+El John. True dat. He's a survivor of a predominately jewish white environment and he didn't sell out. He didn't do Hetero in a dress. Respect and Charlie Murphy R.I.P.
If you honestly think that men in dresses is some form of social control or bigger thing than "oh man in dress is! funny because thats not normal" then you're too deep into some dumb stories. Men in dresses has been funny since the dawn of time. Fucking hell it's not some secret cult shit.
Eddie Murphy wrote the playbook on what to do and avoid on SNL in the 80's. Black actors and actresses just need to study so they can run the right plays then bounce with the W.
Yeah but before Eddie went to Hollywood he was pressured to leave SNL. Lorne Michaels has been quoted as saying that he would never keep a talent (black or white) that becomes larger than the show like Eddie after he left. Therefore, all SNL cast members should beware of the chopping block when they see their names getting out there in movies or major platforms. Do like Eddie and get big in a short period of time, then you'll be set and not "upset"when they show you the door.
Eddie Murphy wasn't under Lorne Michaels. He's a bitch and he's vindictive. You got good people but he doesn't care, he ruins the show. Even legends like Chris Farley were barely on SNL at one point. Looking back on it it feels like he was always there but he shut Chris Farley down and fired him as well.
Such a very interesting interview. I've learned more about Jay in 40 minutes than 6 years of SNL (where he was woefully underutilized). In fact, I think he has uttered more words in this interview than in all of his SNL sketches combined. Looking forward to the next several years of his career, to be certain!
yeah we learned that in addition to his lackluster performing, he also wasn't contributing a lot to writing sessions that all cast members participate in, and constantly asked his peers if they thought he was good enough to be on, why he didn't get more air time, etc. putting them on the spot to console him for his lack of quality. he exposed himself here in efforts to get sympathy
Jay Pharoah has my respect for not selling out. Clearly, the man is talented with his voice impressions and random freestyle rap. I think he just needs a medium where he has more creative freedom and then he can showcase his artistic talents and personality more. SNL is one of those shows where they use actors as empty shells and stuff them with some script and a wardrobe. You only work for such a show to get your name and face out there. You dont stay with the show if your goal is become a bigger star. Keenan is a prime example of an actor that stuck with the job because it was "stable" but you dont see people talking about him like hes some amazing actor.
Never conform to someone else's shit no matter how much they paying you. Keep pride in yourself and who you are. Do you fam. P.S. RIP to the legend Charlie Murphy
RIP Charlie Murphy the greatest raconteur ever. Jay gave a very honest interview awesome talent. Love the early life stories from Charlie before the Murphy fame had the most interesting life from the start.. Billy walls!!!!
I think everyone on SNL know they small window to make a name for themselves and then bail. Kate will probably on SNL for another year (two at the most) before she leaves, her stock is high right now.
Yo Rosenberg made a analogy about adding black people to SNL by saying "every now and then they'll add a little grape jelly" SON HOW DO YOU NOT CATCH THAT SHIT
I was just listening to things and when he did the Kevin Hart impression at the end I honestly thought they like randomly cut to a clip of Kevin Hart it was so spot on.
What they're saying is true. Genuinely took me 3 years to find out that Lonely Island were on a thing called SNL, always thought they were just friends doing youtube
TstormVA2012 .....YESSSSS!!!! I still remember eddie murphy and the " Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood" I have to laugh just picturing him sneaking out through the window ... landlord was at door/rent was due!!!! Soooo funny!!!
I love Jay but this dudes talkiin about how they only wanted him for his impressions... yet he can't go a single interview without doing a dozen impressions including this one?? I don't get it
SNL has become this weird thing where they go for the easy jokes. Jokes that anyone could make and they think they are clever for it. The Trump jokes are made on Twitter every half second. SNL was the funniest thing on TV 10-20 years ago. Like my man said they gave up.
Like the easy joke thing is seen with the South Park creatures. They said they wouldn't do Trump jokes because they know it's way too obvious. It's like making fun of a special ed kid. Sure anyone could make the jokes but that doesn't make it funny.
Ladies & Gentleman, I am happy to present my new song “Wait on it”, which was produced by amazing producer KCC from GDM. I would really need your support right now - to support Hip-hop music and, most importantly, indie artists in music industry! Please listen to this great tune and share with your friends/co-workers/family and all people, that you know! Peace & Love, King
I think he was one of the funnier cast members of that particular cast during his tenure. Black or white. He didn't want to do certain things, and I completely respect that.
I wanna see Jay Pharoh challenge SNL now... make his own platform. Doesn't have to be just like SNL or him making a "black SNL" but making a sketch show that would be cool
Pharoah was upset about being placed in a creative box, but he doesn't want to do things that might expand his library. Keenan has been in a dress many times, but he does plenty of skits and characters. Dana Carey became a household name from his Church Lady skits. Several celebrity hosts played other genders, especially a lot of professional athletes. Their reputations and careers were not harmed. That impressions segment was something that Pharoah did NOT want to do, but Leslie Jones pushed him into it. That's proof of how doing things that might not seem fun, true, real, or "keep it 100" can lead to amazing results. Pharoah should blame himself more than the powers-that-were at SNL.
