Lakers president and co-owner Jeanie Buss talks about the relationship with her father, Jerry Buss, and her upbringing alongside Magic Johnson and the ‘Showtime’ Lakers. (Producer/Editor)
10 titles in 34 years. Only missed the playoffs twice in that time frame. Absolutely the greatest team sports owner of my lifetime and probably always will be.
@@qs4177 Dr. Buss must have been one of the best owners to play for. We've been blessed like that here in Pittsburgh with the Rooney family, and Mario Lemieux. And, oh yeah, Bob Nutting, too......NOT. Nutting sucks.
@@slauzon01 So much so, Bird and Magic should be the NBA symbol. They changed college, the NBA, ushered in-"Making others around him better". The NBA playoffs were on tape delay when they arrived. I only wonder how it would've turned out if they were drafted by other teams, including reversing theirs.
@@markjackson6134 I slightly disagree. We should have a 5 leaft clover for the NBA logo. 5 legends, all. 5 heads in that 5-leaf clover? MJ and MJ, Bird, Russell, and last but not least, in the middle, no one but Red Auerbach.
Dr Buss was a special dude you could just tell by looking him. What a great Dad. I loved those 80’s Lakers teams Kareem Magic Jamal Wilkes Worthy Norm Nixon Super Cooooooper. Showtime
The ol Coop a loop I Loved Showtime I love Magic a walking highlight reel Kareem a special time! I teared up watching Kobe ask for a moment of silence! Chick let’s put it in the Refrigerator I will never ever forget them!!!!
What a treasured life. No question that Mr Buss was the greatest owner ever. He got what life and the joy of life is all about. That kind of joy is priceless. I met Magic in 1981 and he is down to earth.
@@davidluck3539 Actually no. Only medical doctors are normally called Dr. even when not on a job concerning their doctorate. Jerry Buss PhD was not doing chemistry as the owner of the Lakers. He taught chemistry at Cal State Long Beach before I went there in the 70's. I took two classes in chem but he was gone by then. When he was teaching chem, then he would properly be called Dr Buss. Not as a team owner. Yes I know its popular to call him Dr. Buss but isn't right to do so.
As someone who moved from San Francisco to OC and became a Lakers fan while remaining a 49ero faithful, it was a great time to be fan. Dr Buss and Eddie D helped make those teams top shelf for decades. Great owners.
Thank you JB for making us laker fans feel the love and compassion for the purple and gold. Usually team owners are asses but Dr Buss and his daughter kept it real and never put the fans to the side. True laker nation #goldarmor#
Yes, but "daughter" brought a real ass to LA. It was so satisfying to see LeDiva and the Lakers crash and burn this season.....and to watch him blame it on everybody but himself.
He seems to be the best owner of any sport ever. I'm from the east coast and I didn't know as much about him as I could have but the more I learned the more I like him and respect him.
As a Boston born Celtic fan I can honestly say that I have so much respect for the Lakers and the Buss family. You have to have respect for your enemy, and in a way you even have to love them. Lakers vs Celtics forever. The greatest robbery in the history of organized sport. Yes even greater than Red Sox Yankees. I may hate the Lakers when we play them, but I never hate the players. Okay, I was close with Ron Artest, but other than World be Free, I ain't got nothing but love for ya and the epic memories! And a bit of respect for Ron. 😊 Go Green!
As a Lakers fan, it takes me time to appreciate the Celtics, lol, like the late-90’s to appreciate Bird. Growing up Boston was the enemy, and green was the worst color. But over time you learn about Bill Russell who seems like the most amazing person, Bird who was grit personified, and even the Big 3 team. But Boston always found a way to win, which I appreciate. Just don’t make me say anything nice about Tatum and Brown right now, they can be the ones to give Boston a title and break the tie!
There will never be another team like SHOW TIME. When they took the court magic was in the air. My favorite player of all time is Mr. Earvin Johnson, it was really like watching a magic show when that Lakers team took the court.
The bulls is the greatest team to me micheal jordan took a franchise that was never a winning culture and won 6 titles in 8 years that’s amazing and they beat magic and Kareem for his first title 4 1 I was too hound to watch magic but my mom and grandma loved magic and Kareem and James worthy
@@edwinhooks Jordan! Only won..when tge celtics n pistons..n lakers got old. When those great crltucs teams were around..tge bulls didn't win once..get it straight..
I'm just a little older than you, I'm guessing. Not a Lakers fan, but Kareem was always my favorite player, going all the way back to his days as Lew Alcindor at UCLA.
Jeanie is legendary like her dad and all of the Lakers past, present, and future....Dr. Jerry Buss raised her well. Go Jeanie lead Lakers back to the championship days...
I don't think she's legendary anymore.....not after bringing the LeDiva Circus to town. And please, do NOT start about rings.....they didn't win an NBA title. That was the Disney Bubble Tournament Championship.
Great piece! Dr. Buss helped create a vision for the Lakers and he achieved that vision! So many great memories from the time he bought the team until now. There's something to be said about the Southern California image that fits so well with the Showtime Lakers. There was nothing better than those summers during the 80's when the Lakers were making that playoff push. Great times! Thanks Dr. Buss!
What a beautiful Woman, what a Wonderful daughter, what great female owner she is but Most important what a nice Woman. I am proud to be a Lakers Fan. Jerry Buss was a great Person
Dr, buss the best owner in sports ,loved his players ,the fans and the city of L,A . HE CARED about winning and the image of the Lakers, the forum was not just a arena but also a place to get away ,
It was a special time and I'm privileged to be growing up at the same time great memories I will never forget them because they were my memories what a time that was very special also with chick hearn on the mic thank you very much Jeannie
YT showed this today only. I am thankfull for what father and daughter have done and been doing for the Lakers fans. Magic Johnson's the reason I wanted start learn how to play ball, in the first place. Now I shall ask Miss JB to take back the squad from every other business ineterst, hire athletse who are able to play, keep the few ones good already in the room and waive who does not now how to play. Lets start over. A three years project.
BEST OWNER IN THE GAME! HE WAS ALWAYS LOOKING OUT FOR HIS GUYS THAT HELPED HIM OUT. Like MJ Said he looked out for him outside of the Game.... Billionare Boys Club!!
Very few people on this planet has had a better life than Dr. Jerry Buss. 1. Established credibility for himself as a PhD in Chemistry 2. Highly successful real estate owner 3. As the owner of Lakers he was one of biggest people in Los Angeles for many years. Friends to athletics, celebrities, politicians, businessmen, etc. 4. Tremendous success with the Lakers. From Kareem and Magic to Shaq and Kobe. Wow. 5. Had a great deal of fun with the women 6. Raised a daughter Jennie Buss who is a true winner.
I wish Jennie Buss would declare a moratorium on trading any more first round draft picks for players that are injury prone or past their prime. The rest of the league has 1st round draft talent and these teams like Memphis, Phoenix, and Minnesota are unceremoniously punking the Lakers. These teams had patience with their players and are now dominating the league.
I think you need to take that up with LeDiva....he is, after all, the REAL GM of the team. Frankly, I'm hoping the rest of the league avoids the Lakers like the plague this off-season. That way, they can spend NEXT year in Salary Cap Hell, too. I hope Jeanie thinks she got a good return on her moves by winning the Disney Bubble Tournament Championship. I wonder how many face palms her boyfriend Phil did when he saw that signing?
I watched winning time well done, I know there fact and fiction, but I admired the doctor and the Lakers. All players had a story, it shows dreams come true with hard work.
Being from South Carolina, growin up in the 80's I was actually a fan of Dr. J and the Sixers but my mom would buy me Lakers t-shirts now and then. She wasn't even a fan of sports either but maybe she just defaulted to them because of how popular they were during that time I don't know but it rubbed off. I live in Southern California now and have been to a lot of Laker games and yeah, it's pretty awesome walking into Staples or Crypto whatever it's called now and just sitting down and enjoying watching Dr. Buss's team...
She is truly the Laker Fan and Treats the Team as if it were her own family and children.. She is Very Down to Earth Women, That has the Looks and the Money and Does not Care for the showoff Drama... She Puts the Team First!!!
What proof do u have of that?? ....she doesnt come off as one that just sleeos with a bunch of dudes cause there famous and have money. Shes down to earth and didnt need money back then.
1:50 Oh so thats why the named the street Kareem's Court behind the great western forum. I still have pictures with Magic Johnson, Kareem, James Worthy from when they won the 88 finals.
The NBA should return to having draftees at home instead of at the draft event as it really isn’t that interesting watching the players walk onto a stage just to put on a hat and shake hands with the commissioner. It’s way more fun watching the players family around them and reacting to them being selected and drafted by a NBA team. I love when the family is there to celebrate especially the later picks when the players anxiety reach a boiling point and they finally are selected and relieved and all fheir emotions pour out with their loved ones
I love the Boogie Nights vibe of Winning Time. John c Riley aka Rick Rothchild is a good choice to play Jerry Buss. It is exaggerated yet I love it. Jerry West is a nut.
I was recommended to this page after the recent news of Magic Johnson and coach Luke Walton stepping down. I wonder how Jeanie Buss will handle the LA Lakers after the latest fallout?
If Winning Time is indicative of who Dr Buss was as an owner then he could of owned my teams anytime. He like Steinbrenner bought low, GS paid $10M for the Yankees in 74, and Buss paid $18M for LA in 1979 and now their teams are worth billions. They knew you had to spend money to win and the rest would take care of itself.
1:41 - 2:22 is what I really felt. The genuine humility and excitement they had as a family almost allows me to understand how they felt as owners of those franchises and arena.
