I would just like to say "thank you" for this video! My '96 Cherokee Classic is approaching 200k miles, and I had been dreading (but needing) to do this very thing for a while. I consider myself pretty mechanically inclined, but without your video I don't think I could have done it. +1 on the Felpro gasket. A word of note to folks who still may have clearance issues with their Jeep on jack stands (I did): you can also put a jack under your transmission, take the nuts off the four studs holding your transmission mount to your cross member, and jack the engine/transmission up a couple inches to gain some clearance. Again: THANK YOU!

I'm doing an '04 Wrangler. Raising it by the bumper leaves enough room to remove the pan without dropping front diff. The '04 takes a little different seal in that it doesn't have the extra edges on the half that fits in the main bearing cap - both top and bottom halves are the same.

correct, newer models have just the half moon shape seal. without the wings. the process is the same, minus the support bracket you have to remove

Factory service manual procedure has you remove the exhaust pipe and lift front end. Otherwise, oil pan isnt coming off. Also, use anerobic gasket maker on rear main seal corners, and FSM also recommends using rtv at front and back corners of oilpan gasket.
@KSuspension
@KSuspension 5 лет назад
We’ve never removed an exhaust pipe to drop an oil pan. That said, there’s many repairs on all vehicles that the FSM states to do a certain way, but it’s not needed

I would like to try and help a little by giving people some info on a couple of things I found out when I performed this task on my 2000 Jeep Wrangler TJ Sahara. (Not a Cherokee) My Wrangler has a 4.0 with a 3-speed automatic transmission. It also has a 4-inch lift kit and 33-inch tires, as well as plenty of other upgrades. 1) You CAN get the oil pan bolts - that are above the starter - out without removing the starter, however, the starter Must be removed to get the oil pan itself out. (2 - 15mm bolts hold the starter in.)2) I don't know if All Wrangler exhaust pipes are run like mine are, but the exhaust pipes on my Jeep run about 2-inches or so below the higher front portion of the oil pan, and about 3-inches or so in front of the rear lower portion, therefore, the oil pan is virtually boxed in and impossible to remove without first disassembling the exhaust system somewhere just after the exhaust manifold and removing it, or, cutting a section of the exhaust pipes out and welding it back in when the task is finished. 3) The 4.0 in 2000 and newer Jeep Wranglers have a different Fel-Pro rear main seal part number than the part number given in the video. This is because in these Jeeps the rear main seal is a little different - both the top and bottom pieces of the seal look the same. (No little end wings on the bottom seal that goes into the main bearing cap.) The Fel-Pro part# for the rear main seal (for 2000 and newer 4.0's) is BS40183. (AutoZone) The part number for the Oil Pan Gasket is the same as the one given in the video.I performed this task on my Jeep in my garage with the Jeep on jack stands, and the front axle was in the Jeep. It probably would have been easier if the front axle was out and the Jeep was on a lift. (like in a garage) Now that I'm finished with this task, I hope I Never have to do this again. Thanks again to KSuspension for posting this video. It probably would have cost me a LOT more to have it done in a shop.

So I did this exact procedure perfectly with felpro gaskets. Used a duralast torque wrench that is relatively new. Followed the torque process in the video. Got it all out back together but the rear main seal leaks. Very small leak from what I can tell so far. The only variation from the way you did it when I did it was I used permatex gasket maker instead of rtv (a virtually nonexistently thin layer) across the whole gasket mating surfaces.. So.. 1 could be the wrench didn't torque to correct spec. 2 could be that I should have used rtv. 3 I screwed the seal up installing it. 4 I should have only put sealant on the outer tabs rather than incredibly thinly across the mating surface of the lower section of the gasket. Could you let me know which of the following are most likely. I felt really good about it. In my opinion it went smooth as could be and I treated it like heart surgery.

I need to replace my rear main also. Wondering if I should replace my oil pump as well since I have 268,000 miles and my oil pressure has read 50 PSI since I've owned the jeep since it had 180,000 miles. My engine has a bit of a knock to it at idle. I've got a 3" lift and big jack stands hoping this will give me enough clearance to pull the pan but if it doesent do you have any recommendations for allowing more clearance ......99 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0 automatic, 4wd. I've had plenty of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot moments fixing my jeep and plan to keep it from becoming Tango Uniform on the trails.
@KSuspension
@KSuspension 6 лет назад
TheAutumnWinter disconnecting the steering components and shocks should drop the axle enough to clear the pan Since you'll have the pan off, it's a good time to do the pump since you're in there And the "knocking" you hear is typical on the 4.0, usually it's a rod knock You'll se much clearer once you remove the pan on what needs attention

Ill be doing this in my garage on a stock 4x4 2000 XJ. Will it be manageable with letting the front axle sag?

I'm concern about oil pan torque specs? I have a 95 XJ high Output 4.0 Is 114/ 156 in.lb. or 84/ 132 in.lb.??

1/4" drive ratchet with extension and socket. 2 finger tight. Don't have to get super technical with it. Just snug them down.

Did you replace your oil pan or just paint the old one red? If so where did you get the red one at?

painted

Can you oil-lubricate that seal to make it slide in easier? Also, how do you know that the gasket channel is clear on that one?
@KSuspension
@KSuspension 7 лет назад
PDXDrumr I've used oil and soap, soap worked the best And once you remove the old gasket, you should be good to go. Shouldn't be anything in the channel. If there is, you'll need to drop the transmission to clean everything out

Great, thanks, I like the soap idea better. Thanks again.

Stupid question can this be done without removing the front axle? I understand it will be a pain in the ass with it there. It’s the middle of winter here and I don’t want to take the axle off
@KSuspension

iphone777 of course, we just happened to have ours off, that’s why we mentioned disconnecting linkages to drop the axle as much as possible to provide enough clearance to drop the Pan Not much extra work

I did it on my 2001 Cherokee 4x4 by letting the axle hang , removing the starter and by disconnecting the motor mounts . Then, I jacked up the motor about 1.5 inches and the pan came out. Also, I removed the transmission inspection cover because that gave me extra room to slide the pan out.
