Jazz Guitar Lesson: Beginning Jazz Blues Improvisation - Jazz Guitar Scales Shortcut (easy)
Your first experience trying to improvise in a Jazz guitar context can be scary. There's a lot of chord changes and lots of scales, arpeggios, modes (etc.) to learn.
So here's the shortcut: two pentatonic scales. Improvise on Bb blues. Go!
In this video, we will be exchanging full 12-bar choruses (soloing) together. Lots of fun. Backing track below. Use this little trick to play NICE jazz guitar solos using TWO scales (instead of dozens) ... Enjoy! :-)

Planning to share this to my.subcribers that have shown an interest in jazz blues. Looked over some of the material. Liked reading the tab and standard sheet music. I did notice some things that I had missed or forgot..nice video and nice program.

Mark, nice job! You took away some mystery and explained why much of what we hear in jazz sounds so familiar. Great tone. And that is one pretty BLUE G&L.

Don't forget the Dominant 7th Pentatonic - 1,2,3,5,b7 This has the major third of the major pentatonic and the minor seventh of the minor pentatonic. In reality, it's nothing more than a dominant 7th arpeggio with the 2nd (9th) added in. Well cool. Perfect for jazz blues soloing/licks...

Lovely lesson. More in general, would you mainly use arpeggios and passing notes when improvising over this blues or you actually like the use of the blues pentatonic?

i think you might be going a tad fast for beginners on this one. If i didn't know the scales you were doing, i couldn't pick it up from the speed you demonstrated any better than watching Mark Knopfler play. Do you have a more basic video, that i can refer my beginners to? i try to encourage them to not only work on our exercises, but also from videos i've found that is at their level- to save them from the boredom of practicing our last lesson for an entire week, until our next visit. i enjoy it a lot when they come in with something they have learned from a video like one of yours. Thanks, -trout

Nice lesson. Pythagoras invented the major Pentatonic Scale for the Greek theatre About 15 years ago..I was doing it on the piano in C. C D E G A C. Notes of (I saw mom mee kiss ing) Santa Claus. Basically a C6 arpeggiowith an added.2. There is more to this.

i think ur so simple bro awesome! im a 7 yrs bassist and now i am almost 1 yr since i shift in playing guitar from rock to rnb i have a new band and we are starting to play jazz it confused me i get frustrated . i think the foundation is to know chord progresion of jazz and inprovise on the blues and pentatonic scale to do a solo am i ryt? please help me bro
@jazzguitar
@jazzguitar 9 лет назад
Stacey Pineda Thanks for the comment. The approach to using blues/pentatonic scales is good, yes. However, most jazzers will use more scales and chromaticism to connect their ideas. Think of it like a "refined" version of playing blues licks. :-)

@bugeraboy
@bugeraboy 9 лет назад
@jazzguitar
@jazzguitar 9 лет назад
@bugeraboy
@bugeraboy 9 лет назад
@MarcAndreSeguin1984
@MarcAndreSeguin1984 9 лет назад
@bugeraboy
@bugeraboy 9 лет назад
@MarcAndreSeguin1984
@MarcAndreSeguin1984 9 лет назад

dude amazing way to explain it, but i have a dumb question over here: A# Minor Blues scale has A# C# D# E F G# A# Major Blues scale has A# C# D# E F G (G is the only difference) you used a G Minor Blues scale structure to get easy the major blues, which is: G A# C C# D F (adding C and D) Is this a kind of a mixolydian mode (A# C D D# F G G#) mixture? I don't get why it sounds great. Thank you!
@jazzguitar
@jazzguitar 7 лет назад
You did not spell the A# major blues scale right. Recall, the major pentatonic contains the notes 1 2 3 5 6 of the major scale, with the blue note between tones 5 and 6. This means that A# major blues scale = A# B# Cx Ex F# Fx ... where the x means "double sharp". This is a very yuky looking scale, so I'd rather spell Bb major blues scales = Bb C D Eb F F# G. Thanks! :-)
@oziris1244
@oziris1244 7 лет назад
Oh I get it! thank you for your answer. great channel!
@jazzguitar
@jazzguitar 7 лет назад
Hey Enzo, Just a quick correction: The Bb (A#) major blues scale notes are: Bb C Db D F G or: A# C C# D F G => Which are the same note as the G Minor blues scale. Check this page out: www.jazzguitarlessons.net/jazz-guitar-blues-2.html Why does it work? Very simple! The G Minor Blues Scales work well over a Blues in Bb because G is the relative minor of Bb. Here is how I like to remember it: The 6th Degree of a Major scale corresponds to its relative minor. When it is a minor chord, the 3rd degree is its relative major. Hope this helps ;-)
@oziris1244
@oziris1244 7 лет назад
of course it helps :) I haven't watched all your videos yet, but I have to ask...Do you have any special technique like this one in order to obtain a smooth fretboard walking? Because it looks so natural, I loved it. Thank you again for your answer :)

Great lesson, but i'd like to ask you something. When you ask us fo soloing, you improvise using chords, is there an especific class about it?
@jazzguitar
@jazzguitar 9 лет назад
+Rafael Machado Could you be more specific, I'm not sure I understand your question. Thanks! :-)
@rafabcm
@rafabcm 9 лет назад
When you ask for us for soloing, you play the lead guitar part, and you play diferents chords over the progression and not only one , time 6:50 , i' d like to know how to do it. Do you understand me?!
@jazzguitar
@jazzguitar 9 лет назад
+Rafael Machado Ah yes, I understand. In the video above, when I improvise, I "punctuate" my solo lines with chords. But this is optional. The chords that are play are *just* the Bb blues chord. You can find the progression here: www.jazzguitarlessons.net/support-files/jazz-guitar-beginning-jazz-blues-improvisation.pdf

this is total nonsense. Jazz, even "simple" jazz, is a language. Playing it means having to learn its language, grammar, vocabulary, etc. It is hard, difficult and demanding. This type of video serves no purpose at all. You sound French. I assume English came to you "just like this"!!
