The engine compartment in the Type 2 is much larger than the Beetle so I've always found the nut easier to access in the Bus. There is plenty of room to reach around the side of the fan shroud, provided the battery is out of the way.
I and doing my own wiring harness on my 71 right now and I can’t fit the engine back up through my engine bay I only have a 1776 motor but the generator sticks out too much and hits the frame for some reason you guys made it look so easy like it just slipped right up in there any tricks or advise
Only thing going for us was experience. It's a tight fit and a balance act between leaning the motor forward and back to clear the generator shaft, just take your time, you'll get it!
We probably won't do a all in one conversion video as the conversion is a number of small steps (changing out bulbs, relays, the coil, etc) and one major step, changing out the generator. We did do a alternator conversion video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S05pHNO7RQw.html which covers the most difficult portion of the conversion.
@Sam_Mebane been trying that, but between little moving space and rusted in there, little guy ain't coming. And naturally, this is the last bolt to remove before I can pull the engine.😬
I am pretty sure VW installed the engine before the body was installed, but they had a lot more practice than I have! I would highly recommend installing the engine after putting the body back in place.
Hey Jbugs.. I have a 1600 going in an early bus.. my engine seal has the double flap.. should both flaps be above the tin, or should the tin sit between the double flap seal?? BTW.. love the video's.. TIA..
We always set timing advanced, and show the process in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NjKxtbYvSfo.html and here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8E1QC8K9LlM.html
We didn’t forget anything as the car was not ours to change. There are plenty of VWs out there still running a generator and we’ve already covered swapping out to an alternator.
