a lot of people know this car only because it was included in the 2005 video game Gran Turismo 4 the story behind that is the Japanese developers from Polyphony Digital came to model some other cars that Jay had, and when they saw this they were so stunned that they absolutely HAD to include it in their game!

I used to love drifting this 'car' in GT4, it wasn't fast, but you could get (and hold) some massive angle... and depending on the track, it would take up most of the width, making overtaking it almost impossible!! XD

1,790 cubic in, 810 hp., 24 spark plugs, four mags, two sidedraft cabs, it was aircooled and the frist tank it powered was the M46 @48 tons or 96,000 pounds. this engine also powered the M103 heavy tank @ 62.5 tons, M53 and M55 SP arty, LVT P-5 amtrack(USMC), the M47 tank, and the M48 tank..and there where around 5,600 parts to this engine...Oh ya it was built to burn MO gas or 80ct.gas...and the crank case held 22 gal of oil (50 wt).

This V-12 1800 cubic inch tank engine from 1953 reminds me of America's tank problem after she was at war in December, 1941. When the Axis Powers declared war on the USA after Pearl Harbor, the US had poor tanks: the M2 light and medium tanks (lots of machine-guns, but thin armor, cramped 2-man turrets, problematic gasoline aircraft engines, and an ineffective gun). The US tank corps could have copied proven tank designs in the world being currently used in the war against the Axis by our allies. Some tank experts argued that the Soviet T-34/76 (1941) medium and KV-1B heavy tanks were the best in late 1941, and the USA should have either make direct copies or base them on improved US versions with better quality steel, better transmissions, better electronics and better radios (and wet ammo storage for better survivability!). The 45-tonne KV-1B had nearly invulnerable armor in 1941, an improved high-velocity 76.2mm gun (tremendously better than the nearly useless US 37mm M2 tank gun), more mobile wide tracks, a strong torsion-bar suspension, a powerful 600 hp V-12 38.8 L (2,367.7 cu in) diesel engine (better than the tall flammable US gasoline-powered 400 hp aircraft engine in the M2 and following models), and a more spacious 3-man turret. Instead of making improved versions of the KV-1B & T-34, the US made the lousy M3 Lee as a stop-gap tank and then to the M4 Sherman that was unsatisfactory when fighting superior German armor.

I had a buddy that collected tanks Ive worked on those engines ! another wild one that would be great in a hand built car I always thought would be the supercharged continental air cooled flat 6 that's in the walker bulldog it screams when you throttled it up and would turn the mufflers red hot and ruin the baffles in them .There is a M48 sitting at a national guard armory in Jeffersonville IN that used this V12 engine I never have stopped and climbed on it to see if its in it or not If so wonder if its stuck or not and would still run ?

I worked on Technical Manual Revisions for a couple of variants of that engine (Used on the M88A1-A2 recovery vehicles). Man it's a beast.
