There was no CGI in 1975. The shark was mechanical for some shots, intercut with footage of a real shark. Amity Island is fictitious, Martha's Vineyard was the actual place. I think the most remarkable aspect of the shooting of this film was that the stuff on the boat was shot on the actual ocean. Even films today avoid that, films before set on the ocean were shot in studio tanks. Spielberg insisted on shooting on the ocean - almost getting the film shut down because of how long it took to get each shot. Every time there was a yacht on the horizon, they had to shut down filming and wait for it to leave the horizon. By then the light had often changed or the boats had drifted, so they had to reposition the boats, all the time hoping another yacht wouldn't appear on the horizon. They couldn't just remove the yacht in post, like we could do today. No film set on the ocean was ever shot the honest way that this one was.

That has got to be the most genuine and sincere reaction to Jaws that I have seen, and I've seen a lot. You reacted exactly as audiences did in the theaters back when this movie was released. You screamed when audiences screamed and cheered at the end like they did. Your reaction brought back memories of my seeing this in the cinema when I was in high school. Thank you for that.

I saw this movie in the theater opening week. I was 6 years old, my mother didn't want me to see it but I begged and begged because all my older sibl8ngs and cousins saw it. She took me to see it and I was chill for the whole movie until Quint. Thats when I lost it and was screaming and crying. My mom always regretted taking me.😂

I've lost count how many reactors I've seen watch Jaws and EVERY one of the said, "Not the dog." Rarely does anyone comment on the kid that was eaten a minute later. It's become the thing I watch for just to get a good laugh.

Great movie. The shark from hell, Steven Spielberg couldn't show the shark at the beginning because it wasn't working for months, always sinking on the ground :D

CGI did not exist in the mid-1970s. For that matter, neither did tabletop computers. What you saw was what was fabricated or otherwise created for the film. The movie does include some footage of real sharks, such as when one disappears into the gloom after passing Hooper's shark cage. In fact a real shark can be credited with saving Hooper's character from dying as he does in the novel. The idea was to have a shorter man about 4 feet tall get inside a smaller shark cage so that any real shark would look much larger as it passed by. However, a real shark got tangled up in the cage's cables, and the thrashing about you see in the movie was genuine. Spielberg loved the footage so much he decided to forego reshooting the scene with Hooper dying and kept the original footage. A quick rewrite of the script, and Hooper survived.

It's ironic that for many years Hollywood standards very much looked down on zoom lens photography in films, considering it the hallmark of low budget European films. Yet one of the most potent and memorable moments in Jaws is the zoom-in on Martin's face as he witnesses the attack on the Kitner boy's raft. In the hands of masters like Spielberg and Martin Scorsese a once derided technique can work magic. Enjoyed the reaction.

JAWS Was the first giant shark movie. Up until this time sharks in movies and t.v. were these dolphin sized fish so it came as a surprise to a lot of people that Great White's grew to 12 to 17 feet long and fisherman reported seeing them 20 feet long so the shark being 25 feet long in the movie could be believed.

There were a lot of breakdowns in the mechanical shark so we saw very little of it. Like Alien not knowing when it would pop up made it more scary!

The movie was shot in Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. The people who live there still were extras in the movie, and had a couple staring roles. The people there are still very fond of the movie all these years later and how it made their little beach town so popular.

No CGI for this one, they built not one but four different sharks for various shots. The one you saw pop out of the water, is a big old 25 foot model using pneumatic hoses to make it move. And this was made when Spielberg was a 27 year old director.

A couple of things. Amity is based on Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod. Those towns earn all their money in the summer months. If the summer crowds don’t come then they will starve in the winter. That is the reason they wanted the beaches to stay open. Quinn wrecked the radio because he didn’t want anyone else to get the reward. Minor point. Coffee flavor ice cream is popular in New England. That is what Brody’s son was asking for, not a cup of coffee.

That’s actually not cgi, they used a robot shark for it which was made of parts and mechanisms to control the shark. The other shark at the end was malfunctioning, they nicknamed the shark “Bruce”.

Alot of people will consider this movie a classic. But i am in a small minority where this is my fav movie of all time. And for me i also believe the best character monologue scene is in this movie with Quint talking about the u.s.s. indianapolis. A movie with this type of plot should not be this good. But is!

Brody didn’t deserve to be slapped, the mayor deserved the slap and also I am surprised that the people didn’t make the mayor swim with the shark in this movie

After this movie came out people wanted to see a great white for themselves so with my dad having a fishing boat out of Oceanside CA. I'd take people out to try and see one. Where there are Seals there is usually a great white close by.

It's not greed to want to be able to pay your mortgage, feed your family and heat your home for the winter, it gets very cold in the northeast a lot of your relatives will die from lack of nutrition and cold. You close your beaches in the summer, there's not going to be any government bailout no pay check protection. You will be homeless and hungry.

Love that you love the ending scene. I agree that it’s one of the best ending scenes ever, right up there with The Thing. Both movies often have reactors complaining, but I think they are both perfect. What more story needs to be told in Jaws, other than they made it back to the beach safely? Anything beyond that is just filler IMO. Plus, that ends the movie on a shot of the ocean, which is arguably the biggest star of the film. Awesome, awesome reaction.

This was 1975, no CGI back then. This was a huge mechanical fake shark they built.

They did use real shark footage for parts of this but the close up shots of Bruce are different mechanical shark pieces. All practical not CGI. We had blue screen and green screen in the 70's but CGI was in it's infancy and very rudimentary back then. It's like comparing a computer back then to what we have now.

Yes, sharks can "drown." Most species of sharks have to keep moving to keep the water flowing through their gills so they can extract oxygen from it. If Quint could get the shark into shallow enough water to maroon it so it couldn't swim, it would "drown" after all. Although "suffocate" would probably be a more accurate term, but we can forgive Quint saying "drown" in the spur of the moment.

You cut out the best scene, quint talking about ww2 and the Indianapolis. That was considered one of the best movie speeches and scenes in history and you cut it. And no cgi in the 70s.

Unfortunately the sequels are pretty bad. There was no CGI though, they had multiple versions of robotic sharks designed for different shots and it worked out pretty well. If theres one thing movies like this prove its practical effects are always better and should be used whenever its doable to use them. Movies have become way too dependent on loading everything up with unnecessary CGI. It should enhance practical effects and do things practical effects can't do instead of replace them They also did a good job on the less is more approach in not showing much of the shark until well into the movie. Way too many movies ruin the suspense early on by showing too much too quickly these days. Another good movie for that sort of thing is silver bullet. Where they only show bits and pieces of the werewolf through most of the movie and in specific ways like the eyes watching people or focused on the feet as its moving through the woods and a few POV shot kind of thing and you only actually see the whole thing 2 or 3 times close to the end. It lets the audience use their imagination and does alot for the suspense. Highly recommend that one to watch at some point as well

An early Steven Spielberg movie you might like is duel.

This was probably one of the most 1975 reactions I've ever seen. 😂 This movie ruined the chance for a couple of generations from going near the water.

Fun Fact: Several decades after the film's release, Lee Fierro, who played Mrs. Kintner, walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed "Alex Kintner Sandwich" on the menu. She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago; the owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her, and he was none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They had not seen each other since the original movie shoot. I'm told Jeff stills own the restaurant at Martha's Vineyard and he loves talking to fans. Lost Attraction Fact: Quint's (Robert Shaw) boathouse set was built in Martha's Vineyard on an abandoned lot. The city council made the production crew sign an agreement to demolish it after filming and replace everything exactly as it had been, right down to the litter. Writing Ensemble Fact: Quint's tale of the USS Indianapolis was conceived by playwright Howard Sackler, lengthened by screenwriter John Milius and rewritten by Robert Shaw following a disagreement between screenwriters Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb. Shaw presented his text, and Benchley and Gottlieb agreed that this was exactly what was needed. It's widely considered the best scene of the movie.

Hi Cue 👍🏼 i look when you reacting on the movie 🦈 JAWs🦈 i was scared like you for the sharks 1977 when i seen this movie. 🦈 Jaws 🦈 on cinema..but only one year after this movie i start working as a Scuba Diver all over the world 🌍 i was scared my first months..and i empty a tube air in 6 minutes as was made for 30 minuts ha ha ha ha 🤯 My Divers friend helped me to Relax and learning me that it is no problem because the Sharks 🦈 worst enemy is just humans the always swimming away from us 🦈 i have working in all Oceans in the world in 38 year and never been attacked so you can drop the scary way as Stephen Spielberg chosen us to believe It's long way from the truth..so i hope you enjoy beaches in the future.. I'm sorry to have to keep correcting you but they did not have CGI back then that is Bruce the automated shark they had to build a shark and that shark gave them so many problems due to the salt water and so they had to stop and start. And stop and start so let me say this again. They did not have CGI in the seventies

Obviously there was no cgi in 1975. Come on now. This was acting and editing and a great score and a 27 year old genius director

"How did they make this? CGI?" There is a really good documentary on the making of this film. It was a disaster that almost pushed Spielberg to give up on filmmaking. The shark is mechanical and they had to use it much less than what the script demanded because it either didn't look right or more often it simply broke. The stuff on the boat was mostly shot on location so most shots will be from above or below so you can't see all the pleasure craft that are out on the water while they were filming. Some was filmed in one of those big tanks on a studio lot. If not for all the problems it would be a lesser film with many more shark attacks and much less character development.

They're gonna have to start teaching the history of CGI in school or else there will continue to be a world of confusion about pre-digital filmmaking.

Yes people eat shark, Shark steaks are very good. Some places in Asia like shark fin soup. Normally served at weddings and special occasions.

1. Goof: Chrissie's body parts are too far up the beach to have been washed up there without a storm. 2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their Merit badge. It's an accomplishment all its own. 3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off. 4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. Works every time.🤣🤣 5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along, so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen. 6. The boy that said, "He made me do it' is now the Police Chief of the town where this movie was filmed. 7. Hooper was right. The fish that hit the line was a game fish. 8. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce. It was an ongoing trope within the filming due to budgetary problems. 9. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER. 10. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the story. 11. I was in the Navy, and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting a shark. 12. Aside from the pool used in the Ben Gardner boat scenes, all of the shipboard scenes were filmed entirely at sea, 13. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody. 14. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including one of the mayors' kids. 15 The third one was so bad that Scheider read the script and said NO.

They live there, they work there, they have businesses there. There's no packing up. I building and moving it on some wheels to another beach.
