The JCD 8898 Soldering and Hot Air workstation is a good choice for a low budget soldering and reworking tool.
The tools feel comfortable in the hand, work well, and make a good choice even as a more portable tool to carry away from the workbench, or to have as a spare.

Not too long ago beginners were recommended to buy a cheap soldering iron (maybe with dimmer-style power control, if feeling fancy) when they get started, and upgrade to better soldering stations if they continue with the hobby. Nowadays $30 and some change gets you a soldering station with digital control and a reflow station in the same kit? That's an awesome way to start the journey to the wonderful land of electronics. I just wish my reflow station had a wall mounting option :P

So jealous, my first soldering iron was $40 and had no temp control!

I have a standalone hot air station and I wish it came with a metal blast shield so that the gun can cool down into that instead of peeling the paint on my drywall lol

I learned the ropes with the hot air station on the job, learning all the various items that shrink or start smoking in the air stream before I had one at home so I haven't melted anything unintended...yet

This station appears to work exactly the same as all the cheaper ones available from Ali-Express and other like sites. It is nice to see it in a compact form factor. I believe they have micro-controller in all of them that takes care of the work. Can you maybe do a tear-down of this one so we can see how the insides work?

I really dig the hot air gun with auto shut-off. I just got into electronics and circuitry a few years ago and bought the cheapest little AC iron kit off Amazon, which has worked great, but as I started doing more projects I kind of wanted something better. Had been eyeing the TS-100 for a while, but still a little too expensive for me. Found out about the Pinecil and was lucky enough that it was in stock when I checked! Can't be beat for $25.... I still can't believe how affordable they are. It's a real champ. I run it off a big USB battery bank using USB-C. As for hot air... well.... lol. Using a little hobby heat gun, but only ever use it for heat shrink. Works for me right now, though. I think if I'd bought a little station like this a few years ago I would have been better off in the long run, though. 🤔

My first hot air attempt was using a big nozzle paint stripper style - it worked, but it also heated up about a 2 inch diameter of components that all slid around when I tried to work with the board. Then I bought my first real hot air station.

@@GadgetReboot Oh wow! I have a proper heat gun I use in the garage and for bending tubes for PC water cooling. I can't imagine trying to use it for SMD stuff. haha! But hey, we use what we have at the time. :D

Nice little review! With these things it's always the question how long they last. Maybe you can do some kind of second follow-up after a couple of months?

Yeah I'm surprised my other primary soldering/hot air unit (Aoyue 888A) is still running fine after 3 years and I haven't had to replace any heating elements like I thought I might. So I'll be sure to keep an eye on how this 8898 holds up. But I really need to get an iron stand for it.

@@GadgetReboot I think I have my Aoyue 936 now for like 10 years or so? LOL It's kind of funny and ironic, because at my work we have the most amazing JBC stuff. Can't say I see a major difference. It's just more like luxury than anything else. You can buy pretty decent and cheap iron stands on banggood/aliexpress. In your case I would just ask banggood ;) There is a solder station model almost identical to this one, were they have the (spring type) stand mounted on the left side.

Can you try pressing the set button and hold to see if it is able to set the flow level from 1-10?

Man, can i ask what soldering tips are compatible?

it seems hard to find information but it looks like Hakko T 18. I measured one of mine and the outside diameter is 0.25 inches, the inside diameter is 0.15 inches that slides over the heating element and I put something down inside and it goes in about 1 inch

I saw other video reviews also for this station but the air flow was between 01 min. to 10 max i don know if its an issue or smth but mine is 05 min. like yours

If the heat is 300c or greater 5 is minimum speed. You can only use low fan speed on lower range temp

they made it like that for sake of a safety measure in order to prevent air gun from burning. + also it allowed them to cut costs and assemble this station with weaker components.
