Just bought the Xtreme 3 after selling my old Xtreme 2. As an audiophile, I can confirm the Xtreme 3 has a deeper bass and sounds more refined. Very happy about it.
Yes mine arrived yesterday and is amazing, i had a onyx studio 6 Hk and my xtreme 3 is Louder and similar in bass response, im very happy, you have gg or nd serie? I have gg is dont know if theres much difference between 2 versions
@@franzwolf2444 I have the nd, but to be honest the battery life of the 3 isn't that great. The xtreme 2 was so much better 😪 The 3's battery is dead after 7-8h hours at 50-60% volume
@@davids.8844 well is true the battery not great but for me is enough that time it depends the use, for trips, pool, stat with friends, Picnics, beach, or movies i thinki 7 or 8 hours is enough, for example my harman onyx 6 only support 3 hours on max volume, thats is poor time

This is just a fantastic and insanely thorough review. Thank you so much for this and for all the time you spend putting this together. A masterpiece! I have the Xtreme 2 and think I'll hold on getting the 3 for now. Doesn't seem that it's worth it. Thank you sir!
The boost on highs is an advantage for outdoor as well on stereo pairing, lot of airiness. Great job as always Alan... you are the Champ. Hopefully you make a stereo text in the future.
Hmm, not sure I will be buying a second one unless its just to send it straight back. No doubt it will sound great if the app actually works to set it up. 😝😂
Thanks for the review!! I been waiting and waiting for the extreme3 here in the USA. But the extreme2 just went on sale at Target $149.99 US so I just got it. I could buy two extreme2 at this price and still have $50 in my pocket.
Having seen the inside of an xtreme 3 on a video, it seems the woofers now have smaller, lighter neodymium magnets, which are just as powerful if not more. The benefits of these are that the speaker will be lighter. (That’s where the 1/2kg went.) And it also means the magnets do not take up as much space in the speaker box, allowing for deeper bass!
Hi Alan, happy new year mate and thanks for the cracking content you keep treating us to. I've just bought the Xtreme 3 as I got an extremely good price. I went to activate low freq mode to try and it went louder and less bass heavy so as standard it was in LFM. First impressions out the box were good but slight disappointment at dsp lowering bass as it got louder. Then after deactivating LFM and adding bit more bass through phone eq I'm absolutely blown away by the sheer volume and power this has. I actually can't believe the difference. I went back into low freq mode and it sounded crap so maybe LFM just for low level maybe. I would say that the battery life will be massively improved when in normal mode. I'm literally hammering this thing at the mo and can't get it to distort hardly. Ahh yes.... Dial back treble slightly in normal mode. Cheers
not sure where this lfm idea came from. this has always been a service mode that bypasses some dsp and limiting. plenty of people have blown their speakers like this. if you like it then cool but its not a hidden low frequency mode. you get more bass because you no longer have the limiters which are their to cut distortion. the x3 is a decent listen but did you see my xtreme 3 vs rave neo and motion boom?
As someone who lives in the us im glad you released this comparison today. I bought an xtreme 2 yesterday for $149 at best buy i figured the xtreme 3 wont sound that much better then the 2 just like the 2 was to the 1. So im glad i didnt wait to pay full price for the xtreme 3
@@modelotime3608 but I had that and this dude had the JBL it sound louder and clearer my Ue just sound loud and distorted I pawned it so I'm looking forward to extreme 3 it has to be louder than the UE
Great review, detailed with sound analysis and enough of samples. I'm listening to this review on high end studio speakers, and everything what you say is actually spot on. Good to have pointed out that which speaker a person prefers can also be prone to tolerance of a person and sensitivity to higher frequency sounds. The JBL Xtreme 3 seemed overall more pleasing with more detailed distinction in picking up details into the songs (and flatter frequency response), but it did indeed sounds at moments quite harsh in the higher end frequencies, which could cause much quicker (painful) ear fatigue. Perfect advise also in the end: it is a boombox, not a speaker designed to listen to on lower volumes and being able to get a studio sound where you can pick up the fine details in music. It's designed to create a big of a small party athmosphere. IMO: I liked the increased clarity of the JBL Xtreme 3 in the mid frequencies, but it don't like the quality of the higher frequencies which sound too harsh. Still room for improvement on that part.
what it does it give deeper bass than most of the alternatives, that would be the reason for me to pick it up, for a dollop of bottom end but once the novelty goes its onto others 😜
Nice to see how the Extreme was improved from generation to generation. I do prefer the look of the original Extreme though. The latter versions just looked like someone "juiced" the original Extreme. The improvement in bass performance was also interesting to see. I wonder when they've be able to get these little boomboxes to get down to 40 Hz..? 🙂
Great job buddy, Xtreme 3 turned out a pleasant surprise to my ears, as long as it doesn't sound worse than the previous version its a win for JBL i think. I like that it goes lower and that it lost some weight while at it. Looking forward to all the comparisons m8!!
@@michaelhopkins5531 he didnt say that, he said the xtreme 3 just needs to be at least as good as x2 because along with the drop in weight it will sell.
I really like the design of the First JBL Extreme. The side metal woofers are amazing to me. Really dislike the plastic cheap looking ones they have now
tracks: 12:30 ROY KNOX - Over My Head RYYZN - Secrets 18:48 Púr Múdd & Andreas - Get Away Nadro & Saibu - Paka Paka 23:41 Amoji & Lylah Maryah - To You 28:28 Jenny Chapin - A Better Me 30:34 Luke Bergs - If Only (feat. Iva Rii)
@ Cuz neodymium is more expensive and I believe is even denser than iron. So having bigger neodym magnets would drive both the price and the weight up, decrease battery life, without adding any real benefits. The amount of sound produced is basically the volume of air moved. If you increase the power but not the speaker size, you're just wasting a lot of energy that's not used for moving more volume of air.
👌🏼in-dept review...me having the xt & xt2 will not hesitate in buying the xt3...each sound great on their own...the highs r a bit too much but an update will fix it...🍻
@@alanrossreviews its just like when the flip4 sounded out of the box...then a few updates (2/3) fixed it...maybe the xt3 will be the same (some minor bugs fixed)😝
@@philjoysavio6805 for me the extreme 2 was never the same after firmware 1.2, it didnt go too loud but it was balanced and clear. But people wanted a boombox like the x1 and they retuned it 😝
@@philjoysavio6805 yeah the Onyx Studio 6 has way better Bass mono extreme two has stereo I think it plays a little louder what's a better balance of sound quality
Great review as always Mate! And with your review of JBL’s Xtreme 3, is it time to LEVEL UP?? Perhaps you can review Boomboxes? Such as JBL’s “PartyBox On-The-Go” vs their “Boombox 2.” Peace
those bigger ones are just too big for me to properly test without really f&*king off the neighbours 🤓! id love to but i think the xtreme is the limit, but i may try the boombox and see how it goes.
@@alanrossreviews Thank You for replying to my question. I really do love your reviews. Because of them, I look at my own Sony as well as the other stereos more critically, understanding their short comings. Please give reviewing Boomboxes some thought. Awesome vid. More info than a lot of other "reviews". I just ordered an Xtreme 2 here in the states on sale for $150 (114 pounds) the Xtreme 3 is going to be $350 here and I just don't see it sounding $200 (150+ pounds) better. Thanks for the great insight on these speakers!
i’ve never been impressed by the xtreme lineup from listening in person at tech store displays. Doesn’t look like this 3rd model is much better than the last one.
I agree. The x3 is too chirpy to me. I went to the store, they had the x3 and x2. I loved the x2. The x3 didn’t sound bad but it wasn’t as good. I defiantly don’t have clogged ears and have very good above average hearing.
I've still got my my Xtreme 1 with some EQ adjustments it been fine for me but I think it's time for an update but I'll wait for a little while for the Xtreme 3 to drop in price I don't think the current price is worth it!!!
@@nikb6528 no because older speakers have connect plus but the new ones have something called party boost or something like that and it can only connect to the most newest speakers which is kind of a bummer if you have older speakers
33:30 Interesting, I actually find the noticeably louder higher-end frequencies (trebles and hi-hats) to compose a better "sound" in the Xtreme 3 in comparison to the older models. Btw, thx very much for the review!
@@alanrossreviews Pleasure. Really professional stuff. Do you expect you'll ever get your hands on a JBL Boombox 2? I'd love the 2.1 minirig setup, but can't abide all the cabling...
@@alanrossreviews Well I can't respond on that subject, you're the pro here. But what I do know is that with with you can absolutely tame the harshness and boost mids and bass to make the sound very satisfying
well, thank you for the video. i was having a hard time deciding which one to buy, finally, i will buy xtreme 3. it suits my needs best, i intend to use it outdoors and sometimes indoors, for gatherings with friends and maybe parties.
I have the Xtreme 1 and bought the Xtreme 2. Played them both and the 1 absolutely beats the 2 into next week! I took the 2 back for a refund. I've heard the 3 and it has slight more clarity than the 1 but not enough to make me go spend my hard earned cash. It's the 1 for me. Might look at the Boombox 3 though
Iv had the extreme 1 since they came out , I love the that it came already with the eq that I would dial in myself and for the music I listen to I don’t need the deep bass , in fact if you have normal songs without the deep bass you need the punchy mid bass
Thanks for the review. Yep that 12.5 kHz peak kills it for me. Same problem I had with Charge 5 ,some hi or hi mid frequency has coloured the sound too much and overpowered lower freq's. Again, realy nice test. Have a nice day
First off, Great content Sir! I have a pair of xtreme's and a pair of xtreme 3's. The 3's sound no better to my ear at typical listening levels than the xtreme's. Maybe worse. 3's are a slick package, though. My only complaint is the stereo pairing. It sucks. I have an open case with JBL to replace the pair, but, I don't have high hopes.
A reminder that all three xtreme are biamp so they have 4 independent channels, 2 woofers for LF and 2 tweeters for HF, making: xtreme 40/80 xtreme 2 40/80 xtreme 3 60/100 (extracted from service manuals, all three use a pair of TPA3116D2 amps)
@@alanrossreviews well, this is what I got from the service manuals I found, so I did read it and also there’s a separate test for those amp in particular as they’re sold in a separate modules, with its respective info
with that info published in the texas instruments document, these amps can get a variable voltage input, that makes them define the actual power output, for that reason jbl can establish a voltage for each ac mode and battery mode, resulting in different power output changed dinamically as plug/unplug to charger. The voltage range is 4.5 - 26 V and I believe the xtreme 3 uses 13v for battery mode and 19v for the AC mode
I want xtreme 2 because it has better bass and sound quality and has a carrying strap and speakerphone but the flip 5 has no speakerphone so I prefere the Jbl xtreme 2 😍❤️
I think that xtreme 2 sounds still the best for me, xtreme 3 sounds weird without real lower mids and also with this one note bass peak, also highs are really metalic and weird sounding, xtreme 2 sounds more refined. I also like design from xtreme 2 more
Just noticed that the Xtreme2 is bi-amped and the Xtreme3 isn’t (according to the spec sheet), so that might help with the weight, but I don’t know. I’m not by any means knowledgeable about batteries, but the battery seems to have stayed the same at 36.0wh for the X2 and 36.3wh for the X3. Awesome video as always! :) Edit: I just read that it has a smaller magnet, but I think moving from bi-amp (2 amplifiers, either for separate channels or 1 for tweeter and one for woofer) to a single amplifier still makes it lighter.
@@alanrossreviews yeah but those magnets have a big difference in size and weight being neurodynamic I believe that to most of the weight it's a half a kilogram the amps making a small part of that weight
I've owned the Xtreme 1 for 4.5 years now. Absolutely great speaker, the big let down is that the battery life is going down very rapid around the 2 year mark. I got it replaced under warranty but after 2 years the same problem came up again. So great speaker but the battery just stops working properly after 2 years. Thus I need to say, I use the speaker almost every day. A friend of mine had the same issue with it and bought the Xtreme 2. Also a great speaker but not very noticeably different from the Xtreme 1. I think the same goes for the 2 and 3, slightly better but not very noticeable in day to day use.
@@alanrossreviews Thanks for the response :) So the Xtreme 3 is noticeable the better speaker, but looking at the prize maybe not worth the difference?
there's so many spare batteries in amazon or ebay just pick the best reviews, had changed mine 2x no problem i have my xtreme 1 for 5yrs now,,just look videos on youtube how to change the battery..
Do you think the durability is better? It sure looks like it can take a beating. I had a charge 3 that took a beating to say the least. This looks waaaay more rugged.
I think a lot of people will want it even though we know the outcome, motion plus cant compete with the bass but the overall package and price narrows the differences down 😜
GG have Normal Paper Drivers And the Second version is ND, ND have Waterproofed drivers, like Charge 4 and Flip 5 😂 Oops forgot to mention why the Xtreme 3 just got lighter. In the Xtreme and Xtreme 2, normal magnetic rings were used for the woofer and in the Xtreme 3 the neondymium was built in so that weight is reduced
boomy or boosted? the 1 had the most boosted upper bass, not much deep bass. x2 was better and x3 even more so for deep bass but x3 lacks some upper bass and x2 is the best tradeoff.
The question is, is the 3 worth the extra money over the 2, considering the 2 has dropped considerably(€169,- for the 2 vs €280 for the 3 on the mainland atm)? No sure about UK prices, but I suppose they follow a similar pattern.
I found a way to correct the tinny harsh sound of the JBL extreme 3.You go to Samsung A5 and go to SOUND then ADVANCED the to the 6 band EQ...push first slider to max,the middle to half, and the last to max.The speaker now sounds like a killer speaker!
I didn't like the sound of xtreme 2 and really enjoyed listening to the trance genre on xtreme 1. I liked the punchy bass as you put it. Xtreme 2 was really underwhelming for me and didn't sound "strong" like the xtreme 1. Do you think xtreme 3 can be an upgrade for me that like the sound of that the 1 and not the 2? I didn't "feel" the music as much as while using xtreme 2 (only on 1.6 firmware) but xtreme 1 was great. My setup now is 2 xtreme 1s paired together. Thanks Alan
hard to say, x3 has even less upper bass than x2 but goes deeper now. what it does have a clearer sound thanks to the big 12khz peak which might sway things back in its favour against the x1.
Wow what a thorough review! Kudos to you and thank you so much for your genuine engagement. Please keep it up. I have the Xtreme 1 and really loving it. Just can´t find any occasions where it is that useful. I always end up bringing my Charge 3 with me as it is more portable. Anybody else experience the same?
Just bought 2 charge 5's and wow what a difference. Even sounds better than my Xtreme 1, better bass, mids and highs. Won't bother comparing it to my charge 3 as they're not playing in the same league, by any stretch of the imagination. More appealing form factor as well due to its small size and portability. These will be my main drivers when out and about.
That spike at 12k makes it sound so much airier and spacious, as if like it has a totally different soundstage. And now that the bass digs deeper against a more neutral frequency range, it brings a whole new dimension to songs. Ill be sticking to my W-King D3 Pro though...
Gonna buy partybox 100 than xtreme 3 in my opinion,,i have jbl xtreme 1, wking d8, dockin d fine, onyx studio 5, doss soundbox xl and tribit max sound plus ..my next speaker will be anker motion plus and partybox 100..nicE review there mate!

@@michaelhopkins5531 might just dull the sound if they did that, a lot of these speakers are going for that peak. The problem jbl has is bass stops at 80% making it sound even more boosted in that region.
I would compare the bass to my modified w king d8. I took it apart and the seal is a bit pathetic. I replaced the standard bare-minimum seal with a bead of silicon on the inside interlocking seal. The bass now going deeper. Wish you could measure the difference. I figured out there was a leak when I used an air hose to blow off debris from the front of the speaker and saw the passive radiators fully balloon out indicating the air was getting into the speaker somehow.
Felipe, dá uma passada no meu canal, eu também faço análises de caixinhas de som, além de fones de ouvido e smartwatches, vai gostar. Abraços, meu amigo!
Anyone who can tell the difference between Xtreme 3 GG and ND Version? Cause my Xtreme 3 is an ND and most RU-vidr seem to have a GG Version... @Alan: What‘s your X3 version?
Not for me, the xtreme 3 is best listen at 80% or under. The xtreme 1 is probably better outdoors with its thinner sound and punchier but less deep bass.
Waiting for 2 to arrive but think I'm gonna cancel and grab the 3. They've added a distinct signature soundstage similar to Marshall's amazing sound signature.
