Have to comment further, teacher to teach. The delicacy of his trills, the shadings, the demand that we anticipate to the last possible second before we explode. It's exquisite beyond words. Beethoven does this for me. Ella does this for me. Previn does this for me. This is absolutely heart-stopping and heart-pounding in turns. Breathtakingly, achingly beautiful.

This is the greatest piano player that has ever lived, in my opinion. I first saw him in Chicago when I was 14 nyears old in a local club that is long gone. I have seen him perform across the US and take pride at being able to applaud his gift. Thanks, Gene.

We can all play it, but we should acknowledge that it is an artform created and pioneered by Black Americans.

The groove here. Serve the song. I am a bass player. We have Ray Brown himself keeping it simple but with a little bit of spice. When I teach bass., I always ask my students to transcribe much of this bass line. When I was learning myself in college, this was the standard of serving the song and grooving in Jazz. In pop, it is Paul McCartney and Ringo.

Just the best version ever. I listened to this version for years.... Then saw it on RU-vid and think I was paralyzed with amazement and joy that I was actually watching what I held in such high esteem. Btw... How does Gene Harris play with such dynamics? And Geez his hands must kill after the crazy glissandoz at the end! To have something this fine captured for society to view is a human treasure for all times!

thank you "the bluesiest jazz pianist of 'em all" While the rest of the world seeks other more convoluted paths to musical Nirvana, I'm sticking with Les McCann and Gene Harris and Red Garland's methodes, cuz they take me there without fail, and I can't seem to really dig into th3 stuff that skims over the top of the swing. I need it deep and wide and ....well,,,,,,, obvious. I need to feel enough that I can't stop moving. There's latin and classical and Indian and Uzbek and Mongolian inside jazz now, of course, but if you're going to play a swing ballad or bop.. GODAMMIT IT's GOT TO HAVE THE BLUES UNDERNEATH IT or it is mental musical wankery, from a rhythmic standpoint. or at best a nice. intellectual stylistic experiment. TING TING TING TING bore bore bor-ing. No, you cannot reinvent the wheel. You can mess with the treads and the rubber or plastic or metal, but it's got to be round, and it's got to ROLL.

Gene Harris was one of the greatest! Purest, gospel and blues infused jazz with great musicality. What a great trio: Ray Brown one of the truest masters of the bass, and Jeff Hamilton right there with them, sensitive to every breath of the music.

I find it extremely touching. I feel like I missed out that by the time I discovered Jazz some 3 years ago..all these legendary Jazz musicians were gone..But I will always cherish these YT performances as the testament to their glory.

OMG I think I was there during that engagement, definitely my only time seeing Gene Harris, my all-time favorite pianist. Same arrangement but taken to the nth degree, like 3 or 4 peaks instead of 1, each higher than the last. Brought the house down, and then the house came down again when Ray looked at him and said "you keep playing that piano like that, it's gonna follow you home!"

@ Did Ray use the same line afterwards? I have wanted to commission a drawing or graphic cartoon of Gene walking away from the Blue Note with a piano walking behind him saying, 'Uh, Mr. Harris, could you play me again?"

@@dangould7679 No, what I remember was Ray telling two funny stories. And also at one time, while playing, he looked at me in the eyes, as if he was telling me : "Hey boy ! You did not expect what is happening to you now." Never been happier in my life.

Yeah , very funny vato, but Jeff is simply a bad assed drummer. I suppose if you played drums with Ray, it would be ,. what? two and 3/4 black, cuz you so brown? No, it wouldn't, cuz can't swing like Jeff Hamilton. I know that for sure. it would be 2 musicians, and a minus .5 musician , you . ¡Caudate ese! i saw jeff and this group in SFin the 90's. All bad The best- All 3 of them. Just simply the baddest.. Not brown or black or white.
