Again, great video and thanks. I finally did it to my DRZ. I primarily used this video. No problems! It was a pain to take out and out back the carb though. The only thing slightly different from the instructions and this is when you put the needle assembly back in the carb, you say to drop it in and the instructions say to press it in. Maybe either way is fine? I pressed mine in and twisted a little to get it to seat. There is not much play in the needle. Regardless, I love the results. Much more power and the throttle response is better.
Thank you for this video. I almost sent my bike to a shop to get this done but your video gave me the confidence to do it myself. Knocked it out today following your video and bike is running perfectly. Thanks.
I just did mine because your video was very clear. First time ever messing with a carburetor. It was a pain in the ass getting the carb off and on the bike. Especially the throttle cables, the actual jetting of the carb was easy though. My drill bit pulled the plug out without a metal screw as well. The bit started biting hard and it just pulled out. Great video, thanks. Wouldn’t have done it without your help!
Best jetting video on a drz400 carb!!! All others are trash lol. Thanks for takimg the time to set up your camera and make sure you got all the right angles for the process!! That shit takes hella time to just shoot the video let alone edit it for the quickest most detailed carb jetting tutorial!!! Thanks man for the help!! Saved me hella money!!!!
Hell yea. Glad to help someone out there. I tried to find a good video, and I didn’t like them. Or they skipped the hard parts. So I made my own. Glad to help! 💪🏼
Hey Link, chimming in here just to say a heart felt THANK YOU. Just completed 3X3 parts 1 & 2 (Air Box & JD Jetting) with stock exhaust. 110 mile ride along the chilly NorCal coast this morning and in short “IT’S AWESOME!!!” The motor runs smoother, much better throttle response, and serious increase of HP punch that it definitely did not have before. Thank you, thank you and thank you for your videos. It’s not an easy mechanical endeavor, but thanks to your sharing your videos, you made it much easier. And man O man, worth it! Be well and Happy Holidays Bro!
Hell yea!!!!! Sounds like that ride was nice! I appreciate you guys watching and I enjoy helping. That’s why I make the videos. I always hated the unrealistic videos that never actually helped me. That’s why I make them now. Be safe out there. Many more vids to come.!
@novatodave8960 hey when you did this did you follow the kit for the stock exhaust? I just put the kit in today and it almost feels like it bogging a bit when getting into it, just curious
@@xWLSx phase 1, I did the jet kit and the 3“ x 3“ cut out in the airbox and added the KNM filter. Phase 2 I installed the full Yoshira exhaust and rejected per the JD instructions. Ran solid with phase 1, ran really well with phase 2 mods! did you do the airbox cut out? the motor gots to breathe bro?
@@novatodave8960 fo sho did cut out the 3x3 and jetted to stock exhaust recommendations, she just falling on her face for a split second past half throttle pulls, so instead of swapping the jet up, I went ahead and got the full delkavic (same one link had on his) And I’ll just do both together this go round. Thanks for responding!
@@xWLSx Yo bro, the JD kit should work flawless, rock solid with no split second lags, nothing but SMOOTH. You may want to check your work? maybe needle setting is a notch off? leak in the boot, lots of hoses to reconnect to the carb I recall You can also call JD, they are super helpful on the phone. That delkavic is badass and the 3X3 will be complete. Hope this helps, keep the rubber side down!
I just did this mod. A few things I dealt with. The carb was not easy to remove and re-install. If I do more mods and have to re-jet I will loosen the clamps and rotate the carb to make the changes without removing it. When I drilled out the plug mine started spinning when the bit was trying to break through the final bit. Still was able to remove it though. Also when I changed the main jet the piece below loosened and I had to hold it with a wrench to loosen the jet. Lastly I thought I would wait to do the 3x3 mod on the airbox. After the jet change I had a bad stumble when hitting full throttle in top gear from 55 M.P.H. I took the access panel off for the air filter and it eliminated the stumble, so I went ahead and did the 3x3 mod and it cured the problem. Love your videos and planning a lot of the same mods as you have done.
Man!!!!!! Well hopefully the video helped. I have heard others had to hold that little nut below the main jet, but mine broke free without it. Glad you’re all good now! Not sure if you’ve seen recent videos, but it’s progressed quite a bit since this video. Thanks for watching I appreciate it. And I thanks for leaving the comment for what others could potentially expect.
Link thanks for the vid. Just installed my JD kit on the '23 DRZ and wow. Took some time for the entire carb operation but your vid and the steps shown helped a lot. Feels like a new bike now.
Very helpful. I just installed the JD kit in my '19 SM. Whie the supplied instructions were good; I wasn't sure if the needle placement was counted from the top or bottom. Thanks for clearing this up.
Great camera angles and close up shots! This video is such a great example of how these sort of things should be done instead of someone holding the camera 10' away and vaguely gesturing to something. Well done! Small little detail at 9:51. There's a post that points down in the video (up when it's installed on the bike) on the throttle stop screw holder that should be inserted into the space just to the right of the screw that holds it on. It'll help keep your throttle stop from rotating during use. You can see how it was originally at 6:34. Seriously, though. Great video!
Thank you!!!!!!! I searched for something like this when I did mine. And all I found was shit you couldn’t see. Or the hard parts like the drilling of the brass bushing, removed. So I decided to make my own. I appreciate you commenting. Hope I help someone out there! Lots of other DRZ vids on the channel!
Hello from Idaho. Very nicely done video, thank you much. I’m looking at getting a used DRZ here real soon, so this is something I might end up needing to do. I like the way you took your time and were careful showing finesse. I can see how it’s one of those things you don’t want to rush. One mistake and then you have a much bigger problem. You mentioned those screws several times, so I fully expected one was going to strip lol. Nice job getting them out. Maybe the impact driver is the determining factor there. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to cut a slot in a screw with my Dremel heh. I used to race, radio controlled cars, and the screws under the chassis we’re always getting destroyed.
First of all, thanks for watching! 2nd, those are JIS screws. (Japanese Industry Standard) you can get a good set of screw drivers pretty inexpensive. Vessel makes some good ones. Well if you get a DRZ I have about every video you can think of on my channel. Enjoy!
Picked up a DRZ yesterday, mint condition so now its time to change that😂 Will order a JD kit and do the 3x3 mod. Can you specify abit more where you felt a change in power? THANK YOU for your time on these videos.
Well done video here, so good I grabbed it in case I buy a carb'd bike.... lol, it's very straight forward & your camera work was really good to help us shade-tree mechanics out there?! Like I don't even have a bike & I had to sub up & clang da bell. Thanks for a well made video. peace
Yeah Link, it was so well done I grabbed it so I can help anyone else dealing w/ a carb related issue....lol, since I've been looking at the bikes listed on the KiT, it was a double for me. If I get either one it's the same carb & fix. That was a bonus seeing it was the same for two different bikes I'm considering but I'm certain you helped many with more than your mechanical ability, the video ability brought it all home to any/all who watched this. TY peace
Awesome video brother thanks for taking the time to show us... You know what I was thinking when you were drilling out that screw plug I may not be a bad idea to get a scoring tool and where the factory setting is maybe put a dot of nail polish on the screw on one side and a scoring tool to Mark where it was from factory you just need to remember that you went to turns so two turns backwards but then you can still put it back in the same spot if need be...
For sure. Not a bad idea at all. Thank you for watching. Not sure if you’ve seen any other vids. But I have a ton since this. Just completed a FCR39mm carb install. (Vid. It released yet) but much more to come. 💪🏼
This video was super helpful and got me thru the install without any issues. Once it's running, it idles strong, runs great and and starts instantly when warm, however, the first cold start chugs and chugs on the battery and takes forever to fire. Any advice would be helpful!
Awesome video! I just traded an older Goldwing to a friend for his 2015 DRZ400SM he stopped riding a few years ago and let it sit. He already had done this jetting along with the 3x3 and MRD exhaust. I drained all the old gas and put fresh in with a little seafoam and the bike started up and idles fine. When I took it for a short ride I noticed it will pull strong but randomly faceplants like the ignition was cut off for a second them picks right back up. I thought I was hitting rev limiter at first until it picked back up and continued to accelerate, any ideas what could be going on? Like I mentioned before, the bike hand't been ridden or even started in 2+ years until I got it but overall it looks new and only has 1,700 miles on it. I did change all the fluids and what not before even trying to start it.
@linksgarage1985 any thoughts on what the issue could be? As you probably saw from my comments on the one guys post, I know cars but not too familiar with carbs and bikes lol
Is it like it’s spark related? Or fuel related? Is the tank clean? Any chance you had some crap getting the main jet under load? Sounds silly, but you could also check your kick stand switch. If the kick stand comes down for even a second, it’ll cut it.
Awesome video, about to do one on my SM as well. I’ve noticed a lot of people saying the 170 was to big for the bike even with a full exhaust and 3x3. Did you leave the 170 in, or did you end up having to change out the main jet for something else?
When taking off the brass cap I got lucky and didn't have to use a wood screw to get out. The drill bit really bit into the brass and I just pulled on the drill. It was actually stock on the drill and had to use pliers to get it out.
So as I watch this(well done video) I can't help but thinking that the only reason they went w/ the particular jets/misc within this bike has to do with Emission Standards(Kali)? I can't see putting these in straight from the factory as any more expensive to do which leaves us w/ why is the carb & air so restricted = Air Quality BS. Thanks for the FiX
Hey bud I just got my jet kit. I just have an exhaust right now. Should I do anything to the airbox or no? I've heard it can destroy your bottom end torque. It's so much info out there idk what to believe lol
Great video ! Could you post a picture of the instructions options for the deferent elevations or mods ? We can only see the right side on your video . Thank you !
Hands down the BEST jetting video out there, I am a fan and a new subscriber. One question, after you drilled out the fuel screw section and did the turns, what happens if you do not go halfway back after the 2 full turns? Again, thanks for making this video and your others, a HUGE help! Dave
Hey, that’s why I make these videos. To actually help! And I’m not sure on the fuel screw turn. That’s what they recommended. I would guess if you only backed it out 2 turns, it would run slightly leaner. I could be wrong. Thanks for watching I appreciate it! 💪🏼 many many more DRZ vids on the channel. Like 30 more lol
Thanks my man! Did you lose a little top speed after the mods were placed? I lost a few mph but now have a lot of low end torque. Thanks again brotha, you ROCK!
I’m good to follow you to the t with the jets and fuel screw right? Same exhaust when you did this (delkavic 8” full system) 3by3, standard fuel petcock and am under 4000ft in elevation
Honestly, I’m not sure on the MPG. I ride pretty aggressively. And still get over 50 probably. And it made a noticeable difference. I mean, if doesn’t transform it into a CR500R or anything. But it wakes it up.
So I’m not too sure what I did or didn’t do wrong . You did a great explanation of how to execute and I did everything as explained however I had to use the choke to turn it on and for like 2 minutes it was just turning over and once it turned on it idled nice then heated up and when I went to give it gas it took a second to get back to idle and after a minute it died on me not sure what’s going on or what I might’ve done wrong
Thank you for watching! No issues at all. It’s running fantastic. The jet kit, Delkevic and the 3x3 airbox really woke it up. Night and day difference from stock.
@@linksgarage1985 Awesome, I’m waiting on the jet kit to arrive. Pretty impressed with the Delkevic exhaust. Your video on the kit install is top shelf. Thanks for making it.
I just did each of these mods, 3x3 air box mod, JD jetting kit, and the exact exhaust you have. Bikes struggling to stay running, messed with the fuel screw for quite a while and couldn’t figure out for the life of me, i live in MN, under 1000 ft elevation and did the exact setup you did for the jet kit. And i can’t get it to run it idles rough and just seems really OFF. Any tips? I’m super let down that i couldn’t get it perfect and be able to rip it.
@@linksgarage1985 yes it’s hooked up and nothing is pinched. i adjusted it now it’s just running great when it’s cold and when it becomes warm it dies and runs bad.
Hey I pulled out my needle and I didn't have that tiny spring. Could it have flown off when I pulled the white thing out? Do I need that part? Or is there a chance I didn't have it to begin with
Damn dude you’re lucky you got those screws out without stripping them. I was able to get two out and stripped the other two. I had to break out the Dremel.
By any chance do you know where I can buy a new plastic kit that is factory color (black) most of the aftermarket kits have a very light black color. Is there a way I can buy plastics from Suzuki?
I recently installed JD jet kit with exhaust and 3x3 mod. For some reason it bogs and hesitates at high speeds like 65 and up. Do you have any idea what it could be? I did the exact same thing you did in the video but just trying to get some info, thanks in advance
I installed my RS-2 Yoshi yesterday. It pops on Decel. Does yours and is this normal or is it running too lean? I personally think that some popping is okay, but wanted to get your thoughts. I am going to do the 3x3 and JD Jet kit this weekend.
@@sharpbj The Yoshi is sweet! And a little popping is normal. But yes. Mine popped a bunch on deceleration. After the jet and 3x3 it cut wayyyyyy down. But yes, pipe only, lean popping. Thanks for watching. I appreciate it!
@@linksgarage1985 just finished 3x3 and JD jet kit install. Pops on decel worse, but no hiccups in power. Also won't run on On..have to keep it on fill. Not sure on that one as vacuum hose is where it is supposed to be,
Tip won’t do Anything really. You could remove the snorkel at minimum. But if it’s jetted, I would open carb and validate. And do a 3x3 and an exhaust.
@@linksgarage1985 was going to open it up and see what setups in there, previous owner gave me the rest of the parts that came with kit. I see that the setup it's supposed to have the parts are missing from baggie so I'm assuming its in there. Will probably end up doing 3x3 this weekend anyway. Thanks for reply dude, videos are rockin 🤘
@@linksgarage1985 do you know wat is the brand of the stock carburetor for the drz cuz I see the kit comes depending on the carburetor not sure which 2 buy
@@linksgarage1985I adjusted the idle quite a bit and it never made much of a difference I’m running a delkavic that I bought used and I’m thinking I need to upgrade to a better exhaust to run the 170 jet
I know this video is kinda old, but im doing this on my 2022 right now. I plan on doing 3x3 and a rejet only is this stage one jets or stage 2 and add the exhaust later? Im opening the carb anyway to clean because it was sitting for a while.
@@xWLSx I would recommend doing all three at once. With jetting and an airbox mod you will not see the benefits if you do not do the exhaust. Just my opinion.
@@linksgarage1985 im only delayed from manufacturing for exhaust, jets will be here tomorrow im just 3 weeks out until I see the exhaust, I’ve done a thing and already made my hole. Didn’t expect to be out of commission but if jets will even out running lean I’m so much more okay with not noticing a difference until exhaust arrives vs running lean.
Okay so I did a 3x3/ JD jet kit, and added the 8” delkavic but it still isn’t running right, it bogs heavy & when I try and blip the throttle she shuts off. Any suggestions
@@linksgarage1985it seems to ride fine and gets up to speed no problem but when I’m going slow or pulling off from a stop sign or light and give her some gas there comes the bog and sometimes shuts off
@@linksgarage1985 Yeah I’m pretty sure everything is hooked back up properly ima go outside & mess with it tomorrow I was thinking it might be something with the fuel screw maybe it was running to lean. Idk man this thing is kicking my ass lmao just trying to avoid taking the dang carb back off 😂
@@linksgarage1985 yes sir even took the carb back off and double checced and watch this video step by step. But ima try and make sure everything is hooked properly & mess with the fuel screw. Is there any thing else you recommend I might need to check I wish I could post a video to show you what it’s going. It just bogs when I’m pulling off unless I hand throttle down a little & if I blip it to pop a wheelie in second she bogs bad & also pops loud af
@@linksgarage1985 yeah i wish i was kidding lol. i just kept the long boi spring that was supposed to be there and it works amazing now post rebuild. Whoever rebuilt it last i guess put two in there for some reason lol
I wouldn't worry unless it's Really bad or frequent.....it doesn't necessarily mean it's tuned bad, the Exhaust could be too aggressively Open for the jetting....if it's missing a silencer or spark arrestor, that can cause Popping. If it's doing it after a hard acceleration, I wouldn't worry about it.....if it's doing it A Lot after low or medium throttle, then something might need to be checked. But if you already jetted the bike....there's NO possible way it's Lean as long as you attached all hoses and airbox is tightly sealed.....you can check your spark plugs to see what they look like....plugs never lie.
It’s not to remind me where I live. It’s to serve as a constant reminder of the men and women who served to protect what we all know and love. Catch up on videos. I have about 20 more now. 🇺🇸💪🏼🇺🇸. Thanks for watching!
