the water?" First, Mayor Vaughn, what difference does it make to _you?_ They're not in the water because they don't want to _go_ in the water, and right there, I've told you more than it is your business to _know._ But second, _Sheriff Brody,_ the man _most_ responsible for the safety of this town, has said it's not safe. Dr. _Hooper,_ the _oceanographer,_ has said it's not safe. Quint, the mariner who disrupted that town-hall meeting by dragging his fingernails down the _chalkboard_ is saying it's not safe. The only man pedaling this narrative that it _is_ safe has come to the beach in a suit and _tie_ instead of a _bathing_ suit, because apparently, _he's_ not prepared to go in the water. It's almost like he believes it's not actually _safe._ So the _appropriate_ question, Mayor Vaughn, is why _you_ are not in the water.
