Honestly the only reason I started watching this was to see you swap out the bushing 😂

Without a lift and with the engine in place, it wasn't possible for us to get our cameras up in place! Nowadays, we have better equipment and could have show but this was one of our first videos we did, way back in 2015.

If you're looking for more in depth wiring information we did completely rewire this car, the series is linked here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R7gqiXR-61g.html

I just installed one if these in my '72 super beetle and I get a whirring noise when I try to start it. I think I did everything right. I didn't replace the starter bushing, though. Any ideas/comments would be appreciated.
@JBugsVWParts

+Justin McCarthy The starter bushing could be the cause of the sound. Also double check the flywheel teeth for any grooves or wear marks. Any irregularities on the teeth can cause odd sounds as well.

PLease can you do a video on installing a Key-less starter (push to start button)..thanks in advance
@JBugsVWParts
@JBugsVWParts 7 лет назад
+Hopscotch Go Installing or converting over to a keyless starter probably isn't going to be a video we do anytime soon as most of the cars we work on are street driven. Converting to a keyless start is just a matter of eliminating the ignition switch. Bypassing the switch is fairly simple as there are only 3 wires that operate the ignition and starter. Main battery power comes into the switch with a large gauge red wire. Power to the coil and fuse box is a smaller black wire. Power to the starter is a large gauge red wire with a black stripe. Depending on the switches or button you use, you would power the switches/button with the large red wire, power out of the switches/button would go to fuse box / starter with the small black and the red/black wire.

I’m currently trying to restore a ‘67 Beetle. There is a series of three wires just next to the starter on the fender side that is cut. I’ve been trying to figure out where the hell those things are going to and it seems to go right into the engine bay, but the car I am working on has a firewall there. My plan for the weekend was to start taking the engine apart to get back there though I now think it would be more wise to just drop it out. If you guys have any idea what those wires could be and how I could replace them, I would be eternally grateful. I just came across your channel and I already know it will help a lot with my summer restoration project.

The starter would normally have one thick red wire (coming from the engine bay, through the firewall) which attaches to the #50 terminal on the starter. The other wires may be the reverse light wiring, 2 thin black wires, in a separate harness. Those 2 wires would come through the engine firewall as well. Most diagrams do not show the reverse light wiring, we cover it on our wiring video -ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--aPpYs6TtzM.html - starting at about 2:33. Feel free to contact us at 1-800-231-1784 with any further questions.

That is still a video we haven't managed to shoot even to this day. Back when we were filming in a parking lot it was impossible, now that we have a dedicated shop we MIGHT be able to do it, once we get a lift put in anyway!

I am installing a starter that did not come with any bolts. I am going to purchase the D bolt, what size washer and nut do I need to purchase for the D bolt. Also, what bolt and nut is used on the bottom starter bolt?
@JBugsVWParts
@JBugsVWParts 6 лет назад
The nuts for the D bolt, lower starter bolt and the other engine mount bolts and studs are 10x1.5mm. The 10mm hardware is linked here: www.jbugs.com/category/10mm-metric-hardware.html if you can’t find it locally.

I know this is for a bug, but Im having issue reaching that top bolt on my Type 3, is it the same method? gotta get in through the engine?
@JBugsVWParts
@JBugsVWParts 6 лет назад
We have a video on removing the Type 3 engine here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AvPUT6zsqNU.html and at 1:36 in that video we remove the upper starter bolt nut. The nut is much easier to access in a Type 3 as there is no fan shroud in the way

I just replaced my bushing / starter and having long start issues now.. meaning it whiler starting it sticks or over starts.. what could this issue be?
@Sam_Mebane
@Sam_Mebane 3 года назад
We're aren't sure what a "long start" issue is but issues with the starter NOT starting can often be from a bad ground, or low voltage from the ignition switch.
@jeremiahlord6094

@@Sam_Mebane It's when my car is started but the starter is still turning over to start the car. So I turn the key to activate the starter. Then the car starts but the starter continues to turn... if you are trying to test the start by using a screwdriver the starter will make a noise and turn try to work.. Well, that noise is made when I start the car and after the car starts that noise continues for like 3 seconds.. not sure if this helps?

Hey man I’m changing my 1998 beetle starter and the starter looks exactly as this one, i look online but it states it’s only compatible with years under 1980s I’m confused my is 2.0L automatic
@Sam_Mebane
@Sam_Mebane 4 года назад
Most starters for cars look very similar. We specialize in 1979 and older VWs. We don't offer anything for the New Beetles so that's why everything listed is for the older models.
