This year (2017) Finland celebrates its first centenary. To honour this grand occasion, together with Finnish-
Dutch designer duo visual artist Liisa Aholainen and Dutch architect and lighting designer Bas Gremmen
TAIKA has designed a spectacle called 100 Finnish Summers, consisting of a concert and an art
exhibition. The event is part of ‘Suomi 100 Maailmalla - Finland 100 Worldwide’ project, which
encourages and supports “expatriate Finnish organisations and communities to organise events related
to the centenary of Finland’s independence and to provide information on Finland in their own
The concert program is varied, with a focus on music written by Finnish composers: Mia Makaroff,
Jarkko Yli-Annala, and Soila Sariola, to name a few of them. The concert draws its inspiration from
Finnish folklore. The audience will be pampered with songs about nature, about love and longing, and
even songs composed around the verses of Finland’s national epic story, Kalevala.
The event will be hosted at a very special location, namely at the inspiring Korzo theatre in the old city
centre of The Hague. Korzo has been a podium for different varieties of performing arts for more than
thirty years. It is known for its support for young talent, and it is one of the hotspots for international
artists to perform in The Hague. www.korzo.nl/en/productions/taika
About TAIKA:
Finnish Female Choir TAIKA (meaning: magic, charm, hex and conjuration) is a Finnish choir based in The
Hague, the Netherlands. It was founded in 2012 by its conductor Master of Music Karla-Maria
Toiviainen. All the choir members are Finnish women living in different parts of the Netherlands. In a
short time, the choir has achieved a valuable role in the Finnish community in The Netherlands.
The choir has a wide repertoire, ranging from folk to pop, with an emphasis on Finnish female choral
music. However, the choir enthusiastically performs songs from all around the world. The choir has been
applauded for its balanced and full-bodied sound.
Taika has weekly rehearsals, and hosts its own concerts twice a year - in the spring/summer and at
Christmas time. Taika also performs in a wide range of events hosted by businesses and organizations.
Examples of these are the annual expat event “Feel at home in The Hague”, where Taika has performed
already twice. Similarly, Taika has performed at the Independence Day dinner hosted by the Finnish-
Dutch chamber of commerce, as well as at many other different private gatherings.
