My father has a Flip5 (GG). I was so impressed, I bought one myself. But fiinally holding my own Flip5 in hands - my favorite songs, which I know very well, sound just different and not as warm as I was used to. It just drove me crazy. I told my husband over and over again that something was off. We put both boxes next to each other, listening to our favorite songs, immediatly noticing the difference. We checked the new box, it's "CN". We are no nerds, and I could tell after 3 seconds of listening which one was which and which one was the "warmer" box with more bass. I am really happy and thankful that I have found this video because I thought I was going crazy and there was no way I would get a good Flip5 again. We are now heading to the store to search for another GG - thank you so much for your effort --- great content!
I was torn between TL and GG versions of Charge 4. In the end, after seeing some reviews and reading some comments I got a green GG. Wasn’t sure about the color, but it was the only one GG in the store. The GG has a plastic driver, the TL a paper one. According to some reviewers the TL version sometimes distorts the sound on high volume. There is some mechanical rattle going on. And it seems like the GG considered to be more durable in rough conditions.
Alan Ross Reviews you’re making great reviews. I wonder how come you have so small amount of subscribers. I guess that’s because most people like to see more like a show, not a detailed review with “boring” diagrams and explanations. They don’t really care about the sound quality in general, they just want to know which speaker has more bass and is louder.
i think im doing ok with getting for 4k subs :) basically im doing this as an enjoyable hobby and every subscriber is a nice bonus to me. Thanks for the comments anyway but it really doesnt matter 🙂
So glad I found this review, found so many different reviews and opinions on this speaker and they all probably have different versions of this speaker. Will definitely go in shop to check the serial numbers before I buy it. Thanks for the clarification, I subbed!
Just finished watching your video and decided to check my Charge 4. Which I had pulled apart a few days ago because it has stopped working and I was curious to see what was inside. Turns out it's a TL and it has a paper driver. Really enjoy your videos. You are the most informative reviewer I have come across.
You just leveled up, you have reached "Detective" class, Alan! I don't know how you produce such quality videos and don't have more subscriber's. Thanks for all you do, I don't buy any of these speakers but I watch all your videos because they are so interesting.
The real question is, considering thw water resistance, is how durable they are. The one with paper drivers, well, it would make sense that they would break down/dissolve after a few times they get wet. And excluding the fact that some might have paper drivers, still, the question stands, how much of water treatment can they survive. (The speakers themselves have potential to last for years)
what the f. glad i drop on your channel. i was bothered by other people saying about i got the cs,gg,or tl. i said to myself wtf are they talking ablout. i know only flip 3 flip 4 flip 5. not the versions. then i research about it. you tube drop me to your channel. so i grab my box look at the serial a little bit scred at first then baammm! i got the tl version. i'm glad i got tl version. i know it doesnt affect that much but the point difference for me is good. thank you for that informative vlog. new sub here. Godbless!
Is it just mine? My flip 5 sounds kinda broke at highs its sounds like youtube when you have a slow internet and kinda sound a radio too and it sounds not right. BTW its also TL version
I got my Flip 5 TL before i watched this video and when i watched this video now i know which version won!So i saw that the TL won so i was really happy that i got a TL ocean blue!!!I did buy it online but i'm glad that i got a TL!!!I liked!
Thanks Man !! I threw the box into the trash and could not find information where is the serial number of my jbl Flip 5! You know a lot more than the official JBL website.
@@alanrossreviews Is The JBL Flip 5 Red Version TL Version I Went Online Looking If It Is TL, CS, GG But There No Such Information I Could Fine And I Ordered It Off Of Amazon For 109$ The Original One It’s Going To Arrive This Friday The 19th Of Feb But I Really Want To Know If It’s TL It’s Sound So Much Better Than The CS, GG Versions...
I had a cs and broked the spider in the speaker. I have a gg in black has better bass in normal mode than cs version. Gg-casual users . Normal bass. Tl - to much bass rips pasive radiators Cs - brokes the spider inside the speaker driver. (Spider=fits around the speaker voice coil and its atached to the speaker basket .It is one of the components (along with the cone) that help to keep the voice coil centered in the magnetic gap and affects excursion (movement).) Nice video. JBL FLIP 5 VERSIONS BLACK- GG/TL/CS WHITE- CS RED- TL GREY- TL/GG BLUE- GG PINK- TL CAMO- GG WHITE CAMO- GG YELLOW- GG TEAL- TL/GG Ocean Blue: TL/GG Eco Green: TL/GG Tomorrowland Edition: TL GG- For casual users, has normal bass TL- For bass testers, bass so heavy that it rips passive radiators, not very waterproof CS- For casual users, has a lot of excursion, rips spiders, very waterproof and it can float (Cs its not very waterproof)
Alan Ross Reviews haha, very true. Already having issues with them staying in stereo, cutting out in party boost & turning off randomly. Christ, I long for the day I find a Bluetooth speaker without its problems! Other than that, they’re excellent 🤣🤣🤣
Alan Ross Reviews have to agree, apart from my motion + speakers giving me nightmares in stereo I can’t say I have any problems with the no name brands. I’m considering a minirig 3 2.1 set up but I’ve heard they can be pretty troublesome in TWS themselves which is putting me off.
thanks for this review, Now I know what to chose which is GG considering The bass is much louder on these two, And I really love the camo color than the other plain colors...
Recently decided on buying another Flip 5 for stereo. My current flip 5 is a black TL, so I was looking to get a white TL. So far I've gone to two stores and all the whites are CS. Probably going to have to go with the Navy Blue, unfortunately. Thank you for making this video.
@Name Unidentified Na they're not, one of the TL's at the store was navy blue. Doesn't really matter now though, I returned the second Flip 5 because it was a pain in the ass to deal with the stereo pairing and the app. Probably going to get myself 2 wonderboom 2's since they don't rely on an app to use stereo.
@Name Unidentified watch Flossy Carter's video, he pairs it with the button on the speaker. There's no app for the wonderboom. The flip 5 won't pair in stereo without the app, unlike the wonderboom which does everything without an app.
I was gonna type separate comments but i might as well type it all. Prepare for a lot of reading 😅. Firstly, i think by now there are 6 different flip 5 models: GG,TL,CS,TT,GT,and CN with CN being the Newest im pretty sure. unfortunately if you go to stores currently almost every new jbl speaker is either GT or TT for example the flip 6 and any flip 5's if they are still even in production. The go 3 is usually NT or CN although I have a pulse 4 that's NT. I actually had a white GG around 3 years ago which is kinda rare since the CS is usually white. I dont have it anymore but now i have a teal TT. As for it being unfortunate,I think the newer GT and TT models have weaker Drivers and Passive radiators, or either the amplifier is now more powerful. The TT is similar to the TL but the cone is more of a matte/ more "raw" paper while TL kinda has a slight coating. Also the TT/TL drivers are a little smaller and have a different metal basket shape compared to GG and CS. GG models have issues with the spider(suspension). TT models get extremely hot around the driver it actually almost burnt me(this only happens when DSP is turned off of course). This is probably the same with GT. I also notice the battery life of the TT model is worse than previous models. This type of problem happens with all jbl speakers. As newer models are made of the same speaker, they tend to get worse in my opinion.maybe JBL is making then worse on purpose to push you to get the new speakers like the flip 6, or maybe they are more focused on the development of new speakers, so as production continues for older speakers the quality isnt top priority anymore but rather the priority is for the flip 6,go4,extreme 4,etc.Also,if you are wondering how to tell the age of your speaker you can tell by the second set of letters. For example your GG is GG-GJ. Theres a manufacturing date chart somewhere online but me and a few of my friends have the image. GJ would be July 2019. my TT is TT-GM so it's July 2022. The first set of letters(GG,CS,TL) determine where the speaker was made. GG,TL CS models are manufactured in china, and the newer TT,GT, and CN models are manufactured in Vietnam
Yes it is, red, forest green, yellow and camouflage Charge 4s are almost always GG (like I have), and the pink, blue, teal and grey are usually TL. Black and white are mixed 50/50 I believe. You don’t actually need to check, because I have got the answer :p GG is more durable and just completely waterproof, whilst TL has a paper driver and thus has a standard airleak, because the air can just go through the woofer. Also, the passive bassradiator on the GG moves less, because the rubber that holds the radiator in place, is a lot tougher then on TL. If you want to have it to listen music on high volumes a lot, I would recommend TL. Although I just basically said that GG is “better”. TL has a punchier bass and better mids. For a person like me (I do JBL blowouts and upload it :p), I would recommend GG if you want to abuse the “low frequency mode”, which disables the bass limiter. I have a GG, as you can see in my profile picture haha. I am planning on buying a TL in the future though, because it pops very loud in low frequency mode at higher volumes and has a massive passive radiator movement. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, although I might not have an answer. And also, it doesn’t hurt me to check out my channel hahah
The GG version of the Flip 5 sounds much better phisicaly. Last week I've got a blue one (GG) because here in Spain the CS version is not avilable (withe)
It would be good to go after the JBL Flip 5 stereo settings. If you buy two of them they sound much better than one (I suggest to buy them in pairs) as we know already thanks to Alan and I absolutely confirm that. Unfortunately when two of them paired in PartyBoost you get them in mono mode. The JBLandroid app theoretically can switch into stereo, but it does not. Maybe Apple app works, but I cannot check that. It would be good to find a key press solution that sets two flip 5s into stereo mode.
only pair one of the flip 5s with the phone. start up one then connect the app to that flip 5. once the power bar shows startup the second flip 5/ press the partyboost button on both. now you should be able to switch to stereo in app.
Thanks alot Sir Alan, as soon as i saw new video upload by alanross i got so excited. In coming few days ill go to an audioshop and check the box to make sure its TL version. I bet the people working at the shop doesnt know about this.
Haha, your video made me frustrated that I got the GG (blue one) and also bought a TL (Grey) to compare myself. Gotta say, the TL has more treble and at maximum volume it has slightly better bass (at maximum volume, the lower volume is the same), but other than that, I can't hear any major differences. I think the GG produces slightly better bass in 50Hz range, because the speaker is moving on the floor on certain bass boosted songs, where TL doesn't. But overall, TL has slightly clearer and slightly better sounding sound compared to GG.
Hello Alan, I subscribed and activated the bell because your videos are just so awesome to watch! I found out that white Flip 5s are ONLY CS and grey Flip 5s are TL. Black Flip 5s are TL, GG and CS and I actually got me a white Flip 5 and I actually wanted a black one and because I have to wash my Flip 5 sometimes because of my OCD and the CS plastic driver was the way to go but the TL really had an awesome sound so is the paper driver of TL and GG really waterproof??? I'm not so sure.... The GG sounded really terrible in my own tests (treble waay too much and no bass) but the TL sounded a little bit muddy so... Isn't the CS the best one because the plastic driver and the balanced out sound (bass like TL and treble like GG)???? I am shocked that JBL is doing this to their customers.... I am actually happy now with my white Flip 5! Alright Alan, have a very very nice day or night!
i can only tell you my expereince with my three versions, whether there is lots of sample variation i dont know. they all have a big high end roll off plus recessed mids which means they are never going to sound the clearest of speakers but for me the TL was the best of the bunch. they are all waterproof yes. cs does not have a balanced sound from my own experience. actually none of them have a balanced sound, they have jbl tuning which means these days a smiley face response but the flip 5 also has big high end roll off.
Alan Ross Reviews Hello Alan, I now have a black GG JBL Flip 5 and I hope that I get a red TL to connect them and compare them and yes the CS really sounded terrible and I am now really really happy about my GG I have no idea why I thought it sounded terrible lol so yeah I'm really happy now... I just have to charge it now lol
Update on the waterproofness of the GG: I tested it for a very long time dunked in water and it still works!!! I am really happy and the TL will come on christmas!
Great review! I'm wondering if there are differences in the quality and resistance of the speaker versions and which one would be the best not only in terms of sound? TL, GG or CS?
TL:Sound but not that durable but most bass GG: Not that good sound, not that good bass, but best water resistance and most durable CS: idk maybe same as GG but lil bader water resistance
GG- For casual users, has normal bass TL- For bass testers, bass so heavy that it rips passive radiators, not very waterproof CS- For casual users, has a lot of excursion, rips spiders, very waterproof and it can float
I have 4 flip 5 black Two GG Two TL one flip 4 gray they all sound good i am in my 60s who wrote songs gold platinum also recording engineer recorded and mix . These speakers are nice paper or plastic I use all 4 on party mode from RU-vid to movies from my iPhone and iPad to play Back good for me
Hey so there seems to be a fourth version because both on the box and on the label by the strap it says "TT" just thought I would let you know I just received my speaker yesterday from JBL themselves so it's definitely not a knock-off
The cs doesn't float good because it might not be sealed. That is also probably the reason for it not sound good, because if it were not sealed the passive radiators would not work right
Oi... I just received the flip5 today and it's the TT version... completely new. That throws a wrench is these comparisons. I chose a certain color to either get the TL (hopeful) or the the GG, but specifically to avoid the CS based on this review. But this one's a TT... hmmm.
It does'nt matter what model it is, it depends on our ears. We have different ears for hearing it might sound good to you , it might sound terrible to others. . If ears are full of earwax , that 's give us different version for hearing.✌ It 's not a big deal having a different version if you use it outdoor you won't see any difference at all. 😀
Awesome video! I would prefer the one that floats but it performed the worst in your tests. Do you think for a non-audiophile that I would actually be able to tell the difference?
OMG 😭😱, I just discovered this video and I just ordered a black JBL flip 5 online yesterday. Hopefully is not a CS. Seriously RU-vid search results is getting dumber, instead of showing things I want they keep showing recommend results 🙄, that's why didn't saw this video.
Well I got really lucky I just got my red foot five yesterday from my local Best buy and I didn't even check to see which model it was thankfully I got lucky I got tl. Do the red ones only come in tls though?
Ordered two black Flip 5s from the same supplier - they arrived today - one is TL and the other is GG! Thankfully neither is a CS, but weird that suppliers have a mixed bag.
Alan Ross Reviews the Earfun I have to buy from amazon of German, here in Switzerland we don’t have amazon, in case It is not good, to return is a lot of process, and they are a little bit bigger. The sound quality is not much different, the flips look nice, but would cost me 50% more expensive.
Alan Ross Reviews yes... or maybe buy 2.1 minirig 3 with the new minirig sub 3, it’s already released. Do you know about the minirig sub 3? If it performs better than the sub 2, I’m going to buy it.
I just went to the store and every color is TT version please test that one against the rest! This is becoming ridiculous I’m thinking of buying a boom 3 and give up on JBL
Today i was in my lokal Store and I looked to the Flip 5s All black,Blue Camouflage ones are GG all White ones are CS and the Grey ones all TL so i Thing there is a sample Variation ............
not sure what you mean by sample variations. when i say that i mean the differences in sound may exist between same model numbers as well as different model numbers. when i get my new tl i will test it and it my two tls sound the same then it isnt sample variation but differences between model numbers.
@@alanrossreviews did you end up with sample variation between the 2 TLs you ended up getting? I just bought 2 Flip 5s. Also, based on what you have heard so far, can you break down which colors match with which versions? So far sounds like all grays and reds are TLs for instance.
Got the TL version. Sounds great but i have heard something about "delay of playing" due to Bluetooth versions. I hate it, is really annoying when playing a video or a song. So I was wondering if it would be possible that usb type c adaptator could reproduce sound not only charge.
@Ezra Redgwell I will buy it tomorrow, if there are no TL I will pick GG but if don't have both of them and have only CS I will back home. I think TL and GG are the same bass but TL the sound is clean than GG.
Hello... I have a new JBL Flip 5 - GG version for about 2 days ... But I have a problem. The speaker makes a little noise when playing back at low volume. When the music is paused, the noise stops after about 3 seconds. The GG version of Flip 5 in the store did the same. JBL Flip Essential did the same thing (in the store). But the JBL Charge 4 in TL version is totally noise-free. Does anyone have any idea what to do with it? Charge 4 is unnecessarily big for me. I want JBL Flip 5 without anoying noise... Any ideas? Please... I don't know what's wrong with JBL Flip 5...
Great work Alan!!! I think the returns at JBL may go up juuussst a little bit...lol FYI color makes no difference my local shop has TL version in red and black.
yes but do they have mixed version same colour? so far nobody has seen two versions same colour as far as i know? so maybe all reds, greys amd blacks are TL? dont know just puttign it out there. JBL are lucky i am not a big channel ha!
You're the best for bringing this fact up, but does the same hold true w my red GG Charge 4?!? If i like the speaker and want more clarity should I get a TL version if I want another one mate?
they do sound different but the differences vary between model. i think the tl charge 4 is said to be best but gg has more best. i never tried the gg charge 4 so dont quote me 👍
@@alanrossreviews So I bought the Charge 4 TL version and tested it against my GG... I don't know if it's bc my GG is broken in, but it was considerably louder and clearer definitely more bass than the TL. So it was returned.. Now I need a Motion Plus, I've been a huge JBL fan, still love them. But i need to branch out and hear some other brand's speaker options. Especially after all of the amazing reviews including yours.
Thank you so much for telling us bout the 3 versions. I have the TL. I really like it. The TL rocks. Why would they make 3 different kinds of the same speaker?
So which is the perfect one for sound quality in all three frequency high , mids , low .. help me please ... And why cs the worst one please help me 😭😭
