Having a look at the JCB 3CX Contractor Backhoe loader with the EasyControl joystick set-up which differs from the standard JCB Sitemaster.
I have used backhoes from Case, John Deere and Ford New Holland and they all have their good points but I just like the JCB as it does everything I ask of it.
If you are involved with construction or earthmoving then I hope you enjoy this video.

A nice demo vid, really makes the old 3C mk3 (1978)we used to have look somewhat primitive when that machine turned up we thought it was fantastic because it had a heater!

The 3C was amazing in its day Duncan and can still put in a shift now. I've just bought one so it will be interesting to compare old and new side by side.

Greetings! A bit late for the party, but here at last! I was able to read over the comments and do find it interesting, the opinions of old vs new. I left the open-pit mining industry roughly 20 years ago and was operating machines from the mid '60's to the late '70's. Mostly through my twenties. the main reason I left was fatigue. We were competing with contractors who were running 'Industry Standard' equipment and we were competitive, but the human cost was high. You won't keep most good operators around with sub-standard equipment, no matter what you pay them. I am in the landscape industry now. We just recently sold our old faithful Bobcat 843. Old, worn, loose and tired, but still working. We replaced it with a Cat 297c multi-terrain loader. This machine has so many features that earlier engineers had not even thought of. It is plush by comparison. However there are functions that the old Bobcat actually performed better. I choose to accept the fact that the joystick controls and the air ride seat as well as the Heater in the winter and the A/C in the summer make up for it's shortfalls! Thanks for posting! See ya in the comments!

I think when you're young also you get a bit of a kick from toughing it out on a rugged, rough old yoke but as you get older, you want a nice, easy to operate machine, quiet, warm/cool and comfortable !

What do you think of hydrostatic drives in general? They seem to have improved in reliability over the years.
@LordMuck
@LordMuck 7 лет назад
It's not actually hydrostatic per se Don - I am not a huge fan of hydrostatic transmissions but these Powershifts are much better than the old torque converters. Its very smooth, power delivery is constant and the shifts are positive and not clunky.

Nicely explained overview Kurt. Now, in the mid 90s he got one at the garage. Still got it, quick glimpse at the end of my video. Sorry links aren't allowed, here's the title 'Another Sunday Another Local Show at Rand '. Anyway, when he got it we used it in the wood. Was going to clear the pond, but that's another story. However there was quite a ramp coming out, and you know how tippy they are. Of course I got the job of driving it. Thought it was going on it's side.....apparently my face was a picture lol. Despite it's rough looking appearance, the pins and bushes etc are actually in very good condition.

That smooth ride system looks to be most useful and makes the machine much more pleasant to operate as you clearly demonstrated. Can you just throw that powershift from forward to reverse without any pause without causing harm or damage? Also is reverse the same speed as forward or quicker/slower?
@LordMuck
@LordMuck 7 лет назад
You can throw them forward to reverse no worries and if you did it by accident on the road then it will just trip the fuse, no big dramas. I always apply the brake to take up any play or slack when shuttling so it doesn't throw all the weight into the other direction immediately, it's a habit I still have from driving loading shovels. Speeds are almost the same if not identical back and forwards which is great for loader work. Some great questions as ever Dan.

Great overview, that's a cab that would be comfortable to do a days work in I've had a very brief play in the old style non turbo 3cx think it was a m reg I didn't warm to it, my overriding memory was v slow on the road and a bumpy ride not being used to backhoes I preferred the 360s I am more used to and have never been in one since. Yours looks to have some go about it and a smooth ride, perhaps with the 360 style controls I could enjoy operating one rather than cursing it!
@LordMuck
@LordMuck 7 лет назад
I've certainly spent time in worse cabs than that ! I reckon an M reg would be about 1994/5 so probably (trying to remember) a Project 12 which I never really liked either.

@LordMuck

About 7 and a half tons plus a bit more for fuel etc. Depends what the ground is like you're working on but in all honesty, you won't beat a tracked machine for ditching.
@TemeraireJimny

mostly it's about 6 to 8 inches of top soil over sandy clay with inclusions of broken rock. Only reason for the jcb would be for travelling on the road between different fields. Cheers for the advice.

Its amazing how many things around the world change, in about 30 to 40 years just about nothing was sold with a GP bucket, everything was always 4in1 and centre mount was never really popular here, Thats interesting to see they are working the joy sticks like that in that machine, when we climbed over into the centre of the footings in house building we use both loader bucket and Hoe at the same time to suspend the machine which with that would not be possible to do, I can see that they are trying to make things simpler but there are many times that we would drag the machine around by the hoe to re position rather then lift legs we would just lift it and re set which is allot quicker then the other way. But nice bit of kit and the load ride system is just amazingly good on all the modern machines instead of catapulting you out of the seat at 30 to 40 K's an hour lol not to mention the steering with your wheels in the air
@LordMuck
@LordMuck 7 лет назад
Yes, unless there's something I am missing, being able to walk the machine out of a mess would be a slow chore to say the least. It can be done but not anywhere as easy as the older machines.
@AttitudeAdjuster
@AttitudeAdjuster 7 лет назад
I still think that the operator on the backhoe when he was at the top of his game was the most impressive to watch, I remember one guy digging footings in sand and then walking the machine into the middle without dropping pace, it was as if you just stepped over it on foot and as quick and I remember wanting to get that good as he was he didn't even drop a cup of sand in as he went and he did that all day long. I hear exactly what your saying Kurt there are many many improvements in these machines in both safety, handle, comfort and ease of operation but we are now in an era where they produce them by the engineers working for the company and many are losing contact with the on the ground users which is never a good thing, changing the control to one end or the other instead of a live circuit makes it cheaper to use, but we never bumped the controls and if you ground attachments and come back to idle then you can talk safely to anyone on the ground without having to kill all circuits but they are trying to make them for anyone with no experience to operate, and there has always been operators and drivers and the difference is light years apart but unfortunately drivers THINK they are as good as the Operator but that is only in their dreams.

@LordMuck

I used to think that way but it's like p*ssing into the wind and things have changed so we have no choice but to go with them or get out. The thing I like is seeing someone made to look good with a modern machine then floundering like a fish out of water when they are stuck on an older machine which I can drive with my eyes closed !
@AttitudeAdjuster
@AttitudeAdjuster 7 лет назад
Oh Mate you crack me up, You bring such wonderful clarity to things that I Love about you, not only do they flounder but they also don't get how we operated them like an octopus with multiple fingers feeling and working independent of the others but all still in unison. As well they don't see until its either shown or explained how much more versatile the machines were when you could control everything or wild down the road when the deadly bounces really got going. I guess we will always Love the old stuff along with the New

@LordMuck
@LordMuck 7 лет назад
Probably one of the earlier 3CX's Wayne because the 3C before it (around the same time the 580F was about but not many 3C's in the States) would outpush a Case day in and day out but then when the 3CX first came out it didn't have the grunt and grip of the older 3C and the Case outperformed them in a lot of ways. Case were always quicker on the backhoe than JCB. I've driven a lot of Case machines including the F, G, Super K and M and I have to say I always liked them.
