One of the greatest unaccompanied bass solos you'll ever hear was the solo that the great Ray Brown was heard to play (in various forms) during the last decade or so of his life. It encompasses everything he was about: beauty, swing, love, sound, and GROOVE. The two versions I reference are:
from 1991 - • Bass geniuses: Victor ...
and
from 2001 - • Ray Brown - Solo Bass ...
Dig how different these two versions sound!
My bare-bones transcription can be downloaded here: drive.google.c...
Ray's composition "Afterthoughts (Part II)" can be heard here: • American Jazz Philharm...

so beautiful I wanna cry. What a beautiful and gifted soul. I'm a drummer who plays a bit of piano but Ray Brown just makes me love music all over again and again.

Thanks for the transcription, Paul. Never heard this before! The first time I heard Ray was on Oscar's album We Get Requests. Incredible! Got see him live in Chicago with his trio featuring Jeff Hamilton and Benny Green at the Jazz Showcase at the Blackstone. I never heard a trio swing that hard ever! My wife insisted I say hello to him and I was so intimidated by him I said what do I say to a legend. I regret it to this day.

Awesome transcription! I come back to this concert every once in a while. I remember seeing on PBS when I was in high school. Everything that he, Edgar & Victor did blew my mind. And it was damn near impossible to find it until a few years back. Love those pre-internet days!

Wow! Thanks for putting this together. Ray's Black Orpheus solo on the LA 4 Scores album has a lot of the same elements and has always been one of my favorite solos. Check it out if you haven't heard it. Found you from Jason Heath's site - subscribed!

Thank you for posting this important work. I wonder if I would benefit just as much by woodshedding the solo and not writing it all down. Excellent transcription though. RAY BROWN so much a GIANT.

Please check out : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gs3EHvNRHdY.html at 39:10. If you really listen, Ray doesn't play "Jazz" on most of that tune. He phrases like a guitar but again, not Jazz guitar ... Why ? He was a close friend of Luis Bonfa (the composer) and Luis showed and explained to him how to play Brazilian Music back in the beginning of the 60's ...

Music is supposed to be joyful - 'a joyful soul' you say - but at the same time you're looking like you're having zero fun or enjoyment in what you're talking about. How does the deadpan serious demeanor bring in or attract our beginner players ? - you don't have to be a clown show but man, but you're really leaning into - 'jazz is serous - does it look like I'm enjoying myself ?' I pass.

way to comment on an early video from almost 3 years ago. Please don't watch anything else I've done. I'm sure my lack of emotion in my videos will bore you to death.
