Oh my God! You’ve got to let the chickens back up at least after 6 seconds in order to breath. You can put her back upside down gently but chickens cannot breathe upside down like that when things are coming out. You could tell she was trying to come back up for air…
Take it from someone with many years of experience. This chicken has a distended, impacted crop. The fluid that you are squeezing out, is fluid that is trapped in the impacted material ( grass, seed, all sorts of fibrous material. You will need to cut open thr crop, about 1.5" through skin and CAREFULLY into crop and CAREFULLY remove material with blunt tweezers. Then, clean wound and stitch back up. This chicken in extremely distended and needs the crop emptied very soon, or it's toes up for the poor fella.
Hold two middle fingers between the legs and it won't be so hard on the bird's joints. Holding it upside down for too long as well. You don't want to aspirate liquid into the lungs. Get some docusate sodium (crop bound capsules) and give the bird one with 10cc of water down the throat after puking up that junk. Medistatin in the water helps too.
Where can you get crop bound capsules? My chicken is lethargic won’t eat won’t drink her crop is hard as a rock all she does is keep to herself while the other chickens are active
You're welcome. Someone taught me too. Colace is the brand name for docusate sodium (crop bound capsules) at the drug stores. I give 2 -50mg caps and make sure they are drinking. Use a syringe to get water down the throat if you have to. Problem with crop bound is sometimes it is intestinal. Like enteritis, and if the bird gets too sick or gets dehydrated, it is in the danger zone.
Actually if you catch the Crop problem early don't need surgery just have to massage it like he does it ,but the best thing is drank her a mixture of worm salty water and vegetable oil and then massage it.Trust me I've seen my Granny do it 100s of times when I was a child she had 200 chix and 200 geese Cheers
In all these "emptying the crop" videos where they hold the chicken upside down to empty the crop, the only thing I see coming out is liquid. The liquid is not what is impacting the crop. Its the solids, and I never see solids come out, so can not see the benefit of this method. In fact, when the crop is impacted, the only source of nutrition for the chicken is the nutrients contained in the liquid since the nutrition in the solid materials is not being processed.
Hi there JD. I have a really lethargic hen and there is a really big, soft mass below it's throat. I found your video and did the same thing with the same results. Did your chicken get better? Thanks for the advice. I guess it's all part of the learning curve!
You need to learn to raise your chicken up every 15-20 seconds. And you don't have to squeeze the crop just massage it! I am surprised it didn't die while you we're filming. Horrible !!
this is not how you do it it's needs to be done gently and over a few days. she died because you done it with great force and the water went in her lungs if i was you i would remove this vid
The grass and muck need to be cut out. It's a huge blockage that won't be cleared my doing that. Best to call a vet before doing something u have read off the internet.
Thanks JD, I'm grateful for this advice; I'll have my hen put down at the vet's tomorrow. It seems there's really no cure for this and it's due to an underlying condition so it will recur.
Oh no! My chicken has a swollen crop. I dont know what i can do besides massage it a few times a day. She's always hungry! I hope it passes soon, im afraid she's a gonner! This video wasn't helpful btw... I was about to follow by example before i started reading the comments! Jesus!
i urge others to REPORT THIS VIDEO for harmful dangerous acts. This resulted in a dead hen. I have years of training in animal medicine and husbandry. This is animal cruelty.

It's incredibly easy to judge we're all learning and unfortunately sometimes that means doing the wrong things first. Some of us can't afford to take every sick chicken to the vet. I have 60 Birds if I did that I would be in trouble every time one of them got sick or had a problem everything I've learned I've learned from trial and error it's easy to judge someone behind a computer
Don't let it be true She claims to have years of experience, the owner of the hen in the video verified the hen died three days later, and numerous others have criticized this video for poor technique, primarily because he does not appear to allow the hen time to breathe and because he is holding her incorrectly. So it would seem she has a point and is not spreading false information. Whether this is animal cruelty or just someone trying to help an animal but using a bad technique is a matter of opinion. I give this man the benefit of the doubt because he genuinely was trying to help and thought he was doing it right, and has acknowledged that he knows better now and has learned how to help his animals properly.

Did your hen end up being okay? I read that for this type of problem, also known as sour crop, you can turn the bird upside down and massage the crop and a bunch of fluid will come out, which will help clear the blockage. My hen has a similar but different problem of an impacted crop, I believe. Her crop is very large and very hard. I am trying to figure out how to treat that. I think I'm going to try giving her some water and massaging the crop. Thanks for the nice video.
@@susie14 impacted crop needs a vet. Hanging them upside down causes her to not breath is another thing. They didn't even get any grass out, only liquid, so the problem is still there.
I have since learned that this method needed some tweaking to say the least. After a long hiatus from raising chickens, I am getting back in the game. I will be posting a follow up video this summer with a safer and also more effective method.

That's how you deal with a sour crop. "When chickens gorge themselves on long, fibrous foods, their crop (and occasionally gizzard) can become blocked. Sometimes this results in an impacted crop, which is a crop that is full of a tangle of fibre that is firm, dry and relatively hard. Sometimes, the bird will drink a lot to try to help pass the blockage....this will result in sour crop, which is a crop full of watery, half-rotten, acidic soup that actually smells worse than it sounds. Sour crop can be helped by holding the bird face-down, at about a 60 degree angle, and massaging the crop towards the throat....the stinky mess should come out like vomit, and reduce the swelling." I just dealt with a 21 week old chicken who had an impacted crop. Thank God giving her mineral oil and massage worked at softening it up and she pooped it all out that night. What I'm saying is that this person is not holding the chicken at a 60 degree angle, she is totally upside down. Also he is not giving her a break to breath so she is more than likely getting it in her breathing pipe and lungs. Also it looks very rough how he is handling her. He stated she died a few days later. Poor chicken.:(
Since there are millions of chickens and we are owners of several, this is NOT terrible, it's showing us how to properly empty the hen's crop. If not emptied, she'd die, which is much more terrible than vomiting.
Deanna Crownover My vet said it is very stressful on the chicken and this guy is not even letting her breath by only doing it for a short time ( 10-15 secs) and then bringing her up right. Also this chicken died three days later.

Not surprised. Very sad. You hung her upside down for too long and she couldn’t breathe. And she got fluid in her lungs because her neck wasn’t extended to get all the fluid out. Why do you still have this terrible video up on YT? It’s not helpful to anyone, doesn’t even include useful info, actually spreading bad/wrong advice. Could’ve given that poor girl a break from hanging upside down to let her breathe. Could’ve GENTLY massaged the crop instead of squeezing it really hard. Terrible.
JD, thanks for telling us how it went. You did your best. Despite all of our best efforts, our chickens more often than not die. Even the vets can’t save them and most of us can’t afford it anyway.
