Met Mr. Rubin at an audiophile show in San Francisco. My father in law builds amps and such and had a room. I was acting as DJ. Rick Rubin walked in and my jaw dropped. He was just about to leave and I just reached out to shake his hand to tell him I was a big fan. Then I asked him if there was anything he'd like me to play. He asked if I had any Frank Sinatra. I said "Absolutely" and he sat back down. Zoned out for a bit listening then said "Thanks" as he left.
RR is ridiculous...... he just gets hip hop producing regardless for what artist or what decade it is.. He knows that it's completely based on aggressive percussion in its roots... That will always be sounds of the genre in it's roots.. So yeah he'll throw in samples and groves but at the root of his style is the most simplistic formula... RAW
So my brother was the biggest Jay z fan, he introduced me to this song and we used to rap it word for word together from kids to before he passed away in 2016. I watch this every now and then and just smile cause I see my brother in this. Ah man❤️
He approaches music like a fan… that’s what is key. Not from an engineer, not from a musician with theory, not from a record company who was cross promotional ability …. Just as a fan.
