In the last video I had to pull the transmission, replace the clutch and rear main seal to get the Jeep up and running again. It fortunately a success and 700 miles later the clutch is broken in and its running better than I can remember. Now the final touches with a 30" front drive shaft have been added and I have vibrationless Jeep with no oil leaks for the first time in my ownership.
In this video I show you the main camp gear on the drawer system like the battery, fridge, food storage, stoves, recovery gear and general house keeping. I have skipped on tents and sleep gear but you can see that when i'm out camping.

The jeep looks awesome. You have one of my favorite cherokees. I've also been toying with the idea of a rooftop tent, I like the ones with a hard top I'm just worried about weight up high. I also don't think a normal cherokee roof can handle very much weight long term unless it's reworked or setup well. I know your roof is pretty sturdy after your repairs and I did similar stuff with mine. But a normal cherokee roof probably couldn't handle a lot of weight long term especially driving on bumpy dirt roads. Do you like your MSR shovel? Is it just meant for snow, how sturdy is it? I carry a full size D-handle shovel. It would be nice to have a shovel like yours if they make 2 different ends for it like the flat tip shovel and a pointy shovel. But it's hard to beat a full size D-handle shovel. I like the idea of having a full size shovel that snaps apart and stows away nicely, it would be really nice if you had 2 types of ends for it.
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 2 года назад
Thanks Forrest! Its turned out pretty nice. Always more to do but as it stands its looking and driving good. I do like roof tents despite the gimmick some people see them as. My last one was time consuming to setup and put away and it was also narrow. The benefit was flat ground though, good views and a feeling of security, that's obviously false, but still. This is the one I have been looking at - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RSBjKhIRJW0.html It has clips for the cover instead of a huge zip which I hated. You then just pull a cord and its open with no more to do. The bedding fits inside so its all done and its 49.5kg which is very reasonable for a 140 wide tent. The MSR Shovel is actually very good for a retractable shovel. Its thick and well made. I have used it in the snow a lot and its great in the snow. I have an extension on mine so I can clear under the Jeep better. In mud I have no idea how it performs. I can imagine in sand its fine and in wet loose mud it will be fine but when the mud is hard for trail building it will not be good enough I think.

Thanks mate. It feels better than it did before but its also a reminder that the XJ is really limited on space if you intend on keeping the back seats in. Sometimes I wonder if getting a 4wd van would have been more sensible, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. I guess I've invested too much now and this is what is.

How do you like the 4:88 and what was the break in procedure? Also what rear leaf are you using to support the weight
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 2 года назад
I'm really liking them. Got back a lot more fuel economy and also power with regards to being at the right RPM in the right gear. I ran mine at first on short trips for 15 minutes at a time with full cool downs in-between for the first 100 miles. After that I ran them under 60mph for 500 miles then changed oil and buttoned them up. They broke in fine and seemed to still be going strong. The rear is a 5.5" Rubicon Express leaf pack. Its a stiff pack but with the weight it levels out nice and seems to be comfy.

Hello Mike, from Detroit MI 😎 I am a big fan, I just recently started watching your journey with your Jeep xj. I also have a 1999 Jeep xj, I bought it 12 years from the southern states, so it's still hanging in there pretty good. I love how you work, very clever and genius ways. I'm gonna to follow your ideas on my jeep, especially the rustproof and bedliner paint. You're an artist Mike! Really enjoyed your RU-vid videos. Thanks for sharing 👍

Hi Mike ,my name Is Louis from Johannesburg ,South Africa ,I've been following your channel for the a while. Great material ,thanks! I have a XJ Cherokee 2.5 diesel ,my favourite is the 2.5 turbo diesel I have been experiencing a no start situation. I was told it is most likelly injector 1 which houses a electric coil.This was determined after a lot of long hours of fault chasing and consulting of jeep forums Do you know what the cause could be and how to fix this or get hold of a replacement injector perhaps? Thanks Louis
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 2 года назад
Hey louis, thanks for watching! The injector one shouldn't cause a no start. If it's faulty it sets the engine into limp mode which limits fuel at about 2000rpm and above stopping the turbo spooling. Injector one is really easy to test also. Just unplug it from the wiring harness at the back of the firewall and put a multimeter on the two contracts of the injector. Use ohms to check it and make sure it reads between 80 and 100 ohms. If it fluctuates or reads much higher or lower its busted. A no start might be caused by a bad crank position sensor. Does the engine just turn over and not fire?
@louismatthysen3181
@louismatthysen3181 2 года назад
@@WorkshoptoWilderness Hi Mike ,thank you for your quick response, i measured the two contact on the plug ,no reading on ohms setting ,stays zero I did replace the crank position sensor previously tginking that ot could be the cause ,but still no start ,the bosch injector pump was serviced ,the bosch service centre said there's nothing wrong with the pump ,the fuel shut-off valve is working also ,they got me to check fuel supply to the filter and the filter to the pump ,all looks fine I don't know what else could be wrong ,i checked every relay and fuse ,all checks out fine I really don't want to give up ,it's such anice vehicle to drive..

That’s tight and inventive, as always. Ok you have a 2 1/2 year old, a job (it seems) in a garage, a wife and a channel. And I assume you eat and bathe. My question is, do you sleep? Where the flip do you find the time to do all this? I have a 2 1/2 year old as well and I’ve accomplished f@ck-all in that time.
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 2 года назад
Haha I do shower (sometimes) and eat but sleep sadly isn't something either of us get enough off. Megan I and both work and our son started daycare. I'm self employed though and I made some time on Thursday and Fridays each week over the winter to try and get the jeep done. So that's basically how I found the time. Most of the time there days it's literally impossible to find time to work for long enough on the jeep to achieve anything.

Hey Mike - Just got back from 10 days on the road with the XJ using a big honkin coleman gas grill setup along with my backpacking optimus/gsi pot setup for cooking/coffee. Heavily looking into the muurikka solution so we can get this price inflation started! Anything you would change or like to test from your current setup? Seems you have perhaps gotten through the honeymoon period. Happy to test some stuff out. Two things I noticed that maybe you could confirm or squash are.. 1. Trekking poles look like they could be more stable, is that instability due to their flexibility or your worksmanship ;). 2. Do you think the whisperlite is heating enough square footage on the muurikkah to justify the size of the pan?. Wondering basically if I should find stiffer legs and a larger burner or anything else you have run into. Thanks for the help!
