CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and Quint (Robert Shaw) compare scars they've received over the years -- both in and out of the water.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on Peter Benchley's best-selling novel, Steven Spielberg's 1975 shark saga set the standard for the New Hollywood popcorn blockbuster while frightening millions of moviegoers out of the water. One early summer night on fictional Atlantic resort Amity Island, Chrissie decides to take a moonlight skinny dip while her friends party on the beach. Yanked suddenly below the ocean surface, she never returns. When pieces of her wash ashore, Police Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) suspects the worst, but Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), mindful of the lucrative tourist trade and the approaching July 4th holiday, refuses to put the island on a business-killing shark alert. After the shark dines on a few more victims, the Mayor orders the local fishermen to catch the culprit. Satisfied with the shark they find, the greedy Mayor reopens the beaches, despite the warning from visiting ichthyologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) that the attacks were probably caused by a far more formidable Great White. One more fatality later, Brody and Hooper join forces with flinty old salt Quint (Robert Shaw), the only local fisherman willing to take on a Great White--especially since the price is right. The three ride off on Quint's boat "The Orca," soon coming face to teeth with the enemy.

It is here that Quint and Hooper realize, despite their vast differences socially, they are both men of the sea and they have the scars to prove it. Just a great scene.

Definitely. I also always noticed how Hooper's response to Brody about the Thresher shark("it's a shark") was almost irritated, realizing in that moment that he had more in common with Quint and was annoyed that Brody couldn't keep up with them. A little subtle moment but I always thought that was genius.

+Bobby Papoutsis That all depends. At least when you drown you're unconscious so even if it takes a while you'd have a better chance at living because the animals would think you're playing dead and since CPR is relatively new in the 70s you's have a better chance at someone picking you up and reviving you. Whereas Quint in the movie, he got bit in half with the teeth sunk in on the stomach. So whether the shark eats him or just lets him go floating around in the water he won't live long because if loss of his legs in water without treatment don't kill him, then the acid in his stomach mixed with his own blood would eat him alive from the inside.

During these few onscreen moments, we get a nice breather. This comes just before one of the most chilling monologues ever written and put on film. Just for a few minutes, Jaws feels almost like a buddy picture... with the fellows sitting down to dinner and telling stories.

J. Rossi you're so right man.We truly admire this movie. We feel proud we were here to watch it born or not at the time. i wasn't but i watch it later This movie is just like good old wines that just got better with age and can claim legendary movie title. This decompression part before entering the monologue part is essential to make the audience feel easy going and then to capture people's goosebumps on the monologue part just like a nail on the wood. Amazing. No words to describe.A lot has been said by a lot of comments. No special effects like modern times movies but just like someone said in the comments , in terms of acting,of editing, etc, you can hardly remember a movie that even match this one.Even i would say nowadays movies. Some of them are crap compared to JAWS.

I've read the original book, and trust me, just about all the characters are NOWHERE NEAR this likable. Spielberg himself said that he was just about rooting for the shark itself when he read the book. Smartest thing the man did was change the personalities of the characters - the fact that we end up caring about them is what helps makes this movie so damn good.

For those who don't understand the bull shark scar. Shark skin is very rough, rougher than sandpaper and is covered in denticles. These denticles are very streamlined and sharp, which helps a shark move in the water more efficiently. A scrape from shark skin could severely cut your arm, poor Hooper :( And this movie is still legendary in 2023!

I like the setting in this scene. Hooper and Quint are together under the light, sharing stories about scars. Brody is in the dark, away from them because he doesn't have the life they do. The stories about scars also alienates Brody because while Quint and Hooper are bonding over stories about injuries from marine animals, Brody silently looks at his scar, a scar that can't help him be a part of the conversation. The isolation as well as the togetherness of the characters is so subtle, but so obvious at the same time just by how the characters are placed and the lighting.

The clip ended early. If you're curious, the USS Indianapolis was sunk by a Japanese submarine in WW2. The survivors were all (except one) killed by the largest known shark attack in history. He talks about it later. I've read a little bit about the book. The captain of the battleship was put on trial for negligence. Interestingly, the captain of the submarine that sank it spoke in his defense. The public anger from families of the sailors was too much and the captain committed suicide. He was exonerated sometime during the CLINTON administration!

It is legendary that the making of JAWS was a nightmare for all involved, with budgets and shooting days going overboard. Steven Speilberg later said that it was when filming this scene and the subsequent Indianapolis speech that he and those involved finally knew that they had a movie as opposed to a possible mess. How fitting that it was the scene when Quint and Hooper finally find common ground after butting heads for most of the journey.

This is a moment in the movie where the action grinds to a halt so the audience can process what had just happened in the previous scene. It's a time for both the characters and the audience to take a break from the action so the film is enjoyable, not tiring. You could get up, go to the bathroom, get some more popcorn, get a refill on your Coke, come back, and not miss anything absolutely essential for the story. If you decide to stay, you get a little bit of bonus character development with these guys exchanging stories. Win-win. The Japanese have a name for moments like this. They call it "ma." The fact that so few modern films have any kind of ma really makes me think that Hollywood really needs to start slowing down the pacing and letting the characters lead the way, instead of the plot.

This is my favorite scene, must be some improvisation going on (Shaw looking off set as if to Scheider) then more comedy banter, building slowly to the edge of the chasm where tragedy lies. Superb!

The response is key in the way it lets you know the USS Indianapolis story is a real thing that actually happened.

When I was little, my favorite part of this movie was the shark. Now that I’m older, my favorite part of this film has definitely got to be the human elements. Every scene these three have together are awesome.

Good scene seeing them all getting along. So cool to see them comparing scars. I wonder what caused the scar on Brody's stomach.

This was probably the first Jaws clip I ever saw. Me and my friends watched this bit over at my friend's house and laughed our asses off because of "the weird beard guy with the laugh." A couple of years later this was to became my favorite film when I saw the whole thing ("the whole DAMN thing!"). Jaws has some really interesting backstories to it. I do feel kinda bad that everyone had to go through so rough times. Spielberg himself stated he's had nightmares of the production years later.
